Meet & Greet: directions to the Crimson Lounge
« on: September 03, 2007, 12:21:02 PM »
The Powell Hotel is at 17 Powell Street. The Meet & Greet is at the Crimson Lounge at 687 McAllister St. (corner of Gough Street). You enter the Crimson Lounge through the Indigo Restaurant.

It's 1.1 miles from the hotel to the Indigo Restaurant.

The hotel and the Indigo Restaurant are both in good, safe areas. However, some of the blocks between the two locations are decidedly unpleasant and do not feel safe to me. I would consider walking only during daylight hours. I definitely would not walk it at night.

From the hotel to the Indigo Restaurant, there are two options: the #5 Fulton or the #21 Hayes bus. Both buses stop on Market & Powell. Take whichever bus comes first. You're going west, away from the Ferry Building.

1. The #5 Fulton to the corner of McCallister and Gough, diagonally across from the Indigo Restaurant.

2. The #21 Hayes to Hayes & Gough St. Walk four blocks north on Gough to McAllister.

You can also take the underground Muni Metro if you don't mind walking a few extra blocks. From the Powell Street Muni Station, take any outbound train two stops to Van Ness Avenue. Walk north on Van Ness four blocks to McAllister. Make a left on McAllister and walk two blocks to Gough.

For the return trip, there is only one Muni bus:  the #21 Hayes bus at the corner of Grove & Gough Street. (Grove is parallel to and two blocks south of McAllister).

Sharing a taxi would be a good idea, especially if you leave the Meet & Greet late. The fare shouldn't be too much when you split it among 3 or 4 people.

Please do not walk between the hotel and the Crimson Lounge after sundown.

Allan, I am curious about whether this risky area you speak of is known as the 'tenderloin'?

Mike,
Yeah, it's the Tenderloin. The drug dealers and prostitutes definitely make it creepy. It's not my idea of a pleasant San Francisco stroll.

To get to the Meet & Greet, another way to avoid this area would be to take the underground Muni Metro two stops to Van Ness Avenue. Walk four blocks up Van Ness (north) to McAllister, turn left, then two blocks to Gough Street. You can take any Muni Metro train that goes in the outbound direction.

In general, if you're going for a walk along Market Street, walk toward the Ferry Building.

How about meeting in the Hotel lobby @ 5:30 that way we can walk as a group to the meet & greet.

Dan J, not a bad idea but consider that you'll have a complimentary Muni pass in hand. So why not hop the underground railway? Once at Van Ness, those six blocks might be a bit of a walk but a mile is certainly going to tax some in the group.
Guess we'll all be taking cabs back to the hotel.
xxx,
Mike
P.S. I do plan on doing some shopping at the Safeway at 2020 market st...for my daily intake of bananas......probably right on edge of the Tenderloin area.

Mike,

To get your bananas, just cross the street and go to the Westfield Shopping Center. In the lower level, there's a very nice and large Bristol Farms Market that has a good variety of fruit, beverages, and other food items. I'm pretty sure I saw bananas there the last time I looked.

The Safeway at 2020 Market is not in the Tenderloin. The neighborhood is called "Upper Market."

Rough boundaries of the Tenderloin:

South:   Market St.
North:   O'Farrell St.
East:     Mason St.
West:    Polk Street

Last year in Montreal we would all meet up in the hotel lobby and go as a group to functions. This is what Dan was trying to suggest. The time we were at Montreal we did not figure out the transit system till the last day there. Also we only took it then because it rained.

I don't think it's practical for the AMGers to try to board a bus or Muni Metro train at once, simply because there might not be enough room. A lot of people in San Francisco use Muni, and I don't think there would be a good reaction if thirty or so people tried to cram into a single bus to go to the Meet & Greet or to the AIDS Memorial Service. It would probably be better to split into smaller groups and take different buses. There are a few different Muni options to get to the Meet & Greet as well as to the AIDS Memorial Grove.
