Help. My mouse is going crazy....
« on: July 04, 2007, 10:47:33 PM »
I would really appreciate some help from all you computer wizards out there. For some strange reason my mouse on my laptop seems to have a mind of it's own. For example, while typing, it will jump to another part of something I may be typing. Or all of a sudden it will wipe out everything I have typed...Is there any way I can correct this?

could be something simple like a piece of lint or dust in your mouse. give it a good blow.

Try opening the mouse up. Take the ball inside out. (If you have the same kind that I do). Take a q tip with a little alcohol on it. Look for the little thingie in there that turns. If you look at it there might be an accumulation of dust from your pad. Wet it with q tip. Then I very carefully and gently take tweezers and work the accumulated gunk off of it. Mouse always recovers and you'd be amazed at how much junk
accumulates in there.

You know, just like relationships. LOL

Hope that helps, Queen.

She said that it's a laptop, so I'm assuming it's the built in mouse not one attached via USB, etc.

I'd play around with my mouse tracking preferences first as I'm not convinced it's an issue of cleanliness.  Do you know how to find where to do that -- if not hopefully someone else can chip in as I'm on a Mac and it's been 6 years since I used a PC.  I think there's something in the lower left corner that opens up all of that stuff, isn't there?

Otherwise I'd guess it's a problem with the ole innards and you're going to have to take it somewhere.  I assume it's out of warranty?

On my laptop there is an icon in the lower right corner for the Synaptics Pointing Device. Double click on that icon and it will bring up your Mouse properties. Someone else will have to chime in on what to do next.

Queen,

Click your "start button" (lower left) then click "settings" then click "Control Panel" .  Look for the mouse icon. Left double click on that icon.

A properties box will appear ( with 5 tabs across the top)

They will be labeled as  : BUTTONS, POINTERS, POINTER OPTION, WHEEL AND HARDWARE

Click on "Pointer" :

Make sure that "Normal select is highlighted.

Now click on  "pointer option"

UNCHECK- the checkmark in enhanced pointer precision box--( if there is a checkmark there)  Also uncheck "hide pointer when typing.

Click   "OK" and reboot your computer. See if that solves the problem. If not. start over again and open up your "Mouse properties"  If you have a tab ( on the far right titled )   "HARDWARE"  , click on that and then click the troubleshoot button. Follow the prompts.

Viruses can also effect the mouse and curser. Hopefully you don't have a virus !

I am also not sure what operating system you have

Good luck-----Ray

Hmmm, well it is out of warranty. I don't see anything in the lower corner that has to do with a mouse. My laptop is an hp pavillion. The only way I know who to get to anything that has to do with the mouse is thru the control panel but when I open that up, I get more confused...Just had to get another XP disk, I thought it was doing it at first because I was using someone else's disk for 30 days. But this damn mouse jump into a whole nother sentence or will wipe out a paragraph/word at will. Something definitely isn't right. I appreciate all the responses I have gotten but we gotta brainstorm, I know I am not the first person this happened to...

Damn it, JRE, I just saw your post as I was finishing mine. I have written that first sentences 3 times already cause it just wipes stuff out at will. That is usually how I get to the mouse but I will check the other things you mentioned and post back...

modified to respond to JRE's suggestions...I unchecked those 2 boxes and is about to reboot. I hope that works but has had viruses in the past. I use Avast, so I'm not sure if it is catching all of them...Ok here goes nuthing....

sorry Queen,
When you said it was a mouse problem, I thought you meant what I understand to be a mouse attached to your laptop. Sounds like you have a scroller/touchpad problem, as others have suggested - didn't realise folk also refer to them as a mouse.
Good luck.

We're waiting for ya !! you should have been back online again. The only thing I can suggest, is that there is most likely a problem with the mouse "driver" or you may have a virus. I will be back online in a minute, and see how things are going for you.

Queen,

Another suggestion. Update your Avast anti virus program. Make sure it has the latest definitions, and do a complete system scan.

OK, to answer everyone's post....

JRE---Sorry, I got side tracked but did do what you suggested, didn't work. I usually run a complete scan when I use Avast. I just put it back on my laptop because I just reinstalled XP on Tuesday. Hasn't done a scan yet but it has been updating itself. If it is the mouse driver then what?

Fearless-- Sorry hun, I call em all mouses or should I say mice?

JeffinNYC--- I have used the air cans before for my ps2 but there is no where to spray the air on my laptop except for where the keys are....But no where on the touchpad/scroller as fearless tells me it is called...

Philly-- I wish I could give you closure, you'll get it when I get it...Now back in line and give me more feedback.

