Title: A Telegraph Hill walk?
Post by: allanq on August 01, 2007, 12:31:31 pm
Last weekend, I had some friends visiting from Pittsburgh, PA, and I took them on a walk up Telegraph Hill to Coit Tower. This is my favorite walk in San Francisco. It has beautiful views and goes through one of the most charming and unusual areas of San Francisco. You may have heard of the movie "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill." This is where they hang out.

I was wondering if there is any interest in doing this walk on Monday morning around 10:30 am.

This walk involves hill climbing. We would meet at the Ferry Building and walk along the waterfront to the starting point, Levi Strauss Plaza. You climb about 300 feet in a series of steps (the Filbert Stairs) to Coit Tower, where there are great views of the city and San Francisco Bay. There are also some wonderful murals inside Coit Tower that were painted as part of the WPA project in 1935.

The walk continues downhill to North Beach, which still retains much of its Italian heritage (despite an ever-expanding Chinatown). This is a good place to stop for lunch. Depending on how everyone feels, we could continue after lunch to Russian Hill and Nob Hill, ending at Grace Cathedral. From there, it's a pretty easy downhill walk to the hotel.

Is anyone interested in this walk? I know quite a few people will be leaving on Monday and would not be able to do it, but I was wondering if anyone who's leaving on Tuesday or very late on Monday would be interested. Not looking for a commitment, just want some idea if there is any interest.

If you want to get a preview of some of the views, type in "Coit Tower, San Francisco" in Google Earth. If you click on the little blue dots, you can see photos of various sights along the route.

If people let me know on the day before, on Sunday, that would be fine. I just wanted to put this out there as a possibility.

I'm sure some people have their own ideas of how to spend their last day in San Francisco. I have to remember that it's not possible to see and do everything in a visit that lasts just a few days.

I would be interested in doing this, but I don't know if I will have time on Monday or not...

Dan,

With a stopover for lunch, the walk would probably end at around 3 pm. Add another 20 or 30 minutes to get back to the hotel.

I've done the walk before, but unless there are other things scheduled at the same time i'd be happy to join you.

I'm not a climber, i lose breath fast on leg work, so go slow!

Milker.

Most of the uphill part of the walk is by stairs, which I find easier than just a steep uphill street. I have neuropathy and am one of the older members of this forum, so this walk would definitely be at a very leisurely pace.
