You know the whole subject is so bizarre to me.

A.  People don't see that being against CIVIL marriage for same-sex couples is plain and simple discrimination

B.  People get OFFENDED when someone points this out.

C.  This has nothing to do with religious marriage -- no one is going to make the Catholic church (or any other) marry anyone.

True story --- during my short visit home this week, I was at my father's house.  Somehow the subject of same-sex marriage came up and my step-mother asks me the following question:
"What do you think would happen if everyone married someone of the same-sex?"  After I picked my chin up from the floor, I told her that this was a stupid question, because "everyone" wouldn't be marrying someone of the same-sex just because it was allowed.  She replied by say, "but what if........"  I said that it still was a stupid question because it wouldn't happen.  I then when on to ask her if she felt that Sid and I, after almost 19 years together, didn't deserve the exact same rights and responsibilities as my older brother or my step brother and their wives??  She then changed the subject.
It amazes me that someone who, I believe, genuinely cares for me and Sid could not see the absurdity in "outlawing" same-sex marriage.  Quite disheartening.

We'll have to see if she accepts the likely invitation to our wedding next year (they live in RI).  Sid and I plan to get married next year -- on our 20th anniversary.  His family is in Mass, mine is in RI, so we should be able to get both families together easily -- if they agree to come.

Many people don't make a distinction between civil marriage and religious marriage. For some people it is just "marriage."

Bizarre to me too Mike.

1.  The woman is a beauty queen.

2.  Rational and intelligent thoughts are neither encouraged nor sought after in her profession.

3.  She lost the pageant, some other girl is Miss USA, her career is pretty much over.

There must be something they put in their hair which sucks out normal intelligence.   ;D  Have the best day

bocker3,
The odd rationale your mom uses is common enough. A pity, however.
It seems to me it's all about fear of the unknown.
The majority of straight folks have this fear that 8% to 10% of the populous will somehow take over.
It's almost like we gays will somehow ruin the sacred cow 'marriage'.
And...it's almost like they don't realize we all came out of vaginas and are just programmed a bit different. No big deal. You know, if straights want less gays (who are somehow a big threat) in the populous they will just have to stop production as can't recall ever recruiting anyone.

Miss USA : May contestants speak what they think is the politically correct.

I think the whole thing is overblown and she contributed to her own problems, by not listening to the question that was asked of her.  Instead, she gave her opinion of same sex marriage, and the rest, they say, is history.  It did not take long for the GOP to swoop her up and I expect she will now become the female to Joe the Plumber, regarding gay marriage.  Who cares.  She's just another one bleating the same old tired mantra of "we must protect traditional marriage", so that Brittany Spears 55 hour marriage to Kevin would not be viewed negatively.  Granted it did not last long, but at least theirs was an "opposite" marriage.  Again, who cares.

The real issue I see with same sex marriage, is the same issue my parents had with my being gay.  The fact that we demand equal rights, can be very threatening to people, both personally and spiritually.  Gays have been demonized for eons and many religions have been prominent in their persecution of gays, and if you share those religious beliefs, how do you reconcile that some of your beliefs, go against the beliefs of present day society?  Further, the fact that many people cannot differentiate between religious and civil marriage, only compounds the problem, because when they hear gay marriage, they envision the feds storming their church, so Bob and Jake can get married.

I believe that what we should continue what we are doing, concerning gay marriage, and that is trying to change perceptions, one person at a time.  Personally, I will not give Ms California another thought, because, while I admire her for standing by her convictions, I believe she is allowing herself to be manipulated and that eventually she will go the way of Anita Bryant, as the tide continues to wash her kind, back out to sea.

Gay marriage is frightening to many people, because it provides a convenient way to demonize a whole community, rather than accepting, as with slavery or woman's right to vote, that they were wrong.  Plain and simple.  And if they and their religions, are wrong about this issue, what other issues are they wrong about?  To some people, that simple fact, is absolutely terrifying, but that is their problem and I refuse to make it mine.

Personally, I listened to not-Miss USA's original statements on CNN and didn't really understand what she was trying to say. She was very inarticulate in her answer to Perez Hilton's question, and it didn't make much sense. I was somewhat surprised about some people in the news media trying to equate her position on the issue with that of president Obama.
At the very least, this new development clearly indicates where she stands - in the camp of the bigots. She is certainly entitled to her opinion. I'm not sure that she is going to change a lot of minds on this subject.

Miss USA paid for her boob job.  (thought you should know)
Should've given her a scholarship to higher education. Geez.

These candidates should have to pass a stupid test as part of the process.  All the beautiful intelligent women, couldn't both be celebrated?  Some are no doubt pretty damn clever. I have seen some very articulate Miss France's on French TV.  In fact, I don't think you could get to be Miss France if you were communicationally handicapped.

I would have said she was entrapped by cynical liberal TV people with that question, but then she went and followed it up with more stupidity.

I agree, the one image that was posted was not very convincing.

