Margaritas with an Atripla Chaser
« on: April 02, 2007, 05:45:23 PM »
I rarely ever drink.  But want to get a good buzz tonight as visiting friends in hometown.  Anyone have any stories/side effects from drinking on atripla?  I took it now so I have a few hours before I drink so hopefully that will help.  But I want to let my hair down now and then and have some fun!  Thanks for any info...Joe

I have found that there is a fine line between living safe or "clean living" and living well or "letting your hair down" as you suggest.  I tend to fall on the side of caution more often than not,  but if it weren't for the occasional few beers once a month or so i would probably lose my mind!  Stress begs me to get together with my friends and blow off steam every so often,  though i usually pay a price if i do overindulge.  I guess what i am saying is that before my diagnosis and meds,  i would have 10-12 beers on a night out (weekend only i don't drink period during the week) while post diagnosis/meds that number is more like 6-8 and its not every weekend but more like once a month.  But its a good way to blow out the week of work,  deadlines,  stress,  etc.  And its fun as hell.

That said,  I'm not a doctor,  so read as much as you can about your meds.  Read the alcohol warnings,  talk to your doc,  etc.  I'm hoping he tests your liver along with all of your usual labs.  As for the effectiveness of meds with some drinks,  its been my experience that the meds are working fine.  But moderation,  along with adherence,  is KEY.

I know my regimen says not to have more than 3 drinks per day,  or something to that effect.  Well,  i could say i don't drink for 14 days so does that mean on the 14th day i can go completely crazy on a binder and binge drink?  The logical answer is probably not.  As several folks here have said,  listen to your body and it will tell you after the fact if this is a good idea or not.  But i would strongly encourage moderation in doing so,  you can still have fun if you keep it to a minimum.  And please ask your doc for his/her opinion.

Cheers   8)

Got friggin BOMBED on Saturday night for the wife's 30th.  Took some B-12 the early in the evening and had NO ill effects whatsoever.

Choosing your "poison" carefully seems a good idea to me.  If you get really sick from drinking bourbon.....then dont. If margaritas send you to the porcelain god, dont. I find a clear liquor, is best for me.  One that's top shelf...SKY, STOLIE, FINLANDIA, GREY GOOSE, ABSOLUTE or something like that. I dont mind a gin martini but prefer vodka. I buy a bottle and it lasts a month (usually). lol
