Too much information
« on: January 01, 2008, 01:18:02 PM »
Yesterday I was looking at a member's profile on the forums. Within minutes, I received a PM from another member saying that he noticed that I was looking at the profile of "so-and-so."

The PM wasn't threatening or abusive in any way, but it made me uncomfortable to learn that someone was actually able to know that I was looking at someone else's profile.

My question is, why is this kind of information available? Why does anyone need to know what forums I am visiting or what profiles I am viewing? The profiles also contain "statistics" with a bar graph showing the hourly pattern of login times for each member. Why would anyone need to know this?

I don't mind my name showing up in the list of users currently online. I do mind having others being able to track my movements once I am in the forums. Prior to that PM yesterday, it never occurred to me that anyone would have the slightest interest in my forum activity.

Is always been like that Allan. It's not like this is a porn site and people can see your interests.

I use that function frequently--I'm not sure why.

I'm not snoopy by nature at all, but it's there, and sometimes I can see at a glance where the action is, or who's composing a post to a thread (and I'll stick around a little longer if I'm interested in hearing what they have to say), or sometimes when I'm not hearing back from someone via PM, I can tell by the "user's online" if they're parked at a forum menu (and likely away from their computer, or out for a cig, or whatever...), and then I won't wait around.

Sometimes I'm just bored, and I just go take a look.

All that said, it wouldn't bother me in the least if the function were disabled (as it is at the two other boards I visit frequently).

Oh, I just L U V  that little ol' function.  I get great ideas of threads to check out that I may have never seen from browsing it.  Plus, it tips you off when something juicy may be afoot on here.  If you see all the mods swooped in on a particular thread, something interesting is happening.

It's also a delightful little way see when someone might be reading a reply you've made or to know if it's worth it to stay online for a few minutes more if you are waiting for a PM back from somebody or something like that.

I am always the last one to know of these things. Not that I would be stalking anyone on the forums anyway...

PS:  I sincerely hope we aren't going to end up losing YET another freedom on this forum because of a little needless hand wringing.  For heaven's sake...we're all on here to discuss teh AIDS that the majority of posters here got from teh buttsex and / or sharing needles.  We openly discuss all sorts of itches, twitches, blotches & spots...and everything else right down to the color and texture of our bowel movements.

So people can see what thread you're checking out.  Big deal.

I'm with Queen on this one.  I had no idea this function existed.  And, now that I do, would someone please explain in fine detail how I, too, can become a AM forum-stalker?

I have never done any "stalking" on here.   I never see who's pm'ing who, or who's looking at whose profile.  I do, sometimes, see who's on what thread.

queen you can have thomas dolby if i can have rockwell - he looked HOT in that vid, esp. the shower scene... mmmmmm...

allan, if you dont want people to know what you are looking at you could only log in when you want to post/pm, and other than that just read things while logged out, then no-one will know what thread you are looking at. i have mixed feelings about the function (to be honest i feel a bit paranoid about being seen to be online at all any more) but i dont think i would want to see it disabled. v disturbed about the info contained in the privacy international site - but not surprised >:(
