Public Caffienation Service Announcement
« on: March 09, 2007, 07:19:32 PM »
I don't know about you, but at least five or six times a week, people come up to me and say to  me, "Benj... I love coffee, but the stuff I make at home tastes like rotgut, and I have to take out a small loan for that over-roasted crap Starbucks calls coffee."

No, really.  They do it.  I promise.

Well, I have discovered what is quite possibly the cheapest way to make uber-delicious coffee in your home.

A French press.  Get one.  They're also known as coffee plungers. press pots, or cafetières.

Just get one.

You won't regret it.

Oh, and to anyone with lipid issues, the lack of a filter means that drinking a lot of coffee brewed in a press increases your LDL levels.  Which is bad... and sort of takes the wind out of my sails... but I feel sort of obligated to point it out.

You can make tea in them, too.  Delicious, delicious tea.

Coffee is bad for lipid levels? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAhhhhhh, I am going to die. I love coiffee. It is the only thing that gives this AIDS ravaged body energie. I am bad, and have 4 cups of potent, hair on your chest growing, brew every morning.

Merde encore!

Baby-Benj! Coffee Plungers? My giddy aunt! I thought those horrid things went out in the 1990's along with HyperColour T-Shirts.

Like most Australians, Matty the Damned is a fuss-pot tea drinker. If he drinks coffee it has to be made with an espresso machine. Nothing else will do. One piece of advice, if you use your plunger (oh god GAG) for coffee, don't use them for tea.

It taints the flavour. And we simply can't have that.

And Rob, coffee made the normal drip way, with filters and all that... doesn't increase LDL levels.

Like ewwwww, I hate coffee. The only time I drank it was when I was pregnant, for some reason I craved it. I use to drink tea all the time especially sun tea. But being diabetic has taken away all the simple pleasures.. :(

They're brilliant, Matty!  Why don't you like them?

Oh sweet-thang! Where does one begin? Matty the Damned can remember a time when coffee plungers were considered to be like totally Teh Shit. No office tea-room or lower middle class kitchen was without a ridiculously over priced Bodum.

It was the height of fashion to drink luke warm cups of retch inducing off-white muck with bits of coffee floating in them.

Excuse me, I think I'm gonna puke.

Luke warm?

LUKE WARM?

No!  What did they do to the poor coffee?

Boiling water only!  It has to be boiling... that's the point of a press!  The hotter the water, the more oils and flavor you actually get from the beans.

Benj,

Whilst a plunger is infinitely better than the usual American brew which is barely drinkable at the best of times, I'm with Dasch and grind my own beans each morning for use in an Alessi stove top espresso unit. mmmmm. now, that's coffee.

The world as I know it just ended.....  I agree with Matty

As a Philips shareholder I really should plug the Senseo but, I just can't do it.  Grind the beans fresh and go for the espresso unit.

Trouble is with the senseo, they're just so anti climactic..seems an easy process, its quick, smells good and then....the pods are just HORRIBLE, bit too thin a brew for me, and I've tried em all, and in multiples  ;D

I'm a coffee bitch (and other types of bitch but that's for another thread), and I have 2 plungers, a huge one good for 12 cups that I use for the morning, and a small one for after dinner.

Now you should see my face when I realize I forgot to buy coffee and I have to get out and get a sip of the marvelous 7/11 brew that just allows me to open the second eye so I can drive to the shop buy real coffee  :-\

I love coffee (hence my screen name) and I think the massive amounts of Starbucks gift cards I get every Christmas has helped my addiction to Starbucks.  My coffee at home doesn't taste the same and many gas stations have watered down crap (I like my coffee hot, strong, and black--like my men).  I am wondering if one of those expensive coffee pots is worth it.  Does anyone know if those are good investments and any better than the cheaper ones?  Though I've never tried a French press, might have to try that one as well.

Oh yeah!

Coffee makes me have to make poo.

I can see that... meet for coffee... go back to his place... and then the next thing the neighbors hear is, "I'm so fucking sorry!"

Funny mental image.

Starbucks' coffee is an abomination.  I'd rather drink water from a toilet.

The only kind of coffee is coffee and chicory, CDM or French Market brands.  French Market is the best but it's more expensive.  A good cup of coffee that doesn't have the consistency or taste of watered down iced tea like Starbucks.   It's hard to find in many places but a gourmet coffee shop should have some.

Everytime I go to Italy, which is quite often, I bring home a little Bialetti coffee maker.  You know, those that the water boils on the lower part of the cofee-maker, then goes through the aluminum filter and up to be served.  I like the sound of it, the smell and the shape, of course.
And, most importantly, I like my coffee to be very strong.  The Bialetti coffee-makers, in this sense,  are just perfect!

The last time I was in Rome, though, I noticed something that really puzzled me.  I usually ask for a "Caffè lungo/Espresso lungo" 'cause even this way all you get are some drops of coffee in a cup,  in Rome.
Out of curiosity, though, I did ask for a normal  "Espresso ristretto".  No comments.  It was a little mouthful, sip or gulp of coffee that I had!

ewww... chicory

How can you ewww chicory when it has so many health benefits?  I'd probably be dead by now if I didn't drink so much!

totally objective commercial website of Chicory SA Limited - South Africa

Here is a sampling of the invaluable information on the site:
Quote
Chicory is prebiotic (it helps cleanse the body of toxins and aids in the removal of harmful bacteria in the digestive system).

It also has a soothing effect on the nervous system.

Suitable for diabetics.

Kosher Status: PAREV (exciting news for many!)

LOWERS CHOLESTEROL:
A new study* reports that chicory reduces cholesterol levels and increases the ratio of HDL (the good one) to LDL (the bad one) in the blood of tested animals.

* Journal of Nutrition, vol. 128, pgs. 1731-a6, by Drs. Meehye Kim & hyun Kyong Shin, Korea Food & Drug Administration and the Department of Food Science and Nutrition, Hallym U., Chunchon, Korea.

LOWERS BLOOD SUGAR:
Laboratory reasearch undertaken in Europe shows chicory root extracts to be anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and slightly sedative. It slows the pulse and lowers blood sugar.

THERAPEUTIC FOR DIABETES:
A study** done in 1984 demonstrated that daily intake by diabetics of a large amount of the fructo-oligosaccharides and inulin contained in chicory:
Reduces the glucose rate in blood.
Decreases serum LDL cholesterol levels.
Does not change the levels of triglycerides or HDL cholesterol.

This lessens the disturbances in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism found in diabetes.

** Effect of fructo oligosaccharides on blood glucose and serum lipids in diabetic subjects, Nutrition Research, 1984, vol. 4, pp. 961-66, , by Yamashita Y, Kawai K and Itakura M.

ASSISTS IN WEIGHT LOSS & STIMULATES THE IMMUNE SYSTEM:
Chicory contains two ingredients that can contribute to a weight loss programme. A report in the July 1999 Journal of Nutrition*** reveals that these ingredients (inulin and oligofructose) are not digestible by our bodies, and thus have no calories. Nevertheless, the inulin and oligofructose in chicory are digested by beneficial microbes in the colon and aid “in the treatment of, prevention or alleviation of symptoms of intestinal diseases.” These ingredients also participate in the feeding of beneficial bacteria (similar to yoghurt) and allow them to compete with and defeat harmful bacteria, stimulate our immune system and indirectly help promote our own production of B vitamins.

***(supplement) Journal of Nutrition, July 1999, by Dr. Marcel B. Roberfroid and associates, Catholic U. of Lovain, Dept. of Pharmaceutical Science, Brussels,
