Title: Another Sushi Topic
Post by: songs06 on January 25, 2013, 03:48:01 pm
i heard some stuff about how bad can be eating sushi while you have low cd4 levels. when my cd4 was about 400 i ate sushi once and it turn out to be diarrhea :) but it could be not related at all, it could be regular gastroenteritis.

problem is, i love sushi a lot. i used to eat it like once a week or two. my boyfriend did order lots of sushi ingredients and told me he wanted to prepare some sushi for me. it will be totally home made.

my cd4 is 600 and viral load undetectable. cd4/cd8 is 0.55. i don't think it could be a problem but, i don't want to end up with some parasites (like cryptosporidium, or intestinal worms) so which kind of sushis could be ok?

i mean, i know vegetable ones are ok but with salmon, crab meat and other sea-food could be problem if eaten raw i guess. and also there is an option of smoked fish. is there anyone who have any experience or knowledge about safe sushi consuming? :) i don't want to break my boyfriend's heart on this :) and i want to eat without getting sick as well.

thanks.

The way to look at this issue is that with a cd4 count of 600 you're within normal range. Someone that is HIV-negative can get hold of "bad" sushi and have a bad experience, but with normal cd4 counts you'll both have the same recovery experience more or less.

My advice when eating anything raw, whether it's sushi, oysters or steak tartare is to make sure you go to a reputable place.

I agree.  Just like someone who is negative you can always get a hold of some bad fish.  We go out for sushi quite a bit and havent had a problem.  My favorite sushi place also happens to have the best url name evah....    www.sushiwhore.com

Besides, copious amounts of saki should kill any nastys

Enjoy yourself

Could not agree more. I am lucky to live close to three excellent places that serve sushi. One even has an extensive dollar menu. Nice to have such a treat for less than ten bucks a plate :)

Oh, and my cd4 count has hovered at 200 for years now.

And in case Mitchell shows up, yes I can walk here (http://www.izumiphilly.com/). Currently in the top five for sushi in the entire metro area. However, trendy gay boys prefer 1225 Raw (http://www.rawlounge.net/).

Eat sushi at a reputable restaurant.  I do.

In contrast, I wouldn't eat homemade sushi that includes raw fish, bought in a supermarket.

The FDA in the USA says that fish used in sushi must have been flash frozen.

i think i will eat sushi with boiled egg and vegetables, just to be safe. but i ve read that smoked salmon is also ok. (but i really don't get it why.) so i might try it as well. and tuna fish which usually don't have any parasites at all. someone said boiled crab meat also works fine. and i will check for flash frozen fish, i know there might be some in the supermarket. thank you for all. and additional advice is appreciated.

Usually when people use the term sushi they mean made with raw fish.  Some people lump sashimi into that term.

I dont see any danger eating "sushi" made from other things than raw fish.  Veges.  cooked fish. canned fish.  yep, all could be tasty and since its not raw fish, no danger.
