By way of introduction
« on: October 08, 2007, 04:32:04 AM »
I’ve been thoroughly slapped (and most enjoyable it was too) for not introducing myself properly .. so who is this abrasive old gimmer?

Well I live in London (which is where I plan to die), was born in Denmark, have three nationalities (but consider myself to be a European above all else), speak five languages fluently and know how to pull and order a beer in a dozen others, have lived in eight countries, have travelled far and wide, am obsessed with all things nautical and speak English (my fourth language) with a Yorkshire accent .. which is somewhat curious, when you consider that I only lived there very briefly in my twenties.

I used to be a naval officer (Merchant, then Royal and then Merchant again); but I now run my own successful software consultancy (because it allows me to boss people around and fleece big corporations) .. however, I am getting somewhat bored with all of that and plan to retire to a comfortable life of restrained luxury and pleasing pursuits by the time I am fifty.

It is fair to say that I have been a bit of a hedonistic party animal in my time (not because I enjoyed it – it was just a good way of blocking out a violently abusive relationship with a drug addict) .. this was followed by the inevitable crash and deep clinical depression. Antidepressants made things worse, so I clawed my way back out the hard way, learnt the art of positive thinking and vowed never again to dance with the annihilating darkness of depression.

I have pretty much kept that promise. Nothing ever really gets the better of me these days – even my HIV diagnosis, although totally unexpected, was a bit of a non-event – and I now spend a significant proportion of my life detoxing heroin addicts and working with one of the major HIV charities (counselling ‘working boys’ and other marginalized groups living with HIV).

Generally far too chilled for my own good; but, when annoyance does occasionally get the better of me, I can be the most infuriating of pedants, impatient, argumentative, have a tendency to be a little very blunt and be inclined to take exception to people saying things like “God bless you” (something to do with me being an atheist and considering religion to be more noxious and addictive than crystal, crack and heroin).

I am also mildly Americosceptic (as in sceptical of government motives, not the people), a confirmed socialist, a fully recovered altar boy, I love Germans, I adore Australia (if it weren’t for Australia there wouldn’t be a single barman in the whole of London) and I am a secular humanist.

Other things I enjoy (some of which will make no sense at all if you don’t know London) are: the South Bank, my bicycle, VW type II camper vans, films, Tate Modern, museums, theatre, gigs / concerts, art, cultural stuff, boats, ships, longitude, spherical trigonometry, storms, random useless trivia, long walks in the rain, nights out … and lazy Sundays at home with a first-class book, good music, the Sunday papers, fine company, superior conversation, a nice roast and a bottle of full-bodied red.

I hate … hmmm ... Brighton in winter.

I am most likely to be greeted by random strangers (who for some strange reason seem to think they know me) as:

“Oh, you’re thingy .. the guy who always used to push wotsisname – the AIDS fella – around in his wheelchair”

.. “wotsisname” was John Alexander ‘Mad-as-F*ck’ Frew – the most adorable little stroppy Scottish git you could ever wish to know - who died in my arms on 5th August 1999, aged just 26, and who will always be fondly remembered.

Howdy Mark,

Welcome to the family.  London eh? Haven't been there in years, but enjoyed it when I was able to visit.

Quite the intro. Glad you're here and I look forward to getting to know you.

HUGS,

Mark

You have so obviously never had the pleasure of witnessing me dragging up as a Goth lesbian dragged up as a man (or maybe that should just be Liza Minelli?) ;)

Thanks for introducing yourself! At least your name is easy to pronounce, not like gabbardjr and such :D

Spherical trigonometry and boats are not my favorite subjects, so I'll stick with Tate modern and storms.
