Female Wondering My Risk

(1/1)

bluebell81:
Hello everyone, I normally post at Medhelp but I heard about this site and thought I would ask you what you think of my risk. I am very scared.

Beginning the second week of June of this year and ending around the 24th of June, I began a sexual relationship with a man (I am a female) I had been dating since January 2007. I am 24 and he is 34. He told me prior to his relationship with me he was in a 4 year relationship that ended in 2004. Unprotected sex was part of that relationship.

Anyway, I told him he needed to use condoms when we had sex. I discovered on three to four times during sex he took off the condom towards the end of the act, and then would pull out. I think on one time he did not pull out entirely so semen may have gotten into me. I asked him why he took off the condoms and he said he thought it would feel better. I then asked him about his HIV status and he said he does not have it but also told me he has never been tested. I brought it up about a week later and he was very assertive in telling me he did not have it. He also said "wouldnt I be sick by now if I had it?"

I know that HIV in hetersexual non IV using men who have never been to prison is fairly rare, but I am worried. I am upset because he took off the condoms and put my health at risk.

3 weeks after the last time he took off the condom, around June 24, I came down with a high fever, a sore throat with white spots on my tonsils, fatigue and no appetite. I went and had a 3-week HIV rapid oral test and it was negative. I then went to my general doctor and the mono spot test came back positive, which means my body showed monocleosis antibodies. I understand that mono and ARS symptoms are indentical. I am very very very worried that maybe my body had antibodies from mono from an earlier infection from years ago and it showed up on the test and that it was really ARS I was experiencing. I am now at 7 weeks post exposure. I am so scared to test because I have a sinking feeling it will test positive.

What do you all think? I think I am going to go tomorrow to be tested, but I want to know what you all think about my risk. Do you think I was at a high risk? Do you think I had mono or ARS?

Thank you so much for your time.

I am sorry, I meant to add to my post that at 10-days post exposure I had an STD panel done and tested negative for all STD's. I also had a negative rapid test for HIV that was negative done at 10 days.

Ann:
Blue,

You have had a risk and you do need to test, however, only a negative result at three months past your last incident of unprotected intercourse will be conclusive.

Symptoms, or even the LACK of symptoms, means absolutely nothing when it comes to hiv infection. ONLY testing at the appropriate time will reliably reveal your hiv status.