However, she might lose her crown for another reason :

http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_12300858?source=most_viewed

"Pageant officials Tuesday said they are looking into whether Prejean violated her contract by working with a national group opposed to gay marriage and by posing semi-nude when she was a 17-year-old model."

...

"The contract prohibits Miss California from making personal appearances, giving interviews or making commercials without permission from pageant officials. In the last 10 days, Prejean has made televised appearances at her San Diego church and on behalf of the National Organization for Marriage, a group opposed to same-sex marriage."

Carrie Prejean -- The Origin of Homophobia
Posted May 7th 2009 12:37PM by TMZ Staff

So how does a beauty queen turn into the poster child against gay marriage? In the case of Miss California Carrie Prejean, the answer may lie in an ugly divorce that may have cemented her views on gay relationships.

Carrie's parents filed for divorce in 1988 and the divorce and custody fights went on for more than a decade -- it was a divorce filled with homosexual allegations hurled by both sides.

In one of the docs, Carrie's dad describes a confrontation he had with her mom in 1996, in which he recounts an argument in a restaurant parking lot, where "Ms. Prejean accused me, in front of our daughter, of homosexuality."

The papers also quote a court-appointed doctor who said "The mother questioned [within hearing of the girls] whether [her father] was a homosexual or had a homosexual roommate."

Carrie's mom says the "gay" allegations went both ways. In court papers dated May 16, 2000, a report from the court-appointed counselor says "The mother also alleges the father told the girls their stepfather was gay, that all men with mustaches are gay." The father's response: "The father acknowledges talking with the girls about the stepfather's brother being gay, not the stepfather."

Also in the docs -- a handwritten letter from Carrie's older sister, in which she recounts a weekend stay with her dad: "One time my sister & I went in the hallway of my dad's apartment, & his roommate's door was open all the way & we saw [the roommate] in bed with another man. I don't think it's right for my sister & I to have to live that way."

So does Carrie believe gays broke up her parents' marriage? We called her rep ... no comment so far. We could not reach Carrie's dad for comment.

For the record, there are other allegations -- absolutely hideous -- in the divorce and custody papers -- which we have elected not to publish.

I think she is trying anything she can to enhance her career , weather it be an actress, an activist, or maybe even running for the GOP ticket, anything will do, too bad she choose the campaign against gay marriage to do so, she may live to Regret this choice later on in life, and it may NOT enhance her future career plans at all, she would have done a lot better coming out as a Gay Woman, even if it wasn't ture  ???

Well, she has just been fired, for contract violations - not appearing at Miss California events, while making other unsanctioned appearances.
The Miss California title now goes to Tami Farrell.

No problem; I just wonder who's gonna throw that fruit pie at her?

I think the more extreme people get, the more foolish and ridiculous they look.  I'd much rather have a ranting right-winger than a quite, patient one.  Also, the fact that her being Miss California was 'upheld' initially, and that her current violations can / are / should be documented make it pretty clear why she was 'de-throned'.

I also thought it was funny how the right-wingers tried to equate her views with Obama's; but then, they're also trying to make Nancy Pelosi the scapegoat in EIT (enhanced interrogation techniques)

Ah...again I caution..don't underestimate right wingers.  :o
Well adjusted people go around with their happy lives. Right wingers focus theirs around destroying others. How do we even compete with these groups of haters?  >:(

Most did not expect to lose the anti- Prop 8 ruling in California but we did. Just when you don't expect it, they will sneak one up. It's time consuming and draining , but to stay safe, we need to be always vigilant against any blooming idiot, no matter how many crowns they like to wear.  :D

....and....errr...oh yes... world peace everyone!.. ;) :D :-*

PS: When she was asked about what she thought about same sex marriage, she should have answered:

"There is no such thing as same-sex marriage, because after marriage, sex is never the same."* :D

But alas, we all know she ain't no gifted like Miss Tyler. :P

*Quote:~Robin Tyler is one of the original plaintiffs in the California Supreme Court lawsuit Tyler v. County of Los Angeles.

Most likely, she'll be caught with her face in hair pie.  It seems like those conservatives and religious right-wingers end up getting caught in the most compromising situations... the same situations they've been bitching about and campaigning against for years!

Somehow I missed the pie in the face incident. Thanks for posting it. Kind of embarrassing all the way around.

3.  She lost the pageant, some other girl is Miss USA, her career is pretty much over.

And she's just been fired as Miss California:

I moved to Waikiki Beach and worked in advertising for years in Honolulu.  One year, I joined a tanning salon in Honolulu and Miss America, Carolyn Sapp was also a member.  We never met.

Miss Sapp did get an acting job which started two days after her Miss America reign was over.  The movie was about her and her running back boyfriend.  The director said, she wasn't any better than anyone else in the TV movie but they could use actual pageant footage and that was the clincher.

The career prospects for former beauty queens are not very bright  ;D  Have the best day
