hello there. im absolutely horrified & am in desperate need of some comfort. my sex life has been fairly innocent, in fact im still a virgin. however, in the beginning of this year..i had a lapse of judgement. i received oral sex from a guy that was very promiscuos. first we made out & then he proceeded to roughly finger me. i think he cut me with his fingernail during fingernail. for a short period of time i sat on his face & he performed cunnilingus on me. i did feel his teeth but i think it was the sucking motion that felt like biting. i didn't see any visible blood in his mouth, just saliva. a month later i developed bad bronchitis & all year i haven't felt myself. the fear of contracting HIV from this event has made me so anxious that i can barely function. my friends are telling me that im being totally irrational & that their are no documented cases of a woman becoming infected with HIV as a result of receiving cunnilingus. i spoke to my gynecologist and he said you can't get HIV from receiving cunnilingus. i didn't give oral to him..i just received. this has taken over my life and im living in immense fear. should i be worried? everyone says this doesn't warrant testing. is is true that receiving oral is equivalent to the risk of french kissing because you're only being exposed to saliva? i received oral from a guy friend a couple weeks after, however, i wasnt as worried. i've only received cunnilingus and fingering. please help me!  :-X

In this case you should believe your gynecologist. You were never even remotely at risk for HIV during this incident.

The only really risky thing in your whole scenario is how it reveals how little you know about HIV transmission. This epidemic is going to be around for a longtime to come. So you need to become better informed about the real risks right now.

Please read our lesson about transmission. There's a link to it in the Welcome thread which opens this section. You'll get all of the basics you need to know. Essentially it's no intercourse ever without a condom. Period.

As far as this incident you have absolutely no cause for concern. Period. End of story.

Get on with your life.

thankyou so much  :) how come all these websites like the CDC website try to scare you and say "it is possible because blood from the mouth can enter the urethra or any vaginal cuts." even clinics say it warrants testing. i heard he would have to be profusely bleeding at the mouth, is this true? why do all these websites say it has occured?

We can't be responsible for what other websites say. Often when they refer to a risk it is one in theory. But in the real world of HIV transmission just doesn't happen that way. It's unfortunate because of course it scares people unnecessarily.

The real risk for HIV transmission sexually is via unprotected vaginal or anal intercourse. Some also report that giving oral to a man, particularly if ejaculation takes place orally, is risky. But there is a lot of evidence that is not so.

Stick to using a condom everytime you have intercourse, when you get around to doing that, and you'll be fine as far as HIV is concerned. Really.

you're very intelligent when it comes to this disease. are you a doctor or an HIV specialist? yeah you're right the internet is all about scare tactics & liability. can you explain to me though why transmission via receptive cunnilingus doesn't happen? what if the guy did have some blood in his mouth from bleeding gums or a cut? couldn't it get into my urethra or any cuts or abrasions i may have? i never understood this. maybe you could clarify.  :)

Brittney,

Hiv is a fragile, difficult to transmit virus that is primarily transmitted INSIDE the human body, as in unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse. When hiv finds itself outside the body, the differing temperature, moisture content and pH levels all damage the virus and render it unable to infect.

Not only is saliva not infectious, but it also contains over a dozen different proteins and enzymes that again damage the virus and render it unable to infect.

Even if the guy was heavily bleeding from the mouth, he would be unlikely to transmit the virus to you if he went down on you. Hiv can only latch onto and infect very specific cells and those types of cells are not found on the outer parts of your vagina, nor are they found in small cuts.

You had absolutely NO risk of infection from this incident.

Here's some things you need to know for the future:

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL STIs together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with a sexually transmitted infection. Sex with a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through all three condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence. You will be able to make sure your fella is using them properly.

Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

When you start having anal or vaginal intercourse, that is the time to start having your routine check-ups. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Condoms prevent hiv infection. It really is that simple!

Brit,

It doesn't matter if he had "it" or not, you were in no danger of becoming infected when he went down on you. Just because a teacher says something doesn't necessarily make it true.

If you cannot bring yourself to believe us that you had no risk in this incident, go ahead and test and collect your negative result. There is NO doubt in my mind that is the result you will get.

