Freaking a Bit-Rectal Bleeding
« on: October 02, 2007, 11:54:43 PM »
I mentioned in another thread that i thought the Viagra I used a couple weeks ago may have caused rectal bleeding.  I noticed some bright red blood on the paper after a BM.  I thought that had subsided, but today there seems to be blood in my stool and I'm starting to freak out.

I had a sigmoidoscopy done before summer, which didn't catch much other than possible "solitary rectal ulcer syndrome".  At the time my GP sounded a bit surprised the GI doc hadn't done a full colonoscopy.  Anyway, so here I am late at night getting worried :(

Hey Guy,

I guess I missed the thread about the Viagra and rectal bleeding. That is a new one on me.

But, that is beside the point. Right now, I would probably be thinking I need to see the doc to find out what is going on. Until you can see the doc, try not to get too worked up.

I know, easier said than done, but worrying doesn't make things any easier.

HUGS,

Mark

Thanks Mark.  I know it best not to worry, and I have an appt with my doc on Thursday.  What make sit tough is this: my dad died from non-hodgkins lymphoma.  What preceded his final trip to the hospital was severe rectal hemorrhaging from a blood vessel which I guess had been weakened by tumours.  He never came out of the hospital after that.  It preys on my mind and has given me a terror of that kind of bleeding.

I think that is perfectly understandable, considering your father's medical history.

I feel much the same way about heart attacks. My dad had three, with the last one killing him at 66. His first was when he was in his early 50s.

I am now 50.

So, yeah, I really do understand your feelings.

Just know that I will be thinking of you and sending positive energy your way.

Let me know how things go on Thursday.

HUGS,

Mark

I have always kinda had the problem of anal fissures that develop when you dont get enough fiber in your diet. This can cause blood on your poop and on the toilet papers afterwards. Ask about that! But pray you never get one right on edge of you anus....that hurts like hell!

Well saw my doc, he seems a bit annoyed that the GI doc just did a sigmoidoscopy instead of a full-on colonoscopy.  That way bleeding in the upper intestinal tract could have been ruled out right away.  It seems to be tapering off now, so maybe it was just a roid or small fissure. We'll monitor it.  Next appt I get a referral to the HIV Centre for Excellence for a high-resolution anoscopy, since I've had anal warts and an abnormal PAP.  Oh goody :-\

I'm confused about Viagra causing rectal bleeding--usually that's a problem for my partner if I take it :o

link to that thread please?

OK, I'm feeling really stupid .

Yesterday there was virtually nothing in the house for dinner, so I snacked on the one bag of chips left in the cupboard, a bag of Terra Chips "Sweets & Beets" made from sweet potatoes and beets.  To my consternation this morning's BM had the same frightening reddish hue as the incident which led to me first posting this.  So it wasn't rectal bleeding at all, it was the DAMN BEET CHIPS!

Thank God I didn't phone the GI doc and insist on a full colonoscopy.  I feel like an idiot :-[  Damn HIV makes me so paranoid about everything.

Northo,

Same thing happened to my dad years back. He pigged out on oven roasted beetroots one night (the man is like a plague of locusts) and the next morning crapped the most brilliant hue of red.

For about three hours we freaked, thinking the stupid old bastard had the bowel cancer. Until we remembered his previous night's repast.

Oh how we laughed. :D

I peed bright red after eating too many pickled beets.  I didn't know about the connection and went running to my doctor.

Sounds to me like they should slap a warning label on beets.  I smell a lawsuit ;)

I am the same too. I guess my inside is too, er, tender? But as we get older it makes sense to have that tunnel regularly checked..

Glad to hear things are fine now North.. ;)
