NEVER FORGET
I can't believe it has been 6 years since that awful day.  I have a brother in the Army, and he has been back and forth to the Middle East more times than I care to admit.  He is fighting for our country.  I am so proud of my brother.  He is home in Savannah right now, but that won't be for long, and back he'll go, in that CH-47, shooting at the frikkin' Taliban.

I still remember that fateful day in 2001.  I had arrived at work right after the first Tower was hit, and was watching live TV when the second plane swooped in at that hauntingly eerie angle, into the second Tower.....Always wondered if Flight 93 was going to come back and crash into Ft. Detrick here in Maryland.  And The Pentagon.......dammit, it drove me to tears, so much pain.

Let's not forget everyone who perished on this day six years ago.  The innocent civilians, the firefighters, the policemen, everyone.

I am Proud to Be An American.

I can't stop crying.  This clip is intense for me, a metal head driven to tears by Alan Jackson and that mandolin. I can't stop thinking of my little brother.   :'(

I never thought about that. I hope so to. I work in security for the state and things like this are always on our minds this time of year. I think alot of Americans forget about the soldiers that are over there fighting for us every day. The ones I meet that bitch about the war have never been in a foxhole. Our soldiers do what their camander and chief tell them weither they disagree with him or not. Folks that knock the troops piss me off big time. I always regreted that I never went into the service but they have that damn dont ask dont tell thing.
Meds doing well so far.

I appreciate what the people in the Armed Forces is doing for our country. I have a nephew who is in the reserves. I guess I have been one of the lucky ones since he is not in Iraq but he is suppose to be going to Afghanistan sometime in the future. It is also my daughter's birthday tomorrow, so even though I remember the bad, I also remember the good being my daughter. God Bless America...

MOONLIGHT1114, I know how rough it is. I lost my nephew on Aug. 3rd, 2005 in Iraq. Brett and 13 others were killed by an IED. They were all members of Lima Company.

I'm sorry for your lost RapidRod. If only our government would concentrate on terrorism and not Iraq, our troops would be in a much better position. Nonetheless, I will always appreciate what our troops are doing for us overseas.

This morning @ 9am est (I think) MSNBC is replaying their today show from that date, as it unfolded.
Such a nice day it started out as. I still find the real shock in the terrorist having been so focused, determined, patient and adaptable (to pass as normal passengers). It took a lot of hate to keep that focused, and determined. Thats a lesson worth noting.

RapidRod -- So sorry about the loss of your nephew.
Moonlight -- Tell your brother thanks for me also.

Regardless of my feelings for what is going on in Iraq, I try to remember those troops every single day.  They are, indeed, doing their job with excellence and bravery.
I remember how awful I thought Iraq was when I was serving there back in 1991 -- I can't even imagine how much worse it is there today.

I worked for Discover Card human resources and at the time our payroll was handled by the Morgan Stanley offices located in the WTC. I didn't lose any friends that day but have friends from Morgan Stanley who were and I'm sure still are traumatized by the events of that day. One friend who happened to be off on 9/11 was still living with the memories of the first WTC bombings.
We were in the process of moving back from Chicago to Columbus and I was suppose to be flying to Chicago that morning. I had just dropped Jeffrey off at work and the first tower was hit on my ride back to our apartment at the time. I immediately called Jeffrey from my cell phone. I spent the rest of that day watching the TV. I couldn't fly back and rental cars were sold out. Our cars were back in Chicago so I  ended up borrowing a friends car and driving back to Chicago to meet the movers. Our home in Columbus is in the flight path for CMH and for several weeks after 9/11 it was eerie and quiet because no planes were coming or going out of CMH.
- I'll never forget
- Thank you to our military
- Thank you to the first responders

9-11 changed the world and the US found its allies because of it.  As the world mourned 9/11 in disbelief, we (Australia) had a cowardly attack that killled many innocent people. Sadly this occurred again in Spain and again in the UK. Today I suspect many nations will remember this day with you and will not forget 9/11, or any other day, when innocent civilians became victims of terrorism.

meh... I lived 5 subway stops from the WTC on 9/11 and in many ways I'd like to forget that day.  My roommate at the time had worked at Windows on the World (restaurant) on the top floor so of course she knew people that were evaporated.  I'd just been laid off from my job 3 months before 9/11, but if I'd still been working I would have been exiting from the subway a mere 12 blocks away exactly at the time the planes hit... right where that video was shot of the first plane striking the building by those French people making a documentary of firefighters.

I could see the plume of smoke from my living room window for days, and the wind carried the stench of burnt rubber, concrete and human flesh directly over my apartment.  Oh, and within the next 3 months I somehow witnessed 2 people jump in front of subway cars to their untimely deaths -- unconnected I assume, but with all the anthrax scares on the subway lines I greatly added to my anxiety disorder which had just been diagnosed the previous year.  Thank goodness for pills.

Part of me still wonders how long this overwrought yearly ceremonial stuff is going to go on, but that's just me.