Make sure that condoms are being used when you do start having anal or vaginal intercourse and you'll remain hiv negative. It really is that simple.

the only thing that is alarming is that i had cut myself around the vulva area while shaving. does the cut have to be fresh? how does that work? he had also cut me while fingering me. there was definitely trauma to the vaginal area. i bleed very easily down there. i really am so horrified..i cant eat, sleep or function. are you sure the result will be negative? i got very sick a month later. has anyone ever become infected this way? i was just concerned cuz there was trauma to the exposed skin on my vagina =/

i really appreciate this reassurance.

also i know this is very EMBARASSING but i sometimes masturbate with an electric toothbrush & i bleed a little cuz i may get cut while doing it around the vulva area, does this make me susceptible? i think i did it the night before =/

i really wanna know about this cuz i thought it would make me more susceptible.

ps ; are you saying that you hope im using my own toothbrush for my own safety or the safety of others? lmao. a couple of times i grabbed a few around the house but it's just my family  ;D

Brittney,

It doesn't matter what he had in his saliva, it didn't and doesn't pose an HIV risk to you. As you've been told repeatedly this isn't a HIV situation. You should take the time to read our Welcome Thread which contains links to our extensive HIV transmission lessons.

Seriously. Read the lessons, learn and move on.

lets say i had some cuts on my vulva area from masturbation which i do and there was some blood present in his saliva, can you explain why infection CANNOT result despite my open vaginal cuts?

thankyou  :)

Ann, one of our Forums Moderators, has already explained this to you in some detail when she said:

Even if the guy was heavily bleeding from the mouth, he would be unlikely to transmit the virus to you if he went down on you. Hiv can only latch onto and infect very specific cells and those types of cells are not found on the outer parts of your vagina, nor are they found in small cuts.

oh i see. this forum is amazing by the way. how come all these CDC websites keep saying there is a risk if the guy had an oral cut and i had a vaginal cut? seriously, im very cut down there all the time. if i get tested can are you SURE it will come back negative? are there any documented cases of a woman being infected by receptive cunnilingus? i heard a few people were infected by performing cunnilingus on an infected woman due to some menstrual blood, true? everyone has told me there is a risk. my gynecologist said it's possible but "highly unlikely." another website said the chances are very remote but it is possible. the electric toothbrush masturbation left me with some serious vaginal abrasions. another professional had told me that in order for the virus to infect a cut it would have to be pushed into the cut, is this true? he said bleeding onto a cut isnt' effective & that blood has to mix. maybe i am being somewhat irrational. i just don't understand why i keep hearing the same thing from websites & health professionals. are the people on here specialized in the area of HIV? if i get tested it will undoubtedly be negative?

yea i think i will test, good idea. i need that peice of mind. BUT it just alarmed me i had open cuts and inflammation. some nurse told me something about microcuts that blood tainted saliva could get into. i don't know. as long as you're 100% sure my results will be negative. so there are no exceptions to the rule? does my risk go up everytime i receive oral or my risk stays at zero?  :-\

another thing is that even the gyno saw that my vulva area was all cut up. the guy sucked on this area vigorously. i didnt shower after either. see this what i mean about the website..can you clarify? aids.org says "the risk is very low." see but they don't say there is no risk. Theoretical: Cunnilingus carries a theoretical risk of HIV transmission for the insertive partner (the person who is licking or sucking the vaginal area) because infected vaginal fluids and blood can get into the mouth. (This includes, but is not limited to, menstrual blood). Likewise, there is a theoretical risk of HIV transmission during cunnilingus for the receptive partner (the person who is having her vagina licked or sucked) if infected blood from oral sores or bleeding gums comes in contact with vulvar or vaginal cuts or sores."[/quote] the body.com states that. how come it says that if his gums are bleeding it can get into a vaginal cut or sore? i mean you cant see someone's gums bleeding right?

Brit-

Theoretical risk is a rhetorical device used by scientists to indicate that, essentially, anything is possible. That does not mean that such things are probable in real life situations.

If I told you that it is theoretically possible that you'd be hit by a meteorite if you left your house I'd be right, because in theory it's possible. But do you avoid the outdoors in fear of crashing debris?

Cunnilingus is not a risky activity, especially being on the receptive end. Saliva contains enzymes that inhibit replication of the virus. The man who ate you out wasn't gushing blood and neither were you.

It's time to back away from the computer for a while and enjoy the weather (meteorite threat or not).

Brit,

Once again, you had no risk for hiv.

About the toothbrush thing - while the abrasions this causes have no relevance during cunnilingus where hiv is concerned, you ARE opening yourself up to a nasty bacterial infection. I suggest you get yourself a standard vibrator that you won't hurt yourself with.

If you continue using the toothbrush, I hope you start using your own and your own only - one that you do NOT use on your mouth. How would you feel if your  mother also used this method of masturbation and sometimes used YOUR toothbrush? It's unhygenic in the extreme. There are bacteria present in the perianal area (just behind your vagina) that can make you very sick with diarrhea and you could very possibly pick this bacteria up on your toothbrush and transfer it to your - or a family member's - mouth. Ick!

I've got no problem with you using a toothbrush - whatever trips your trigger - but don't be making yourself or others sick because of it. Use some common sense!

