Starting the meds... tonight!
« on: May 19, 2007, 08:06:26 AM »
Hello!

So I brought them home and looked at them: blue pills (Truvada) and yellow ones (Sustiva). I have laid some on the table, opened up my new pill box and filled it up for the week.

I have taken Monday and Tuesday off work, just in case. There's no way of telling how my body and brain will react to this hurricane!

Tonight is the big night. I will eat at around 6pm, then go to a jazz concert and when I am back I'll take my first dose and go to bed with my fingers crossed! Will I be able to sleep? I doubt it! Last night I didn't sleep properly as I was thinking about starting the meds!

I am a bit worried, but I also know that there's no alternative: my cd4 is low and I have to start taking charge of my health. I have been playing Russian roulette with my health until today and all considered I have been quite lucky, but my luck will run out eventually so it's time to get a bit of help from those harmless-looking pills!

Think of me tonight!!!

Hey there,

I know how you must feel..please try not to worry so much though.  I know that when my husband started he felt just like you are feeling now.  He had an uneventful night!  I think I was up more that night than he was, just waiting for something to happen.

I know everyone's reaction to meds are different, but I've spoken to many who are on this combo and most of them do quite well.  I expect you'll be just fine!

I will keep you in my thoughts tonight...

I started mine on the Wednesday of Thanksgiving and the first night was the worst.  I would suggest you clear the floor of any items between the bed and the bathroom.  YOu might think about leaving a light on so it's easier to find.  The problem will be the dizziness most experience when first starting on Sustiva.  The room spun for me when I had to go to the bathroom to pee.  The best description I can provide is it was like being really really drunk.  On night 2 it wasn't as bad and by night 4 it was a non-event. (at least for me)

If you are groggy in the morning, a good strong cup of coffee will clear the cobwebs for most.  It's the best advice someone gave me on this forum and it works.

Let us know how you do.  Sending good thoughts to you  !!

Good luck....I started on  Sustiva/Truvada in Feb 2006.  I was tired and went to bed early (I think more from the shock of being diagnosed, rather than the medicine).
I never took a day off work and was able to perform no problem.

I am currently on Atripla and living life 'normally'  :)

Peace

I'm  on the sustiva and I took the week off when I was planning on starting.  I was prepared for the worst.  In the end, I didn't need to take the week off.  I remember taking my first dose and laying there in bed thinking... humm.... I wonder if they really put anything in these.  I didn't feel a thing till I got up in the middle of the  night to go to the bathroom.  Then I could tell... just the off balance feeling.  But that only lasted a few nights and now it is smooth sailing.  I could have gone to work the next day with no problem at all.

Don't get stressed out!  Everyone does react a bit differently but most likely this will be no big deal for you.

Hello Newbie,

Relax !!  Reread eveything that has been posted so far to you. My suggestion to you, is to make sure you drink enough water everyday. If you don't drink enough water on a daily basis, you should increase  it.

Things will work out..., take it one day at a time !!

You will be fine Newbie,

Although everyone experience different side effects, we all have stories about starting meds for the first time.  I have been on Atripla for 2 months and my first night was the worst, but now that I am past that first couple of weeks on meds, I must say that it was worth it. Just look at starting meds as going to war against the virus.  That first night on Atripla for me was horrible but it was the drugs fighting the virus and so far the drugs are winning the war.

I try never to think of the side effects when starting a new regimen, unless they're like the life-threatening ones I have with the Trizivir (I carry that warning card in my wallet).  The first few days on the Sustiva you will probably feel, like someone else said, drunk.  But that will pass. Just try not to eat anything that has a high fat content when you take it; this seems to make the side effects worse.  I wish you pleasant dreams! :-*

Thank you to everyone that posted for me. It is really nice to see that so many people are willing to contribute.

So here it goes.

I went to the concert and it lasted longer than I thought so I was already cursing myself for being late in taking my first dose! But eventually I got home and at 11.15 I swallowed the pills. I laid in bed, bf by my side, waiting... I could feel a strange taste in my throat coming up after a while, sort of acidic, nothing major. Then I fell asleep quite easily.

I woke up this morning at 5am and went to the toilet. I felt more or less ok. A bit hung over but I didn't trip or anything. Then I went back to bed and got up at 9.30 feeling more or less ok.  I am so relieved!

Now I just feel a bit light headed and tired but then again I have been feeling tired for the past month so I don't think it's anything to do with the meds.

Well I'll keep you posted if something else happened and once again thank you for your comfort and reassurance.

By the way, I am drinking a lot of water as reccommended, but I have added some milk thistle to it as I know it's good for the iiver. Does anyone know anything against that?

Hi,  I wish you the best --- I started in February 07 with Atripla (which contains both Sustiva & Truvada).  Side effects have been manageable...now I take it during the day (in the mornings) and can function really well.  So, all will be well. Just ensure you don't take any fatty food within 2 hours of taking the meds.

All the best - -please report back and let us know how you are doing.

Glad to hear the first night went well for you.  I am sure the tiredness will pass as the viral load goes down.  I noticed a lot of energy after a couple of weeks which my doctor indicated the tiredness was just from the energy being exerted to fight the virus.  Curious as to what you'll  experience dreamwise.

When is the next doc/labs appointment ?

I have an appointment with my doctor tomorrow afternoon. She just want to make sure I don't have excessive side effects, which is nice of her. But my next lab test will be in 4 weeks and then once a month after that until I become undetectable I guess.

Sounds like you're adjusting to the meds o.k. and that's great!  I personally don't know anything about taking milk thistle, but you need to tell your doctor if you're continuing to take it.  Hope everything goes well for you! :-*

For the records: Milk thistle can accentuate the side effects of Efavirenz/Sustiva. My doc said that it is up to me if I want to carry on taking it as I haven't had major side effects so far.
I have decided to discontinue it.

She said that she expect my Viral Load to fall from 110000 to at least 10000 in 4 weeks. I was hoping that it'd fall more than that... Has anyone got experience on this?