Philly~   I am sorry that this hit so close to home for you, since you were in NYC at the time.  I know some people don't care, some people don't want to dwell, some think we have mourned enough.

We are all different in our beliefs about this day, and for me, well, I still don't consider our family "military."  My brother was out of HS for about ten years before he decided to join the Army.  That was in '98, and then all of this crap happened.  Right in our faces.  I feel I need to remember, to honor those who have lost their lives, to honor those fighting for our country.

There have been so many helicopters that have gone down, and I would make my frantic calls to my sister-in-law, asking her to check her connections, to see if my brother was OK.  That's something I feel I should never have to do.

My brother has three small children.  The youngest was born in June 2005.  My brother got leave to come home for the birth of his son.  A few days after my brother was on US soil, a CH-47 went down, and all 8 crew members perished.  Seven, SEVEN, were from my brother's unit.  The eighth one was from another unit, and I can't help but wonder if he was my brother's "replacement" while he was on leave for the birth of his child.  My nephew is considered a miracle by me, because I think he saved my brother's life, just by his being born when he was.

This ALL hits home for me today, and I NEED to vent about it.  I know you understand.  Be proud of your freedom, be proud of your country today and every day.  I NEED this for me right now.

~Cindy

Cindy and all-

Be it known that I have read through this thread.  I am just having a hard time formulating a proper post for it.  Like many people, it still stirs up some pretty intense feelings.  While I am not always keen on the decision made by the Bush administration, I feel our troops deserve our respect and support.

"Never forget"?  I don't think that is even possible for me- short of some medical situation taking place.

Yes, I always want to respect and honor someone who died in the military.   However, I find it hard to do this on 9/11 and connect that with Iraq, as there WAS NO connection (Afghanistan is obviously a totally different situation).  I suppose I would choose to honor a fallen family remember on another day or something, but that's just me.

My comments about this yearly national mourning is that indeed it will one day fade.  I wonder how long commemoration went on (on a national level, not a personal one) for Pearl Harbor.  That's really all that my comment was about.

I'm just sick of certain politicians cashing in on 9/11 and squeezing whatever juice they can from it -- horribly distasteful for me.

Hey, when are we invading Iran?  That should provide more fun for everyone.

I just wish it would all stop, but I know it all goes much deeper than that.  I don't agree with Bush wholeheartedly, either, but this is something that is out of my control right now.

So I do what I can, even if its just a thread here for people to share their feelings/experiences in.

That connection isn't difficult for me at all.  Post 9/11, many people in this country decided to come to the service of their country.  It so happened that this service was directed toward Iraq.  Wherever and however they were called to do so, they still laid their lives on the line.  And a good many of these service people ended up there as a direct reaction to the events of 9/11, so the connection isn't difficult for me with regard to them.  The connection is less clear from the administrative end.

I don't think anyone will ever forget 9/11.  I won't.  I don't let my feelings of the current administration get in the way of that (I don't respect or honor Bush, but I do the soldiers).  I wish them all well and healing to all the families of 9/11 victims and people who have lost loved ones in the military in the senseless war that's going on now.

I was droving on the bridge that crosses the Potomac to go to work exactly 4 minutes after the plane crashed in the Pentagon. I saw that grey smoke. I called my boss told him I was not going to work and going back home, by fear that I could never cross back into DC if bridges were the next target. Then watched TV and frantically tried to call my family to tell them I was safe. I turn the TV off when they're going to show those plane crash, those pictures are already deeply engraved in my mind.

It's impossible to appropriately comment on a day like today.

One wants to think about this day differently, somehow, despite the fact that its impact and effects confront us endlessly. One wants to be able to think about this date, this anniversary, without partisan overtones and instead with recognition of the shared experience. The collective response to an appalling attack had such potential, such meaning for who we are as individuals and as a nation.

Today it's an arrow in political quivers.

Pain and suffering can beget pain and suffering, even when so many of us work to make it otherwise.

So we work harder, and do more, and maintain the notion that this is a day for all Americans. One to be remembered simply for loss, even in the midst of all other factors. Just loss.

I have two friends that lived in Arlington at the time.  One was driving to work that morning and was stopped in traffic under an overpass when the plane hit The Pentagon.  He was right there and felt everything vibrate and rumble, and he couldn't see what the hell was going on.  I can't imagine.  I probably would've felt disbelief and then absolute terror, esp knowing that two planes had hit the NYC Towers an hour earlier.

The second friend of mine was in Arlington, he was a Marine.  He said that as the plane came in towards The Pentagon, it actually had to "lift up" to get over the (Sheraton) hotel on its downward approach.  I saw that hotel and how low it was, even though its up on a hill, and saw where The Pentagon was in relation to it.  I drove by The Pentagon in 2002 as repairs were being done.  It was nighttime and I just started crying and couldn't stop.

I am so thankful I didn't lose anyone that day, so thankful.

