I'm was having  trouble with loading the video so looked up the lyrics and fell in love with the song.  The bolded section is exactly how I felt last year when I was in my most desperate place:

Everywhere I turn, I hurt someone
But there's nothing I can say to change
the things I've done
Of all the things I hid from you
I cannot hide the shame
And I pray someone, something will come
to take away the pain

There's no way out of this dark place
No hope, no future
I know I can't be free
But I can't see another way
I can't face another day

Tell me where, did I go wrong
Everyone I loved, they're all gone
I'd do everything so differently
but I can't turn back the time
There's no shelter from the storm
inside of me

There's no way out of this dark place
No hope, no future
I know I can't be free
But I can't see another way
I can't face another day

I can't believe the words I hear
It's like an answer to a prayer
When I look around I see
This place, this time, this friend of mine

I know its hard but you
found somehow
To look into your heart and
to forgive me now
You've given me the strength to see
just where my journey ends
You've given me the strength
to carry on

I see the path from this dark place
I see my future
Your forgiveness has set me free
On and I can see another way
I can face another day!

I see the path, I can see the path
I see the future
I see the path from this dark place
I see the future

I see the path, I can see the path
I see the future

My take on the song (and your subject line) is that waiting on someone was what got me in so much trouble.  Whether it was waiting for others to stop being cruel, waiting for a job to find me or even waiting for a God to show he existed and that there was a reason to live....it was that calling out for help to all of those that when they went unanswered only made me feel more desperate and dark.

I did eventually find someone though and it happened at the 11:59 mark of my crisis and the person who led me out was me - even if it was just to stop myself from letting go completely.  There have been many others who have helped me to climb out of the darkness and without whom I don't know how far down there I would still be, but they were only able to reach so far into the dark and needed me to offer myself to them so that they could reach me.

Update:  I just got the video to load....and I HATED it.  I am really tired of the white person using the black gospel type singers in the background  device to convey spirituality in videos.  Maybe it is just me, but I always wait for Madonna to come out in the middle and sing like a prayer.  Also the video I think undercuts the weight of the great lyrics.

Thank you for bringing this song to my attention though because the lyrics alone are worth it! :-*

Modified: I just noticed that you did say to "close your eyes and listen" I should have taken your advice!
