A Must Read Book
« on: July 28, 2007, 10:25:43 AM »
I'm about half way through this book and it is an absolute must read for everyone, but probably especially for those of us who need medications.

The title is The Body Hunters.  It is by Sonia Shah.

From Amazon.com -

"Shah demonstrates how a skyrocketing drug market has accelerated the search for "warm bodies" on which to test new products. Saying that the drug industry's main interest "is not enhancing or saving lives but acquiring stuff: data," Shah focuses in particular on the habitual use of a placebo control group, who receive little or no medical care. Shah concludes by spotlighting how drug regulators turn a blind eye to "coercion and misunderstanding between subjects and researchers," and how researchers actively seek countries that can provide them with a high death rate, so crucial to their data."

Shocked and appalled, but in no way surprised.

You don't think they dole out our HIV meds for free out of compassion do you?  It's a prime opportunity for free guinea pigs and lots and lots of numbers for the data banks.  We're all collectively contributing to the Larger Science God and must do our duty for humanity.

The fact that HIV sufferers now get to live is really simply a sort of "collateral damage."

My experiences with HIV medicine have shown this to be true. In France, once JM was too far gone to be saved, they pushed his poor little body to unspeakable limits to see what might happen. It was absolutely terrifying.

My own experiences with Zerit, AZT and DDI were hardly a mid-summer stroll on the beach, either. Every time I took one of those damnable medications, I was well aware that I was essentially a test subject. This is yet another case of the failure of the "diabetes paradigm" and HIV-lite to properly account for how HIV can ravish our lives in the post-Lazarus syndrome world.