A third friend worked in telecommunications and was running cable in the second Tower to be hit by a plane in NYC.  He was IN THE LOBBY when the second plane hit the building.  He got out, but to be IN the damn building?  And be able to get out?  I am sick just thinking about it now......Sorry had to vent some, and remind myself how grateful I am today.

On days like these, I stop and think about ALL the innocent victims of senseless violence and murder, whether they became victims in NYC, Baghdad, Palestine, Darfur or any of the other murder hot-spots in the world. I think about the motherless and fatherless children, I think of the families mourning babies. I think of the suffering we put our fellow human beings though in the name of "peace" and "democracy".

An innocent life is an innocent life, no matter what race or nationality their body happens to be or where they happen to live.

Yeah, I had a good friend that was in the building across the street from the WTC and got to see all those wretched souls jumping to their deaths.  Can you IMAGINE?  Poor thing was so utterly traumatized that he moved away from NYC back to the backwoods of South Carolina.

And Cindy... you're a lovely caring girl.  Can't wait to meet you if/when I come home to Slezeburg for Thanksgiving, and if not then for Christmas.  We MUST do lunch :)

Oh, the luxurious White's Ferry crossing?  It lets out quite close to Leesburg.  Leesburg is a very charming quaint town if I may say so.  Waterford even move so.

I usu don't watch Oprah, but she was in NYC for 9/11.  I was happy to see what was being done for a memorial at The Pentagon.

I have a sort of strange relation to the events of 9/11 that I really don't want to go into but to this day it haunts me very badly.  I have had a lot of questions about just being here and my purpose and the weird twist of fate that life throws at you sometimes....sometimes you wonder if an argument hadn't happened, or if someone didn't just change their mind about something what your life and those around you life's would have been like.

That said this was the first year that I didn't watch any coverage.  It's something I have tried unsuccessfully to avoid in the past.

I agree with the weird twist of fate thing, Iggy.  We can be gone in a moment, and sometimes things just happen that render us speechless.  All we can do is wonder WHY?

I am glad you have almost made it through this day.  It was exhausting for me.

Be careful with that question...sometimes the "why?" can almost drive you insane...or at least down a very dark path.

I have artfully dodged nearly all media coverage and mention of this today- save this thread.  Sorry, but it puts me in such a bad personal space.  I just don't have it in me to "go there" at the moment.  Truth is, I already went there a few weeks ago.  History Channel or National Geographic (I am forever tuned in to documentary shows) ran an entire evening of programming about 9/11 and the preceeding decade.  It's just like World War II programming for me in that I swear I won't watch it because I know how it will make me feel, but I get sucked in.  Next thing you know, I'm carrying this melancholy funk around with me for about 2 or 3 days after.

I watched Oprah's show "The Children of 9/11"......very sad.

It's a day I will never forget; my boss would not let us look at TV or try to find out what was happening the day the country was under attack, so I simply turned in notice, packed up and moved back to Alabama.....

I have not looked back since.

As a New Yorker there is so much to remember, so many sights and feelings.  Not meaning to demean all of the other awful images that I will always reflect upon but the thing that stands out now, the most everlasting image for whatever reason, was how perfectly blue the sky was that morning.

As Randy alludes to the weather was perfect, no heat or humidity under a cloudless, pristine blue sky and yet so much horror at the floor of that gorgeous sky.  It just should never have been, as so many atrocities in our world's history that breed such hatred between people also should never have been, but alas they have continued unabated.

Today it rained in New York and I could not help but remember how pefect that blue sky was on Tuesday morning, September 11, 2001.

Good thing I have never met your boss, 'Bama.

Yes, Tim, I get the funk, too, but I think its healthier to feel than to avoid.  I'm crazy like that.

Timtation~  I hear you, sweetie.  We all do things in our own way, nothing wrong with that.  I didn't mean to depress you more today with this, I just think its an appropriate time for reflection.  (Hey, you almost have 4000 posts!  :D)

Jody~   Yes, the blue sky was MAGNIFICENT that morning!  I think it was a Tuesday in 2001 as well.  I am sure of it.

Some of you may know me as ''Stone '' I am a D.C native, and pretty close to Cindy a.k.a [moon] I just wanted to tell all of you that she is just as sweet in person as she is on the computer .

I remember the morning of the attack all too well , I was working outside underneath the clear blue sky.  When out of nowhere the fighter jets began to appear everywhere around me . And then a customer of mine ran outside of her home to tell me that the Trade Center was under attack ! I was pissed !!!  I wanted to hop in my plane and kick some Taliban ass ! but there was a problem , I only had a truck and not enough gas . All kidding aside, it was a dreadful day of events that still haunts me to this day.

My best Buddy Rick has been in Iraq for a month now , he is the ''GUNNER'' in the Humvee when on patrol. Honestly ! I dont think he is coming back .

The song I most wanted to post for you- couldn't find a music link.  Put the words up, though.  The Alan Jackson is too much for me tonight.  I'd never make it!   ;D
