A NEW POZQUEERS COMMUNITY FOR GAY/BI/HIV MEN
« on: October 11, 2007, 01:48:26 PM »
I have setup a brand new community for POZ MEN on the Internet. This is not a for profit site. I run it myself and there will never be any charge to anyone within the new POZQUEERS COMMUNITY I have opened.

I myself am HIV+ and over the years have become frustrated with those "free" HIV dating sites that in reality allow you to look and not use whatever additional features they may, or may not have. It blows me away that people out there think we have money to spend for that crap! The only, and still the BEST personals site, is of course the one that is truly free at poz.com. There are of course restrictions as to what you can post because they are inclusive of everyone, which I certainly understand. No het woman or man wants to go on a site and hear us talk about our intimate lives or see our plumbing- and vice versa! Nor do a lot of us want to see all that plumbing in our faces when all we are looking for are new net buddies & friends. That is why POZQUEERS is for gay/BI/queer men only.  It is setup to keep the horny porn out of your face in the public areas and for those of us who do want to display ourselves there is an area that can only be accessed by members within the community - its off limits to the public!

I also became a bit frustration at Yahoo because they are continuing to cleanse and sanitize their groups - I also understand that. There are far too many unmoderated groups in yahoo and the ones that are moderated; sometimes it can take days to see your messages posted. For those who want support they can always go to thebody.com or poz.com and find that support.

POZQUEERS is a fully featured online Internet experience that features blogging, groups, IM chat, privacy settings, skins, homepages that you can customize, searches in profiles and my favorites by clicking on key words that link you to others with like or similar interests.

The community is ad supported like Yahoo & Google Groups but the few ads there are always at the bottom or the top of the pages.  There are none of them flashing banner ads either. There is no spamming, no racism and you receive "alerts" to your registered email address. Once you join you have the option of keeping your email address private (recommended) and then you can go into settings to edit your "alert" preferences.

This new community is starting to build itself and will continue to grow as I continue to let others like myself know that POZQUEERS is there.

I moderate the community myself and by the end of the year the community will not be piggy backed on the me.com communities. POZQUEERS is a private community and is not listed on the me.com network, which is partnered with Google. It does require an ACCESS code to join. Again I want to emphasize that this is free with none of those hidden terms about gaining for access.

Please visit my website www.pozqueers.com for more information about what I have started. I also am asking the moderator of poz.com  forums to allow this post on the bulletin board and to contact me personally or even join the community and check it out!
Sincerely
Jim Thurman

I am asking them to allow the post!  The BB is constantly moderated and if the moderator reads the post, as they usually do, and they wish to verify that this is not a commercial venture (it is NOT)......then they won't delete it.

This is supposed to be a bulletin board for putting up information out there.  I'm not sure what your ppoint is.  Have I done something wrong here?

Jim -- Peter Staley here, the founder of this site.  You really should have asked first before posting this promotional thread.   Normally this kind of thread would be quickly deleted, but I'm going to let this one slide.  What can I say, I like your face pic -- you seem like someone that I'd want to meet some day.

But Jim...  a couple of things.  Don't go around calling yourself not-for-profit, and then use a dot-com domain name instead of dot-org.  Let's face it, you probably don't have a 501(c)(3) from the IRS, and what you really mean is that you don't plan on ever making any money on this new website.  You're just going to use the small amount from the ads on the site to pay your hosting fees, etc.  I think that's great, but please realize that without a tax-exempt status from the IRS, or a .org domain name, some folks might doubt your claims of being not-for-profit.

Also, because you'll have ads on your site, and because you are offering tools similar to POZ and AIDSmeds, you are technically in competition with us.  But there's nothing wrong with that, I'd just rather you not use our forums as a promotional platform, that's all.  Actually, I like your style -- it sounds like you launched this site to offer folks something other sites aren't offering -- it's called a niche business model, and it's the same model I used for AIDSmeds.  Back in 2000, TheBody and AEGIS were practically the only games in town, and I decided to offer a better niche of what they offered.  They attempted to cover all kinds of HIV/AIDS info, including prevention, legal issues, and on and on (almost all of it 3rd party info froms ASOs, etc.).  I thought their treatment info was haphazard, so I launched a website dedicated to the treatment niche.  So I get where you're coming from, and have a certain level of respect for it -- you're offering a gay-only-so-go-ahead-and-post-your-penis-pics HIV+ personals site, or something like that.

So Jim, I'm not going to delete this thread, but I'm going to lock it, so that it becomes a little harder to find in about a day or two.  Please don't post additional promotional threads about your sites without asking us first, okay?  We have the same rules for even large, well-known AIDS service organisations.

Thanks, Jim.  Feel free to PM me sometime.

Peter Staley
