Australians: Enrol to Vote
« on: October 14, 2007, 05:48:49 PM »
Fellow Countrymen and that fella from Tasmania,

As you would know (unless you live in a humpy out back of Brewarrina) the Prime Minister yesterday visited H.E. the Governor-General to have the Parliament dissolved. The general election will be held on 24th November.

You may not know that the requirements for enrolling to vote have been tightened up. The electoral rolls will close at 8 PM Wednesday 17th October. That's this Wednesday.

If you're not enrolled or unsure then visit the website of the Australian Electoral Commission where you can determine your enrolment status and obtain further information.

Remember that it is compulsory for all Australian citizens to enrol to vote and to vote.

Enrolled and ready to vote, captain.

Finally, the citizens of Aus will get the chance to have their say on little Johnnie and his policies.

Despite the fact that the opposition is 12 points ahead in the opinion polls, I suspect this one may come down to the wire. Howard is a wily old bugger and will use every trick in the book to get across the line.

Fingers crossed.

Be forgiving, be grateful, be optimistic

If I still lived in Australia I would write in Malcom Fraser for PM. Anyone caught without their pants on in the lobby of a sleazy hotel in Memphis can't be all bad.

At least it would give us a brighter choice

Ah Scuddles, Matty the Damned is strictly a machine operator within the ALP. He shuns the lure of public office in favour of supporting the candidacy of more electable types.

Real power rests not with those in Parliament, but those who decide who gets into Parliament.

Wickedly,

I heard something on the news today about "Sorry" Day and how this guy finally decided to be sorry about the Aborginies.  It's taken him like 10 years to come around but I guess he just can't say he's sorry.  He wants to pass a resolution or something?

And what this "Sorry DAy"?  Is that for real?

Yairs, Mr Howard has lately discovered that it might be time to lose the "tough on blacks" attitude. Too late, methinks.

And yes there is a Sorry Day. It is held despite the views of the Prime Minister.

Robert,

Our PM has been steadfast in his refusal to accept any responsibility for the treatment of and plight of Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Sorry Day came about in 1998 as a recommendation from a government report titled, Bringing them Home, which dealt with the forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families that occured in Aus until the late 60's or even possibly as late as the early 70's (I'm not 100% sure). They are referred to as the Stolen Generation, forcibly removed from their families and culture to be educated just like us whities. Truth is they were instutionalized and systematically abused. http://www.acn.net.au/articles/sorry/.

Low and behold, we have an election coming up, the PM is 12 points behind in the polls, and all of a sudden he wants to hold a referendum to amend the Constitution (the Preamble actually) to formally recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders - "their history as the first inhabitants of our country, their unique heritage of culture and languages, and their special (though not separate) place within a reconciled, indivisible nation".
Be forgiving, be grateful, be optimistic
