Taking Atripla in the Morning
« on: April 29, 2007, 11:10:41 am »
Hi,

I have been on Atripla since Feb 16.  So far I have experienced minimal side effects - just slight dizziness and mild headache.

However, I also have sleep apnea which makes me fall asleep suddenly - sometimes forgetting to take my med (same thing happened  when I was using the CPAP - but now, I had UPPP surgery hence I no longer need the CPAP).

So I am thinking of switching to morning Atripla -- I am compliant with my blood pressure meds, so I think i can be more compliant with Atripla during the day.

I have read the experiences of a couple of people on this forum, and thought i might try, although I work during the day -- it wouldn't be fun to be drunk in front of my students.

Well, the first pill went down around 11am this morning.

I am keeping my fingers crossed, and report back here !!

rgds, DanKenny

Yeesh!  Atripla does a number on me, so I couldn't imagine it during the day and standing in front of students.  I hope it goes well, please let us know...

I am in to my second month on ATRIPLA and only spent the first 3-4 days taking it at bedtime. I could not sleep at all with it. I take mine betw 2-3pm, and am without any sleep problems.

I do get a buzzed feeling alomst exactly 2 hours after taking it. This buzz may last 30 to an hour.

My 2 cents.

Well, I survived Atripla Part II - Day1 (Day 1 of my second encounter with Atripla.

I took the tab around 10.45am.  Around 11.15, I started experiencing the buzz feelings.

It intensified slightly within the next half hour, and by 12 noon it has stablized.  I didn't really feel that dizzy.

I had a shower around 1pm, got lunch for the kids. By 2pm, I didn't really feel that dizzy, though I could still feel the effect of the drug.  So between 2 to 3pm, I drove from Philadelphia to Cherry Hill, NJ, ate early dinner with a family friend, and then just got back home.

So in all, it wasn't a bad experience.

Tomorrow morning, I will try again  -- taking it very early - 6am - on an empty stomach, get my kids ready for school around 8am, and head out of the door by 8.30am -- by the time I start teaching around 10am, i hope to be over the hunch -- but hey, I have to be on guard -- i can get surprises...

Thanks very much for your thoughts.  Good Night !!

DanK

So far, Day-2 went ok.

I took the tab around 6am, and by 8.30am, I could drive to school. I was alert throughout the day - during class and meetings..

so, I hope all goes well.

thanks again  - DannyK

I take my atripla @ 11am and have been for a few months now....which is 3 hours after breakfast and 2 hours before lunch....I have been fine....Once in a while I may get the drunk/dizzy feeling...but it usually dont last long....When I was trying to take it before bed I would be up all night for some reason. I sleep much better now.

It took me a little over a month to get over that initial dizzy/foggy feeling....I asked my doc back then about it and she was right by saying "it should become less frequent to not at all"...I rarely get that feeling any more...just once in a while...mainly when I eat a little closer to the time I take it or after I take it...Keep your head up!

Hi,

Just got off a 3 drug combo because of $ and started Atripla on Thursday...WOW! I am so in la la land it isn't even funny.  I have been on different meds for the past 10 years and have never had such side effects as I have on this one.  I know it says to give it some time for the side effects to subside and I hope they do, because I don't think I can handle this everyday.  I can't even think at work and I'm really concerned.
I thought I would try taking it in the morning to see if that works, but at this point I'm afraid I won't be able to function at all.
I took it late last night, about 1am to make sure my stomach was totally empty to see if that would work, but here I sit feeling higher than a kite.
Am I being to premature in not giving it time?..I really want this to work since it is about half the cost of the other drugs.
any advise out there.

Scott

Scott -- welcome to our forums!

One of the drugs in Atripla is Sustiva -- please read our lesson called Tips & Tricks on Taking Sustiva:

http://www.aidsmeds.com/articles/SustivaTips_7550.shtml

The effects you are feeling should subside or lesson in the days ahead, at least most of them.

Welcome Scott,
Give it some time. The first two nights were 'fun' to be honest. Been on Atripla since Aug 06, for me the 'la la' effects lessened within a week. Now, I generally get a familiar buzz within an hour. It helps me sleep and dream a bit, but all good. I kinda miss those psychedelic first two nights ... LOL

Here's a recent post in the forum about atripla.

Hope it works for you, it has for me. We're here if you need us.

Hi Peter and thanks for the welcome.

I did check the article on Sustiva, the good news is it does seem to be better this week than last, thank goodness. I do notice that I get to sleep right away and sleep good until about 3a like this morning, and then I'm not sleeping as well from then on.  I'm going to keep on though at this point, atl least for the next 3 weeks to give this a full month, then maybe think about switching the time I take it.

Anyway thanks again guys and gals for the welcome to the site..I love it!

Best wishes

Scott
