Gas and diarrhea -- Want a normal digestive system
« on: November 05, 2007, 01:55:45 PM »
So my fellow brothers and sisters. My digestive system, your digestive system. Mine is driving me  crazy. First of all, I am a very lucky man. This past September was my 24th year of hiv. Started going to the doctor in September 1983  because I was always feeling tired.

Now my digestive  system is bothering me. Now I take a Lactaid pill before I eat and sometimes take a gas and diarrhea pill after. There are times when I think I haven't injested any dairy and yet I get gassy and my underwear is always a mess. Sorry to gross you out because I'm grossed out too.

Should I say goodbye to coffee? My bf grew up on a coffee farm in Brasil, so he drinks alot of very strong coffee and it's usually the first thing in my stomach in the a.m. Also is it time to cut  down on sugar. God, I need that instant gratification!

Suggestions? Ideas?

Thanks so much,
Me :)

Well, indeed coffee does not help with digestive issues.  I, too, have a lot of digestive issues and I've found taking Pancrecarb helps a lot with gas and bloating.

http://digestivecare.com/pancrecarb3.htm

I see you live in NYC (Lower East Side!  I used to live there too in the early 90's) and Pancrecarb is on your ADAP formulary (as "pancrelipase") so if you use that it's covered.  I combine it daily with loperamide/imodium and it greatly helps, and I'm able to continue with my coffee habit :)  Pancrecarb, as opposed to imodium, attacks the cause and not the symptom.  I've been taking it regularly now for two years.  If you decide to try it I'll just add that you'll need to play around with the dosing for the first few months depending on the severity of your GI issues.

I see you're on Truvada (I am too) and that can cause quite a bit of gas.  I definitely fart less and have reduced the bloating with Pancrecarb.

I suffered with really bad diarrhea in 2002.  I started taking opium tincture and it did the trick, it was just a nightmare to take.  I recently got a new G.I. doctor and she had me take 4 imodium caplets a.m. and 4 at night.  I haven't had the tincture in about 3 weeks.  I feel better than ever.  Who knew.  Imodium 8 x a day.

Thanks for the info. I'll give it a whirl. That's a lot  of imodium, maybe I should buy stock in that company?!

I have the same issues my friend, but I going to talk to my doctor about switching from Truvada & Kaletra (4 pills of the Special K) to Atripla.

I may never beat HIV, but then again, it will NEVER beat me!

well im still kinda new to this stuff..ive been on Kaletra and truveda..(yeah its the ex-lax of all HIV meds)..the only thing i found that works is taking Immodium..but take the big pill for gass bloating and diarrhea..And take one every night before going to bed..avoid caffine..especially coffee because it causes runs..learn to switch to green tea in the mornings with sweet and low..I usualy start my morning with that and then afterwards eat some dried cornflakes..that usually does the trick for me all day..that and avoiding wet foods as well as anything fatty..its also good cuz with kaletra it raises the cholesterol.
