overwhelmed with fear
« on: April 27, 2007, 02:22:38 PM »
hi and thanks for reading, im a 20 year old male and i recently had unprotected sex with a 18 year old female, it was a very stupid desision made under the influence of alcohol and now im worried sick... i casually asked around about her and was told that she "gets around" alot, like ALOT ALOT, its been 17 days since the encounter and the past 2 days when i wake up my stomach is verrrry nauseas, it doesnt feel like i have to vommit or go to the bathroom, it feels really...weird and unsettled. ive never had this feeling in my stomach before, also ive noticed alittle bit of night sweats, im not sure if its just from thinking about this situation so much and its making me really nervous or if its genuine illness caused night sweats. i know the only sure way to tell is to wait 13 weeks and be tested but 13 weeks of this suspense is gonna give me gray hair and drive me absolutly insane(im a very anxious and paranoid person as it is) i spoke with a close friend about this and his opinion was that if she had HIV or aids then someone gave it to her and sooner or later somewhere down the line 1 of there partners would find out they had it and tell them and then he would tell her...but i dont really buy that,  ive read alot on here in the past couple days and im hoping someone can just give me rough odds of the virus in people my age, the chances that even if she were HIV+ i would recieve it, and signs to look out for, and anything else you think can help. thanks alot

Hi Joe,

OK, so you need to learn from this experience. Mixing heavy drinking with impulsive sex is dangerous. You can have all the sex you like with as many partners as you like. And their HIV status is irrelevant as long as you make sure to wear a latex condom everytime. No exceptions.

Now, as far as this recent incident, here are some basics. HIV is not an easy virus to transmit. It's significantly harder to accomplish from female to male. So the odds against transmission having occured during this single incident, (IF she is HIV+), are very much in your favor that it didn't happen.

But you do need to get tested to be sure because low risk is not the same as no risk. All but the smallest number of those who are going to seroconvert will do so within 4-6 weeks after an exposure to the virus. So you can test at 6 weeks after for a prelimenary result. Assuming you test negative, which I expect you will, then re-test at 13 weeks for a final all clear.

In the meantime stay productively busy and the time will pass more quickly than you can possibly imagine right now. There is absolutely nothing about your symptoms which suggests HIV to me, but then you also need to know that neither the presence nor the absence of symptoms will ever tell you anything accurately about your HIV status. Only a test taken at the right time can do that.

If your symptoms persist you should discuss them with a doctor.

I expect you will come out of this ok.

Cheers,
Andy Velez
