Another problem
« on: June 13, 2007, 01:05:32 PM »
Along with testing positive my Dr also told me I had low blood platlet count.  Apparently 140 to 400 is the normal range  and mine were 31.  Two weeks later they were 31.  I saw a Hematology specialist, and thought that the virus was the cause and that they would rebound as my body adapted, but he really didn't say anything specific.  This last time they tested again and it was 79.

Hopefully I will never have to sit in that waiting room ever again.  Apperently a lot of the people he sees are being treated for cancer.

Has anyone had this? Or any other knowledge?

Thanks - Mike

Mike,

That probably means you have an iron deficiency (anemia).  It can also mean that you might have some other condition.  Always check with your doctor.
Have you found a good doctor Mike?  It is important that you have a good relationship with your doctor, your life will depend on it.

Actually that is another thing.  I really don't like my Dr.  She was okay when I never had to see her, but now I am thinking of changing.  My best friend is an RN who used to work in the same department as my Dr. and he never liked her either.  He did say she was very smart though, his Dr is a Gay Male and I think I would be much more comfortable with him.  I think I will call my HIV coordinator and ask him about changing.

I prefer my doctors to be gay.  Just a personal preference.  I also like to have a internal medicine or general practitioner instead of a ID only doctor.  I feel that sometimes, specialist are so involved in what they do, that they might miss something if it is not in their area.
I love my doctor and his staff.  He has been around a long time and saw the worst of the epidemic back in the 80's.  He is in the Castro, which is always nice. ( i like to take the day off for the doctor's visit and just hang out after my appointment).

By all means, get a new doctor!! You need to have one you like and you feel confident with.

I'm with Kaiser. Just call the 800 number and say that you want to get a new PCP, be open about a gay PCP, Kaiser trains their staff about diversity and if you have a problem with your identity and the PCP or the nurse you can always ask for a supervisor. Training is good, but some people won't get it, you always have the risk of getting somebody that won't understand you.

To change the pic, click on the "profile" blue button, then "forum profile information" and there you can change your pic :)
