South African Health Minister
« on: June 06, 2007, 09:08:58 PM »
Did anyone read the article about Manto Tshabalalala-Msimang pulling out of the South African Aids conference because she wasn't playing a "key role." Is it just me or is that ridiculously petty. It pisses me off when US leaders refuse to participate in conversations about HIV in the States but how can a health minister in South Africa not be apart of such a conference.  ???And what does that say about solidarity with the people in your country? I hate ego.

I had to vent a little about that.

 >:( Vent and VENT because it's criminal. Actually, it's more politics than ego. The S. African ANC-led Government of President Mbeki works overtime to prevent the treatment of HIV with anything other than quack remedies, garlic, etc, under the (racist and xenophobic) guise of genetic African "exceptionalism". The HIV infection rate in Southern Africa is staggering. Poverty is not the main obstacle; Uganda, with it's terrible history and social problems, has wonderful success in dealing with its crises. If you have not read my posts direct from S. Africa's POZ activists, the TAC, read them ("AIDS Activism"). More importantly, log onto their website and spread the word. International political solidarity and one-on-one assistance and support go hand in hand.
