HIV-2: Fact or Myth?
« on: April 19, 2007, 07:05:00 AM »
When I first tested positive, the doctor I saw wanted to run a genotype (I guess that's the right word for it) to test my virus in order to see if I was resistant to any medication. Fortunately, I was not. However, he mentioned that the reason he wanted to do this was because a new strain of HIV had cropped up in San Francisco that they (the medical "they") were dubbing HIV-2, and it was highly resistant to all current forms of medication. He also said it was quite aggressive.

I've read in the forums here little tid-bits here and there where someone will mention it. Usually they're using HIV-2 and superinfection interchangeably, but anywho...

Basically, is there such a strain as HIV-2? Not superinfection, but an actual new strain of HIV.

*Edited for a gastly mistake of using "their" instead of "there"  ;D

Hi Molten,

Hiv-2 has nothing to do with superinfection. Hiv-2 is a strain of hiv that is mainly found in West Africa and those European countries who are host to many West African immigrants. Those people with hiv-2 infection seem to progress slower, although I believe the meds are less effective, when they do become needed. It also seems to be even harder to transmit than hiv-1, and they think this is why it is less prevalent than hiv-1 world-wide.

Google hiv-2 and you'll find plenty of information.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

As usual, Ann is spot-on. I found this account on Avert quite useful: Linky. It explains the different types and subtypes, their relations and differences. There's also a cute little picture on subtype genealogy. :)
