Scared!
« on: December 04, 2007, 10:24:42 AM »
Hi.
I am wondering if I should be worried about an HIV test.

About a year ago I tested negative using the oral HIV test(Scrapped the inside of my mouth) and checked for STDS they all came back negative.

I recently had a blood test for HIV -  I get the  results Saturday. I am wondering what are the chances of the blood test coming back positive. I have not had sex in over a year - not a cancer patient or IV drug user.

What was your risk?
How long after your possible exposure was it that you tested?

Hi.

My risk - Vaginal sex. Just once - he pulled out.

I tested close to 4 months after the encounter.

I am so frightened and alone.

When the nurse called to tell me that my STD panel came back negative & that I would have to come in for my HIV results - she said so far so good.
What the hell...I had an appt. this morning for a pap & breast exam and to pick up my results. I am so afraid they are going to tell me I am positive that I cancelled and they rescheduled for Saturday - Again I am afraid that they reschedule so quickly because I am HIV positive.

All I can advise you is to do is pick up your results. You had a risk, but you will never know your status unless you pick up your test results.

Is it possible that the first test was a false negative - I guess what  I want to ask is how accurate is the oral test for HIV

Very accurate. They are FDA approved medical devices.

freak,

You're worrying for no good reason. You tested a year ago, well outside the window period after a risk. You tested conclusively hiv negative and as you have not had sex since then, you did not need to re-test.

Your result will not be any different this year. You ARE hiv negative!

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex with a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through all three condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

You ARE hiv negative. Count on it. Now go pick up those results and quit worrying!

I'm sure you are. There's no reason to be however as Ann observes, your results will be negative.