Ann

PS - Make sure you read the Welcome thread and pay attention to the forum posting guidelines. I don't want to see you posting advice in other threads again. You're hardly in any position to do so.

Thank you for your cooperation.

yeah i called today for a test & the woman at the clinic [the HIV counselor] said that saliva doesn't protect against the HIV virus..she told me that she doesn't know where i got false information. she said saliva is not infectious but it certainly doesn't make the virus any more difficult to transmit. she said if this where the case then it would be used to cure HIV. she said saliva as a barrier is false. she said receiving cunnilingus is a small risk but still there is a risk. what are your opinions on what she told me? is it proven that saliva is a barrier and makes HIV difficult to transmit?

Brit,

It has been proven scientifically that saliva contains over a dozen different proteins and enzymes that inhibit and damage hiv. Nobody ever said it was a barrier. A barrier is a different concept.

As we've told you, if you cannot bring yourself to believe you were not at risk during this incident, get tested and let the negative result speak for itself.

Without hesitation, if you have told everything involved in the encounter, you will be negative. There is no HIV risk in getting eaten out.

And to second Ann, I said "inhibit", did not use the word "barrier" which would have been misleading.

You really got to move on, girlie. Your persistence in trusting what you'd prefer to hear over the truth is getting really tired.

If you choose to continue to look elsewhere to find (mis)information that will feed your fears, that's your choice. But it is not our job to have to answer every new bit you come up with that feeds your unwarranted fears.

Get tested, collect the inevitable negative result and move on with yoru life.

yea i understand but the fear is getting worse. i mean the guy vigorously sucked on my clit and my friend's mom who is a nurse said that if he had a cut on his lip he could transmit the virus to me. we kissed first, then he roughly fingered me and i sat on his face and he performed cunnilingus on me. i was eaten out another time by a different guy. does this risk go up everytime you do this or is the risk still none? im really scared that i caught it. he might've had a cut on his lip that rubbed on my vaginal cut????

Just go test, I see no sense wasting anymore time with questions.

We're done here. Go get tested and collect your negative result and move on.

Your feelings have nothing to do with HIV science. And your "friend's Mom who is a nurse" is wrong about what she said about transmission. If she even said it.

This back and forth is a waste of time here. Just because you're still anxious doesn't change the facts of the situation. You weren't at risk. Period. You're going to test negative if you get tested.

I'd say it's time to call a halt with the bulletins from you and what are essentially the same questions over and over. Really. We've done what we can do for you. Get your test, collect your negative and in the meantime, get productively busy in your life. Then you won't have so much time to stew over unreal risks.

ok here is a different risk. the guy im monogamously with has a step dad who's cheating on his mom with a woman of unknown status.the mother is unaware. however, my boyfriend has used his stepdad's electric razor on occasion. one time he actually cut his skin with it. he said there was no visible blood on it. is this an HIV risk or no? i heard it has to be fresh blood?

i will because this website is brilliant  :)

my friend found me this article. what do you think of it?

http://www.poz.com/articles/427_2490.shtml

it says there is a chance. i just keep thinking he cut his lip & i did have vaginal cuts. i also went to gynecologist a week later and was told me i had a vaginitis infection..wouldn't this make me more susceptible or no?

Brittney,

The article you link to bears no relevance to your case. I think you'll find they refer to someone performing oral sex on a man. Whether you like it or not, having someone go down on you is not a risk for HIV infection either way. It really is time you moved on to other things.

And I agree with Roddles, if your boyfriend wants to ask questions he should join and ask them himself.

Ok Brittney,

This has gone far enough. Yes we are HIV experts. No you won't contract HIV from oral even if this fella has been with everyone in the county.

And we've told you this more times than I care to remember. I'm flinging this to the Moderators.

ok im sorry. im just really scared & its so hard to distinguish fact from fiction. so many websites that i thought were reliable are claiming with any vaginal ulceration it is possible. im just very frightened. sorry.

Brit-

A healed shaving nick has turned into an ulceration?

And exactly how many people over how long a period must someone have sex before a virgin decides that he is "extremely promiscuous"?

We have all tried with you and have given you excellent, truthful information. How you choose to accept this is up to you, but hammering away at the same point over and over, each time citing the cousin of an aunt of your best-friend's grandmother whose husband is having an affair isn't gonna change the facts.

One more time now, dear:

You cannot get HIV from receiving cunnilingus.

i know you probably think im crazy but in this world of scare tactics and people who're supposed to be knowledgeable such as nurses & health teachers telling you there is a risk its hard to feel assured.

I'm sure you won't understand the reasoning for your timeout you are about to get. You'll find out real quick Ann doesn't play.
