Just learned of ARS and very scared!
« on: May 20, 2007, 12:34:28 PM »
Hello everyone.  I’m looking for people to share their thoughts and experience with while I’m waiting for my test results.  Last August I was visiting Kiev and spent an unprotected night (3 times vaginal intercourse) with a sex worker.  I knew at the time it was very risky, but didn’t know much more about the disease.  Just last week I read for the first time about ARS and it’s possible symptoms.  Looking back I know that at incident +28 days I was struck with what I called severe tonsillitis.  I would have considered Mono had I not had it before.  I had massively swollen tonsils, a feeling best described as gravity doubling, and I believe I had a slight fever.  I don’t believe I had a rash, but it was so long ago I can not remember.  The doctor prescribed antibiotics, and within a few days I was felling much better. Approximately 40 days later (incident +70 days) I was struck again with identical symptoms.  In February, I read about the high HIV rates in Ukraine and got scared.  I ordered a two pack rapid home test kit off the internet.  The type where I prick my finger, place a drop of blood in the hole in the test cassette with a drop of solution.  I waited 15 minutes and read a negative the first time as well as a week later.  While I was reading of ARS I stumbled upon an FDA warning sent to the exact business I purchased the kits from warning of false negatives and lack of FDA approval.  In the last 4 months I have dropped approximately 25 lbs with only a slight change in diet (choosing water over Soda) or exercise.  I also remember a period of skin peeling around my fingernails and fingertips, although I can not pinpoint a time.  In the last month I seem to be easily dehydrated, and take anywhere from 4-6 trips to the bathroom to urinate.  Within the last two weeks my pinky and ring finger has been numb on my left had with discomfort in my elbow as well as muscle cramps in my right calf.  I know the only way to diagnose HIV is through professional or Home Access and not symptoms.  Does anyone have knowledge or experience with the 15 minute home self kits that are not approved?  When during the infection do people experience weight loss or other signs of progression?  I want to learn more, but fear it scared me too late.  I pray several times daily, and vow to change my ways.  I can not keep from convincing myself the test will be positive.  All my symptoms and their timeframe seem to be too much to be coincidence.  I am very scared and need insight!

I had strong Mono like symptoms at 29 and 70 days after unprotected vaginal intercourse with a Ukrainian sex worker. I had swollen tonsils, fever, and malaise for about 5 days. Both times it came on gradually, I was prescibed antibiotics, and tapered off. Has anyone heard of ARS happening twice? It has now been about 10 months since my possible exposure, and I've lost approximately 25lbs and have cramps in my calves and feet, as well as numbness in my left ring and pinky fingers with elbow pain. I tested negative with Chinese made 15 min DIY kits I ordered off the internet at 6 1/2 and 7 months (February), but from what I've read I'm conviced those are fraudulent. I only read about ARS last week and was tested for HIV on Thursday. Results are still pending, but with what I've read in the last week, I've convinced myself I'm positive and I'm scared to death. Please help!

Also in the last month I have gone from 1-2 times to 5-6 trips to the bathroom nightly to urinate. In the morning I am severly dehydrated with a sticky dry mouth. My tongue is lined with a white milky saliva that's easily washed away but my tongue remains white and only returns to it normal pick shade later in the day. I don't believe it's thrush, but I'm very cunfused with all my symptoms especially the weight loss.

Not a smoker, not a drinker. I never weighed myself as frequently as I should have. I know that last summer I was pushing 200, today I was at 170. Looking at old photos, I believe the rapid loss began in Feb/Mar.

You were told that the HOME ACCESS TEST is the only FDA approved home test there is. You do not get your result in fifteen minutes with the HOME ACCESS TEST. Yes, we read other website.

What is your purpose of pointing that out?  As I've said before I'm scared and looking desperately for answers.  So far you've only repeated what has already been stated, for a purpose that only you are aware!

I know his purpose...

His purpose is to make you understand that you were already given an answer to the same question. HIV is same illness around the world, don't expect to receive multiple/different answers about same topic/question. Plus, it is bad to your mind... so please stick to the answer you received and move on.

No, ARS doesn't happen twice. Nothing you are reporting in the way of symptoms is in any way HIV specific. But then neither the presence nor the absence of symptoms will ever tell you anything accurately about your HIV status. Only getting tested at the appropriate time, (13 weeks or more after the most recent risky incident).

Which is what you are doing. So you need to take some good deep and slow breaths and stay productively busy until you get your test result. Getting annoyed because you don't like the answers here won't help you. Your anxiety during this waiting period is understandable, but you're not doing yourself any favor to get angry at Rod.

You also need to learn from this experience. You can have all the sex you want to with anyone you want to. Just do it the safer way which means always using a condom for intercourse. No exceptions.

As for your symptoms, you should be discussing them with your doctor.

Good luck with your test result.
