Sorry for your loss, loner.
I am on disability assistance (not the permanent disability type) and came into some money from oil rights on land sold years ago. In Lousiana one may sell land while retaining 10 years mineral rights.
I had a little saved up as well so I purchase a $5000 used '99 Malibu (Blue Book value). I was told by my social worker, that I am allowed one car. Of course, I wasn't told that up front but after the acqusition was reported. Also, as a one-time payment only it didn't affect my income level to disqualify me from assistance I am enrolled in. I don't know if auto ownership would vary from state to state. Some will be better qualified to answer your question than I. Just relating my particular story hoping it helps in relieving any stress you may be feeling now.

Report it to your social worker within 10 working days, though. It'll show up on any periodic monitoring that is run through their system (via your SS#).
