Sinusitis from Meds?
« on: March 07, 2010, 07:55:12 pm »
Has ANYONE ever had Sinusitis after starting meds.  I dont recall ever having a sinus issue in the past.  I doubt that it could be the medication.  Norvir, Reyataz and Truvada and Atovaquone (Mepron) for PCP prevention....

About 2 days ago my left nostril became blocked.  I blew my nose and saw that it was very light liquid mucous, yellow in color, not thick, very sticky, I got it on my hand when I blew my nose, it's almost sticky like glue.  Sorry to get descriptive.  And the stench is horrible!!! It smells like freaking death!!!  I've never had this problem before, I'm more so bothered by the horrible smell, and sometimes out of nowhere it will start draining without me even blowing my nose so I'm a bit puzzled.

I got a Neti Pot kind of kit to irrigate my nose but now I feel a bit of pain on that side of my nose, around my eye and nose bridge.  Scale 1-10 a 2 so it's very very minimal.  I was just wondering if anyone has had this problem and could it be a result of the meds???

Thanks Guys!

It's probably just due to weather change or allergies.  I don't know that I would blame the meds for that.

We are always looking where to place the blame lol.  I think most ppl once they start on ARV's immediately think it's meds related hahaha.  I'm just wondering to see what kind of responses I get and see if anyone experienced this before... We'll see  :)

HAHAHAH Too Funny!!!!  It could be.  It depends if it was after you took your meds or before.  If before we can def rule out the meds.  If after, it was def the meds!!! No Doubt!!!

Interesting.

I too have had a flare up of sinus issues within the last year (been on meds just over a year). Just a few months ago they flared up pretty bad with stuffy nose, headache, snot, difficulty breathing and then progressed into a nasty chest infection, doc put me on Bactrim for a couple weeks.

It's funny you mention the "smell". The smell is disgusting and I was getting it every week or so. I tried explaining it to my doc as a "bad feet" smell. As a matter of fact I thought it WAS my feet smelling, but it wasnt it was in my nose. Doc just stared at me and said she has never heard of having a "weird smell" in the nose. It was quite frustrating as it would come and go and nothing I did would get rid of it, at times I wanted to cut my nose off, it was making me crazy.

Anyways, I finally figured out that the smell would precede the sinus issues so I bought a Netti Pot and started rinsing the nasal cavities every other day. Since then I have not had the nasty smell and have had less sinus issues and when I do they are minor. For me, the Netti Pot is a life saver. I've never had any pain after using the Netti so Im not sure where you are getting that. Perhaps you do have an active infection which is causing the pain. I would suggest seeing your doc and see hat they say ( maybe get a round of antibiotics to clear it up) and then start fresh again with the Netti. Also besure you clean the Netti Thoroughly after each use as you dont want to re-introduce bacteria each time you use it.

Also you might consider starting a daily antihistimine such as zyrtec, this has helped me somewhat as well. FYI, you can get the Walgreens equivalent of Zyrtec for half the price of Zyrtec Brand.

Not sure if its the meds or the virus, but something is going on because like you I never had ongoing sinus issues previously.

-Will

Netti Pot's are gross.

Not as gross as the horrid smell I used to get in my nose. I couldnt even stand to be around myself.

Netti pots are addicting to me. Matter of fact Im jonesin for a good flushing right now :) but this might be due to my nasal fixation I aquired from my heavy coke habit several year back. Dunno.

Well it could be related to immune reconstitution syndrome, no?

I don't know if it could actually be IRIS.  So far what I've read on the topic doesnt indicate that there could be a sinus issue with Immune reconstitution syndrome....  I will have to read more on it.

Don't read too much, thats my feeling for you. Get these things treated by your generalist. There are ways to treat sinus infections or blocked sinuses - so if its IRIS it will pass and you still get symptom relief. Or you might just have a real sinus infection and need antibiotics. Don't self diagnose.

