new here. meds or hiv itself?
« on: January 05, 2008, 10:29:42 AM »
hi all i am new here so please forgive me if i am posting this in the wrong place, anyway here goes. i am a 27 yr old positive female, know of being positive for 4/5 years. have been on meds for 2 yrs sustiva & truvada. when i started meds my cd4 was 240 & vl was well very high cant remember! within a couple of months my vl went to undectectable & my cd4 had risen to 500, then went on to go up to 700 & the last lots of 3 months results were 400. doctor says all is good tho no need 2 worry as the precentage is 40 whatever that means i have no idea! my worry is the last 6 months i guess maybe a little less i have noticed i am losing weight in the top of my legs, bum. def can feel my trousers are a little looser, i havnt actually lost any weight overall tho still weigh 9 stone i am 5 ft 4" by the way. i may have lost a bit in my face not much tho but i think i can notice it. this really bothers me as before meds i lost quiet a bit of weight & was looking quite rough & after meds managed to gain all my weight again which was fab, now i am becoming very depressed about the thought of maybe losing weight again. does anyone know if the meds i am on could be doing this or is it hiv itself? thanks so much uk lady

In my opinion, your weight/volume changes are not related directly to hiv.  They may be related to your meds, but not much.  Both of the meds you are on have low weight distribution side-effects.

I wish I could be of more help but it may just be stress, normal changes that occur with time, or another medication (antidepressants, maybe?).

I've been on Truvada (NRTI) and two protease inhibitors for two years.  PIs have been known to change body fat/muscle, etc., but so far the only thing I've seen is slight weight gain and a pot-belly right in front, and even that is not huge.

Check it out and talk with your doctor.  I also exercise 5 days a week at least, and that has stabilized my body although I still have the belly fat right below my naval.  I can live with it.  Check with your health care givers and see if what you are experiencing is normal, or what you can do about it.

Don't be alarmed.

Good luck!

Hi lady

Welcome to the forums.

I started having the same problems when I was on Trizivir a few years back, now I'm on Norvir, Reyataz, Tenofovir and Emtriva (we don't have Truvada here in NZ)..but nothing has changed, I'm still looking a bit thin in the limbs.. ;)

I have weight loss in my arms and legs and a little in the face..I think these side ffects come with most of the NRTI's..although everyone is different, so to answer your question, if anything, I think the meds would be to blame and not the HIV itself.

If this is really worrying you maybe you should talk to your Doctor, try not to stress too much this will only add to your problems..yes I know, it's easy for me to say..but stressing out won't help.

Hope you stay around and hope to hear more from you.

Hugs
Jan

Where is Newt when we need him?

When I was on Truvada/Lexiva, I got very skinny in my legs and arms and my belly looked like I was pregnant.  And, you mentioned your butt (bum); yes, it widdled away.  So, I'm with Jan, it's the meds.  I'm not sure what meds would be good for you to change to.  Talk with your doctor about it.

Hey, why don't you join us in the women's forum?  Hope to hear more from you!
Peace-
Betty

Yes dear, I am on different medication now because of resistance issues.  Right now I'm on Trizivir/Sustiva.  I still have some weight issues, but not what they used to be.  Yes, if you look to the left of your screen, underneath where your avatar under "Content" there is something that says "Positive Women."  We have an ongoing "hen" meeting in there (all us women). (The dating threads).   It's very informative and it's good when talking about women's issues that we don't want to discuss in the other parts of the forums.  We would love for you to join us!  Hey, don't worry about being new.  I didn't know anything when I first started.

Milady,

There is a very usefull lesson on hiv and pregnancy right here on this site, including preferred treatment options during pregnancy:

http://www.aidsmeds.com/articles/Pregnancy_4907.shtml

I suggest that you read the lesson first, than discuss of possible options with your hiv specialist.

Hi Lady and welcome.

As others have said reading the information on this site, accessed through the links at the top left of the page, especially the 'lessons' and 'drugs' links should be helpful to you and arm you with the right info to discus the matter knowledgeably with your Doctor.

Another place that I've found helpful, and sometimes more relevant to U.K. practices can be found here.

http://www.aidsmap.com/

You can also get useful info first hand over the telephone from the Terence Higgins Trust or perhaps a local HIV support group.

John.
