HIV Doctors????
« on: September 18, 2007, 12:23:56 PM »
Ok, I have been to my clinic a few times and basically I think they suck, I feel like I am just a number to them, They have overlooked a few important medical things, if I call and tell them I am not feeling well, I will explain to them my symptoms and they usually just say that they will write me a perscription. They don't even want to see me first, sometimes thats fine with me since I really don't like Doctors, but come on....don't you think they should at least want to see my first?
My aunt said she was having a hard time sleeping, so next week I am going to call the clinic and tell them I am having a hard time sleeping and see if they will write me a perscription. Anyone else need some meds while I am at it? There's gotta be a black market out there for perscription drugs!
I have been having some problems with off and on red spots in my mouth and my tongue is sore and really sensitive to some types of food. I go see the doc, he said oh you must have some chancre sores, and there is nothing we can do about it. He looked in my mouth and he said"what am I supposed to be looking at?" I had to show him where the spots were!
I made another appoinment a few weeks later because of the mouth issue, different Doc this time, she said I have never seen anything like that!  I am thinking ok, is that good or bad??? She said she wanted to do a throat culture and she would call me when the results were in. A week later nothing, I had to call her to find out they came back normal.
Anyone else have these problems, I have insurance so it's not like they aren't getting paid good money to treat me? Does anyone know how to find private practice HIV doctors?

I have never had a doctor write me a prescription over the phone without seeing me first unless it was for something I needed a refill on. Is this your HIV doc your talking about or just your general practioner?

Haven't checked with them yet, I don't think there are any close to my area, I think Chicago would be the closest...which is fine, thats only a 3 hour drive. I just might ask my clinic if they know of any!

Wow those people dont sound too bright! Right after I was diagnosed I moved to another state and had no clue about anything. You can always do what I did, which was look up infectious disease, and immune system and things like that online and thats how I found my case manager and doctor! Good luck! I hope you find something better for you!

I have, but only for things like bronchitis which all of my HIV doctors have at some point realized I get respiratory infections yearly.  It depends on what your relationship is with the doctor and what kind of patient they find you to be.

As far as the general question of how to find private practice HIV doctors it's always been my experience that word-of-mouth is the best option.

I agree with Philly that word-of-mouth is the best way to find a good hiv doc.  You might give the local health dept. a call to see if there are any hiv support groups in your area which would probably be the best place to start.  Good luck.   I will say that my hiv MD who is also my primary care physician spent an hour and a half my first two visits.  I see her every three months and those visits are about an hour.  Probably the first doc I've ever really had confidence in.  I went through two others before I was referred to her (word-of-mouth).

Finding a perfect doctor is like trying to find anything else that is perfect, impossible.  However, one must find the doctor they are most comfortable with.  My HIV dr is great except for the 3-4 hour waits I incur everytime I go.  We all sit in the waiting room laughing at why we wait so long, the answer is simple once we see him he spends 45 mins - hour with us.  I have had a couple of tests run that I would have to call back for the results. But I tolerate these inconveniences, because I have full faith in his ability.

If you are not happy I definitely encourage you to find another doctor and keep searching until you are satisfied.

Good luck,
Woods

3-4 hour waits are simply NOT acceptable, sweetie.  There is no excuse for such shenanigans.

I do not understand you people who spend an hour with your doctor either.  What the fuck are you doing all of that time?  Doing lines of coke on the examination table?

You are entirely correct about the waiting, however he is one of the best in town. And based on other horror stories I'll stick it out.  Usually get some reading done, or my requirement of Judge Judy.

Well Woods, I guess this brings up another topic but it's kind of related so I don't consider it a hijack.  But if someone thinks I should start another thread just say so.

It's well known on the board that I've lived in, not just large cities, but very large cities ever since being diagnosed.  I'm always in a bit of wonder about how someone deals with HIV when they live in the boondocks.  I would imagine finding a good HIV specialist is a bit of a compromise.  Hell, even the first time I had to find a new one in NYC I freaked out, as I was lucky that when I was diagnosed I was already in the office of an HIV specialist... he just happened to be a gay doctor that someone had recommended to me at a dinner party and when I got a bad case of bronchitis I pulled out his business card and made an appointment... the HIV testing was just an afterthought while in the office and frankly I didn't even lose sleep waiting for the results as I just assumed they would be negative.

ANYWAY (sorry... coffee/caffeine rambling) it's not even just the HIV specialist issue if you live in a rural or semi-rural area... it's all of the OTHER specialists when something goes wrong.  And I guess forget finding a decent shrink.  Dunno... I can only imagine living where there are a LOT of other HIV patients just because of the medical resources.  It's the main reason I did not mind moving to Philadelphia.  There are so many junkies and fags here that all the HIV doctors are kept very busy and cutting edge, which for me is necessary as I need someone that knows everything about HIV drug resistance and access to all the drug trials, etc.

there is a site called  RateMDs.com  start there , you can find out all about any dr. , & add 1 too
it a start !   i was being treeted for thrush (white tongue, white spots) , for 1.5 yrs, went to different dr.
i dont have thrush !!  it was another fungus, turned my tongue black, (cant remember the name), clearing up with oral antiseptic .  also cant remember the name for red spots in the mouth. it is treatable !
do some research before & after a dr. visit.  it's amazing what you can find on the web !
THERE IS A FUNGUS AMONG US !  LOL.
