Hello I stopped worrying but now I have begun again
« on: November 03, 2007, 09:30:24 PM »
about 4 months ago I had sex for the first time, unprotected vaginal drunken sex with a woman

she said she got tested every couple months but you cant believe people these days

7 weeks after i got a negative test for hiv from my doctor.

I have been feeling my lymph nodes for a week and I think one is swollen. My doctor 6 weeks ago said I dont have thrush but now my throat hurts when i wake up. i also can not go up stair without losing breath.

Very worried, what are my chances?

The chances of you having been infected from this encounter are very slim. HIV is a fragile virus which is difficult to transmit, particularly from female to male. Since most people who do test positive will have done so by the 6 week mark, your 7 week negative result points to an excellent outcome at week 13.

But low risk is not the same as no risk and you do need to test again at week 13 to get a conclusive negative result.

Please take the time to read our Welcome Thread and follow the links to our Lessons to learn more about how HIV is and is not transmitted.

Actually I need to add something here.

Your sexual encounter was 4 months ago. You can test again right away to receive your almost certain conclusively negative result.

I remember reading that most hiv transmissions come from just one act of  unprotected sexual intercourse

thats what mainly has me worried

In a sense every sexually acquired HIV transmission comes from just one act of sexual intercourse, but it's more complex than that.

In fact statements like "most hiv transmissions come from just one act of  unprotected sexual intercourse" are supremely fucking stupid. Avoid websites and people who say crap like that.

The likelihood of the woman you slept with having HIV is not great. Even if she is positive the likelihood that you contracted the virus from that one single encounter is not great. Many people have had unprotected anal and/or vaginal sex with an HIV positive person and not been infected.

Let's add to that your 7 week negative result and as I said it's almost certain you've dodged the bullet.

But don't take Matty the Damned's word for it, kid - find out for yourself. Go and get an HIV antibody test done as soon as your nearest clinic/doctor's surgery opens. You don't need to delay any longer.

My bet is you're gonna test negative.

But learn from this experience. Getting a skin full of booze and then going fucking like a thing possessed without using protection is a really dumb thing to do. Rather than worrying about HIV, you should be more concerned about STDs like gonorrhoea and chlamydia. Those conditions are much more prevalent and transmissible than HIV. You should arrange to have a full STD screen performed if you haven't already.

Be well,

MtD

thanks matt for all your help, and I learned my lesson. thankfull i got tested for all stds 2 months ago and didnt contract one, now I just hope hiv comes back negative.

I have had my doubts recently mostly due to the fact that I have lost 10 pounds in 2 months. Should I take anything from the wieght loss? or could it not be related to hiv

thanks