Milker-- I have never bought a mouse for my laptop but sees it in my near future if no one can help me...

Ok, First of all make sure all your windows updates are reinstalled and current.

If you can rule out any viruses, that are messing with the mouse, and rule out any defect within the keyboard or mouse pad, the next step would be to make sure the driver is not corrupted.

( you may want to get some help on this)  If you are uncomfortable doing this.

First : Click start button, click "settings",  Click control panel, locate the icon labled  "SYSTEM",   and left click twice on that.

This will bring up a window with about 7 tabs across the top. Click on the tab labled " HARDWARE", now click on the button ( a little below that),  labled "DEVICE MANAGER" ( this will bring up a new window) you will see quite a few items listed. Most of them will have a plus symbol ( +) in front of the description of the device.

Go down the line one by one and look for something that says"MICE AND OTHER POINTING DEVICES" and click the + sign on the left of "mice and other pointing devices".

It will then expand and possibly show PS/ 2 mouse. Right click on PS/2 mouse.

You will see some options listed :

  Update Driver

  uninstall

  Scan for hardward changes

  Properties

Click on "Update Driver" and follow the prompts. Hopefully this will update the driver, if there is a possibility something is wrong with it.

The other option ( if the above doesn't work) is to click "uninstall" This will remove the driver. At this point, you will need to reboot the computer, windows will automatically search for that missing driver and reinstall it. Follow any prompts, at that point. If you have an installation disc, it may ask you to put the disc in. Once again, this can be a little tricky, so if your uncomfortable doing these procedures , get someone with a little more knowledge to help you out.

Queen , I can't promise anything. It's difficult for me, to really get into this, without seeing the problem that your having, actually occurring.

There is also a way to disable the mouse pad on laptop computer ( I believe it is one of the "F KEYS" )

Another option by a cheapy USB mouse, and plug it in. Some new mice come with the installation driver disc. And you would have to run that. Sometimes you can plug in the new mouse, and it will work right away.

Once again, if your uncomfortable doing any of this, get someone to help you. I don't want to see you mess anything up badly, or make things worse. !!!

If anyone can add something that I may have missed, or some additional info, please do !!

Good luck---Ray

JRE--- I'm pretty comfy doing what you asked, I'm going to try your suggestion right after this post. I prefer to work on my own puter even though I have a friend who does the more techinical stuff for me. But I can handle what you are telling me to do and if I mess it up, I'd rather it be me than someone else.

JDP3---- That sounds nasty but thanks for the suggestion...

Aight now, JRE...I had to end up uninstalling the driver and I rebooted. It did not ask me for a disk or anything. I usually have my computer automatically install new updates so I think I am current. I will continue to make posts and see if the mouse jumps around. As of this post, it seems to be ok...Will keep you posted...

I think you need to show it to someone, like at Best Buy, so they can tell you if it's a driver problem, a touchpad hardware problem, and use an external mouse to see if it does the same thing.

Update...I think my mouse nightmares are over. It was the sensitivity thingy, it was set high and had to be lowered. Now how come none of you computer geniuses knew this? I was goofing around on the net and decided to see what I could find on the hp site. I also updated a few of my other drivers. So, if you see me posting on a lot of threads, it is because I am testing the mouse or touch pad out. So far so good, not one skip or deleted post. Never thought I would be the one to figure out my own problem.... ;D

Uh, I suggested it in my 2nd post on the thread, and others elaborated on it.

The Dark Lord of Computer Mishaps often uses the simplest of issues to confound the wisest computer technician. He works in mysterious ways, he does.

Glad to hear that it's been taken care of.
"Love is always patient and kind. It is never jealous. Love is never boastful nor conceited. It is never rude or selfish. It does not take offense and is not resentful. Love takes no pleasure in other people's sins, but delights in the truth. Hmm and I missed this...I am scrolling back for this one...I don't remember you saying anything about the sensitivity thingy....I must have been in one of my famous hazes....

modified to say: I stand corrected Philly. Indeed you did mention that.

Ok, maybe someone can explain this one to me. I now have wireless internet, when the TW technician came over, we got to jawing about some of the issues about my laptop. He suggested I reformat which I did but ever since then the mouse has started acting flaky again. Of course, I found this thread and did what I did the last time but it still does not seem to be working. What can I do now?

Also, for the sake of starting another thread, the tech also said I had too many processes running in my task manager. Before reformatting I had 32 running, some of them repeats but was told never to end any process that has the word SYSTEM next to it. After reformatting I have 25 processes running which I know should not be happening. I know someone is saying call Geek Squad but I don't have Geek Squad money, any help would be appreciated...
