"This study builds on previous research showing selenium's potential role as an antioxidant in immune health and the possible consequences of selenium deficiency in people living with HIV/AIDS," said Barry Hurwitz, PhD, Professor of Psychology and Medicine at the University of Miami and lead investigator of the study. "The results support the use of high selenium yeast as an inexpensive, safe nutritional therapy in HIV spectrum disease."

Yup - this news was on the wires in January. Basically you need to be taking 200 micrograms daily of a decent quality supplement. The researchers used Selenomaxx.

Here's another link to the aidsmap article on this:

Just keep in mind everybody, that you don't have to buy the Selenomax brand, any Selenium supplement will do. While the study was legitimate, the press release touting the brand Selenomax was put out by, who else, Nutrition 21 Inc., the manufacturing company. Personally, I buy the inexpensive brands from either Walmart or Publix, my local supermarket.

I'm not so sure about that - they said that they used Selenomax because it was most likely to have a higher bioavailability than other brands - something in the way it's manufactured. Even with this, only 50 out of 91 people were classed as "responders".

I don't take Selenomax, because I cannot be arsed to order it over the internet, but I'm thinking about it. I take ImmuneAce from Vitabiotics, when I remember!

I wonder if my HIV clinic could test my Selenium levels to see if I am a responder or not - because it would save me quite a bit of money if I am not.

Problems is that, if I recall correctly, there was some type of business association between the researchers and the company that made Selenomax. I mean think about this, when was the last time we read in a report about a clinical trial that they used a specific , third party, commercial over-the-counter product, and then went out of their way to mention how much better that product was over others? No, something ain't right about that picture. Selenium is Selenium...

I've been taking Selenomax for a couple of months now, haven't had bloods done yet and no real way of knowing if it helps or now.  My regular multis have selenium, but I thought it was the 'yeast-based' that made these better, but I'm certainly not a selenium expert.  Any research or studies on those brasilian nuts?

I am not a scientist either, so I don't know about this 'yeast-derived' issue....for all I know it may not make a difference if the selenium comes from yeast or not, or maybe most companies use yeast as well, but don't tout it, who knows...all I know is I am skeptical when a manufacturer says "our product is better than the others!".

I did find the following, from doing a search, http://www.berkeleywellness.com/html/ds/dsSelenium.php

Good sources of selenium:

SELENIUM SOURCE                      (MICROGRAMS)*

Brazil nuts (3-4, 1/2 oz)**                      272

Tuna, light, canned in water (3 oz)          68

Flounder or sole, cooked (3 oz)               50

Sardines, Atlantic, canned in oil (3 oz)      45

Halibut, cooked (3 oz)                            40

Spaghetti, whole-wheat, cooked (1 cup)  36

Salmon, sockeye, cooked (3 oz)              32

Turkey, roasted (3 oz)                            31

Cream of Wheat, cooked (1 cup)             31

Beef, cooked (3 oz)                               30

Salmon, pink, canned (3 oz)                    28

Ground turkey (3 oz)                             32

Macaroni, enriched, cooked (1 cup)         30

Sunflower seeds, dry roasted (1 oz)         23

Chicken, cooked (3 oz)                          21

Cottage cheese, 1% (1 cup)                  20

Brown rice, long-grain, cooked (1 cup)     19

Oats, cooked (1 cup)                            19

Special K cereal (1 cup)                          17

Egg (1 large)                                        16

Whole-wheat bread (1 slice)                   10

* Average values (values vary, depending on where the plant grew or what the animal ate).

** Limit Brazil nuts to two a day to avoid getting too much selenium.

CONCLUSIONS: Daily selenium supplementation can suppress the progression of HIV-1 viral burden and provide indirect improvement of CD4 count. The results support the use of selenium as a simple, inexpensive, and safe adjunct therapy in HIV spectrum disease. Trial Registration isrctn.org Identifier: ISRCTN22553118.

Help.  Please
