Just by coincidence, I have been doing some reading about sex between men in the 19th century.  Seems there is ample evidence because New York City kept meticulous records of arrests for (male) prostitution, raids on bars and descriptions include cross dressing men.

Can't help wondering if the self-righteous sailor who instigated the scandal ever got with his repressed sexuality. Just sayin'....  In my experience those who rant and carry on the loudest about perverts are -- well, you know where I'm going with this.

Cheers,

The operators seduced sailors in Newport and participated in numerous sex acts with them — mostly by accepting oral sex to completion. They recorded their encounters in daily reports.

So, if the young sailors didn't complete the act were they let off with a slap on the wrist or were they forced to complete the act...a "Well now that you are here and seeing as you have started you might as well finsh" kind of thing...interesting.

Defintion of Zeal..great enthusiasm, eagerness.

Sounds to me that this wasn't just done for their country..me thinks it was a job they enjoyed..and not just to score brownie points with the top brass.

But what do I know.. :D