Ohhh yes, defintely I wont self diagnose.  I'm just educating myself about the virus and want to learn as much as I can about it.  Started reading books about the history of the virus.  So just reading on IRIS is something that I will now be familiar with, but will def talk to my dr.

So I'm back again!  I will call tomorrow first thing in the morning to book an appt with my Dr.  It's progressively getting worse since Friday.  Guys, I'm so frustrated!!! I've never dealt with this before!!!  It's driving me insane.  The smell is the smell is vile, horrid, disgusting, rotten!!!  I feel pressure on the left side of my face and a bit of pain on my cheek so I'm almost positive it's a Sinus Infection!!!  I just can't stand it!!!  I have a Sweet SoneySuckle Yankee Candle next to me, the only way for me to smell that fragrance is to get so close to the candle it almost burns my nose.... and some of you know how yankee candles are very fragrant!!!  I will keep you guys posted!!!!

I've had sinus infections since I started meds back in 1996.  Don't recall having them that much before.
I was living on antibiotics, the sinus infection would go away, and then come back.  Think it had something to do with my work environment as well which was very dusty.

Now retired I don't get them as often as long as I keep my nose irrigated with the Netti Pot, or saline solution.  And take Zyrtec or the such.  I have seen my Ear, Nose, Throat doctor a few times, and he has done patch testing for allergies, no positive results, taken CT scans.  My nose is messed up deviated septum, have a polyp, nothing life threatening, but he says I am a candidate for surgery.  As long as I can live with it and it doesn't cause me pain or discomfort, I'm trying to avoid surgery.

Have you seen an Ear, Nose, Throat doctor.  Sounds like you may need a round of antibiotics.  I, like you, prefer the natural approach and the netti pot and saline soaks are a god send.

Can't help you with the smell problem.  Sometimes with my sinus infections my sense of smell is off.

Hope this helps.

Take Care,

JM

Guys, I'm so frustrated!!! I've never dealt with this before!!!

Quick thought...does sinusitis (sinus infections) run in your family? It could be hereditary. My mom fought them all through her 40s. Now that I'm that age, I'm facing the same thing. My doc prescribed azithromycin (Zithromax), an enormous bottle of which I keep with all the rest of my drugs. Sinusitis can be either viral or bacterial. Viral infections usually clear up on their own in less than a week. If my symptoms last longer than that, then I take one 500mg azithromycin per day for five days.

Or has something changed environmentally in your house or office? Have you moved recently? When I changed jobs and quit all that international travel, my frequency of infections went down.

Even since I became HIV poz (10yrs now), I've noticed I've had more sinus problems. It's most likely not the meds but just the HIV. Remember our immune systems are compromised here it's already fighting off a virus with help of meds.

OK.... so I did not want to say it because I was embarassed.... I was told that the sinus problem I was experiencing was due to an infection caused by the virus that causes Herpes!  So the Valtrex has helped a bit.... yes, I mention the Valtrex as if you reading this knew already I was prescribed it....  So I have started using the neilmed sinus rinse and have started doing it correctly.... apparently I had been doing it wrong... OMG is all I have to say for the shit that's coming out of my nose!!!!!  I just about had a "Britney Shaving Head Bald" moment and had a nervous breakdown!!!!  This upcoming Thursday it will have been a week on the Valtrex, and though I'm seeing/feeling a slight improvement, I still hope I am able to resolve this and my nostrils go back to normal!  So we can rule the HIV meds out but I know that people that carry the HIV Virus are prone to sinus infections just due to the weakened immune system.......

Toodles!  ;)

Oh yah i used to have herpes outbreaks myself too since becoming poz. But now I take daily Acyclovir 200mg twice a day. Herpes outbreaks and HIV very much go hand in hand. Nothing to be embarrassed about. I think most everyone has herpes. Just most people (that are negative) it lays dormant in their body but since our immune systems are compromised you will get outbreaks unless you take meds for it. Everyone I know that has HiV also takes an anti-viral for herpes too.
