I hate microwaves - everything they do tastes horrible.

And you don't need one to eat well. The best piece of kit in my kitchen is a makeshift steamer - a colander and a pan full of water. I steam my veggies and grill some chicken. Throw in some nuts and some carbs (I like cous cous or organic brown rice) if you fancy it and it's the perfect meal. Everything an HIV+ person needs...

I've turned down offers from friends of a free microwave.

reheat stuff? yeah... maybe.

cook? definitely not!

not much help here I guess but you could do something else with the money you'll save by NOT buying one ;)

Yeah,

Cooking with a microwave is tricky. I just use it to reheat, which I think is what it was invented for. You can throw in the sponges you use to clean the kitchen up or the kitchen rags and heat them up to kill the bacteria without chemicals. Be carefull when you are taking them out because they will get hot. And put them in there wet. It is also a good way to clean the microwave if you use tongs to scrub the inside with a hot steamy towel.

I use mine to:
reheat coffee
reheat leftovers from the fridge
kill bacteria on sponges
defrost stuff
not suitable to prepare whole meals as promoted in advertisements. I am a big fan of meat; not a vegetarian. Doesn't sear and brown meats as I like. Seems like it would be good for veggie cooking but since I am already using the stove/oven to prepare the other components of my meals, I never use the microwave for cooking.
A small unit (wide enough for a plate) would suffice, for most tasks.

If you do decide to buy one I'd recommend buying a lower powered unit.  The ones that are over 1000 watts tend to destroy things and make a big mess.  The lower powered units gently reheat items without making them "explode".

NO WAY! microwaves work by exciting water molecules in food. Guess what most vegetables contain a lot of? water. If you cook veggies in a microwave it breaks the cell structure and hence the firmness and texture of the vegetable.

Take it from a vegetarian: no one likes a limp carrot ::) ;D

A microwave is good for a lot of things including:

-- Making Popcorn
-- Defrosting
-- Reheating leftovers
-- Boiling water quickly
-- melting chocolate

Frankly, I used to think I didn't one and now couldn't live without it.  The key to cooking with a microwave is to understand how it works and then adjust the recipes accordingly.

Microwave cookery is loathsome.

Microwave reheatery and defrostery is incredibly useful and a time saver.

Don't get the cheapest one, either... it'll break down quickly.  Spend a little extra, and the damn thing will last you.

Oh, and don't put a whole egg in one.  It's true what they say about them exploding.  I was curious.

Your tastebuds can't repel flavor of this magnitude!

I have a microwave mounted above my stove-it also has a convection oven and a regular oven setting. I love it! It saves electricity when making small items or single meals because you don't need to heat up the bigger oven.  It wasn't cheap but I have gotten my moneys worth out of it.

I like to put the milk on shredded wheat, then pop it into the microwave til the milk is just warm. If you like the shredded wheat crunchy-don't do this.

I love my microwave to reheat certain leftovers, heat up a quick cup of milk for hot chocolate, and of course for popcorn.  I also use it to soften butter if I am cooking something and to heat up water for various things.  Other than that, actually cooking in it .... not all that great.  Buy a cheap little one from Target they are 50 bucks I think .... that is all you really need.
The difference between an overnight and a layover is luck!

Very truth but must watch microwave very close..  Sometime dog blow up is settings on the too high range.  Make big mess and too dirty to eat meat from exploded guts and wastes.

Convection oven safer for overcooking due to guts not exploding out.

If you are looking for some quick and delicious recipes and don't have a microwave I think I can help you out. Here's one that is quck and easy:

Steamed Babies:

Ingredients:
10 small, premature born babies
4 cups old bay
3 gallons water
1 gallon vinegar

Bring water, vinegar, and old bay mixture to boil in large cauldron. Add babies and steam until skin is bright and crisp. Enjoy with either skin on or off.
