Hey Adam,

Yes, HIV positive people are prone to particular sorts of cancer. When immune function declines these cancers can take hold. An example would be certain kinds of lymphoma.

The best way to protect yourself from HIV related cancer is to address the underlying problem itself - ie HIV infection. So using HAART to suppress viral load is the best way.

Eggy,

Stop being such self obsessed bore. This thread has nothing to do with you. It's about Adam. Keep your neurotic nonsense in your own thread.

you mentioned lymphoma, and one of the symptom of lymphoma is a tumor or bump in your crotch area, so what the hell do you want me not to say?

According to a french study, an incomplete immune reconstitution even with a suppresed viral load, is related with an increased incidence of cancer. According to this same study, only people who achieve a cd4 cout above 500 CD4 have the same mortality range as the general population (HIV-). For this reason HAART should be available to all HIV+ patients before complete immune reconstitution is impossible.
Epstein Barr virus is linked to limphoma even in HIV- people.

Reference please? I'd like to read this paper, as I'd be interested to see where they justify the line at which complete immune reconstitution is impossible. Surely this will vary by individual? A person whose normal CD4 is 400 compared to a person whose normal CD4 is 1,400 will have gaps appearing at different CD4 counts - that's my intuitive response.

HIV positive people show increased incidence in pretty much every kind of cancer. The effectiveness of HAART in reducing the incidence of these cancers varies considerably - from KS, which has become a rarity in the HAART era, to non-Hodgekins lymphoma (NHL), which really hasn't decreased very much at all.

Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) is the causal agent of NHL, in the same way HHV-8 and HPV cause KS and cervical cancer respectively. People with HIV+ have been shown to have poorer control of EBV, even when the HIV is undetectable. Hence more lymphoma.

I guess the key thing is not to smoke, and to have a good diet and stay within your target weight - these are all major causes of cancer in the population. I would go as far to say they are more important than being HIV+, so if you tick all these boxes, you may even edge ahead of Joe average in the cancer stakes. The kinds of cancer HIV+ people get are always likely to be a different mix than the general populations anyway.

i have a question,, when you say to stay within your target weight, what about your weight increasing due to muscle gain and not fat gain?

One of my Oncologists made an odd statement at my last checkup.  He stated that KS isn't really an cancer.  It is instead a viral infection very similar to herpes.  I mentioned that it was my understanding KSHV was considered an underlying cause, but KS it's self was a cancer.  He replied no, studies are beginning to show that it's purely viral dependent.  His thought was, KS often clears up as CD4 rises, therefore it couldn't be a true cancer.

Not sure if I agree or disagree.

I can not find the french study right now, but it was one of those studies suggesting to start treatment before cd4 dropped below 350 cd4. It also said marginal increases were seen after 3 yerar on treatment. Of course this is not for everybody. Every university or medical reserach center is commited to prove something, while others are commited to prove the opposite. So you can find scientific studies proving completely opposite things.
Many viruses are the cause of certain cancers.
Breast cancer virus:

Cancer of the uterus is caused by the Herpes Papiloma Virus and Kaposis Sarcoma is caused by the HHV-8  virus.
