Annual Education today---5 hours
« on: April 23, 2007, 06:06:45 PM »
Had to do my annual in service at work today...

I had to go into work at noon today. Once a year we have to attend this. It started off today, with getting my TB test. The nurse on my shift, will read that Wednesday night.

Today covered the following topics:

Risk management---(who, what, when, where, why, and how Incident reporting)  Federal/state regulation--/neglect / exploitation (Definition-contact-protocol-castastrophic event reporting)

Safety--fire--life safety---customer service

Infection Control /Prevention---Standard precautions...

HIV/Aids training ( one hour) --- (content--mode of transmission--clinical management--with prevention and attitude change. New employees Florida Law--confidentiality and treatment--partner notification) Blood borne pathogens---Hepatitis, and TB

Biomedical Waste (segregation-labeling-handling-storage )

CPR skills---Heimlich maneuver ( This is now mandatory )

And starting this year, I had to do one hour of Alzheimer training. This is for all employees that have direct contact with the residents---Communication with cognitively impaired residents.

And of course all the OSHA and HIPPA ... And we talked about the necessary steps to be taken for the upcoming hurricane season.

hi Ray,

you say that you "have" to take those classes. Is your work related to health care? I work for one of the biggest companies in the US and they never mentionned such classes (they would be interesting I think).

As a nurse, an RNA, a QMA, or a CNA, it is mandatory (at least in Indiana, I'm sure other states have similar laws) that your employer must offer you at least 12 hours of inservice education per year, you're not obligated under law to take it though.

Some facilities make it their policy that inservice is mandatory, and even if it's not, why turn down 12 hours of overtime?

I'm trying to convince the people I work with at Wal-Mart to take the CNA course at Ivy Tech, next month I'll be done with it, and I can leave a job that barely pays more than minimum wage and replace it with a career that pays more than double.

It's not something for everyone, but I'm sick of all these dead end jobs that smack you around and treat you worse than dirt.

We have 450 residents, where I work . It is a combination nursing home, assisted living and independent living facility.
I am not a CNA or nurse, But I am in contact with the residents, on a daily basis, and do a bit of clerical work for Human resources, finance dept,  and culinary services.I am also responsible on my shift, that I keep updated  the computer, on the whereabouts of all residents, whether they are hospitalized, in rehab, vacation, or transferred, to different facilities. The average age of our residents is 83.
