Joe (Killfoile) is Hospitalized
« on: August 10, 2010, 07:35:26 pm »
For the past few days, my wonderful Joe has been having laboured breathing.  I wasn't sure at first he was even aware of it, so I mentioned it to him.  Last night, while he was playing WOW online, he was huffing and puffing and sounding like he was doing heavy lifting and I asked him if he was ok.  He said yes, but I told him that his breathing didn't sound right and that he was making noises.  Also, his ankles and feet began to swell a while back.

I gave him my compression socks from when I had my spinal surgery a few years ago and that helped with the swelling.  But with his history of Congestive Heart Failure, I told him that I wanted him to go to the doctor today.  No specialist was available immediately, so our clinic told him to go to the Emergency Room at the Royal Victoria Hospital.  They will be keeping him, at least overnight, as there are many tests to do and they take a long time.  So far his ECG is normal; I don't think he has had a Chest X-ray yet - but I can almost bet you there will be fluid around his lungs.

At the hospital they are a little perplexed about his condition and he wanted me to share with you all here that he was in the hospital.  He does have his laptop so if they have wifi there, I'm sure he will post something when he has a chance.  If not, I will give an update when I return home later.  I have to bring him his HIV meds and some DVDs to watch.

Geez, I haven't been here in a long time - Hi Jan and Rocky and everyone else!  Hope you are all doing well.  I had to take a valium to stop from shaing when Joe left for the hospital.  I told him that "I would kill him if he dies!"  He ASSURED me he wouldn't.  This weekend is Pride Montreal and we definitely have plans.

Thanks for reading.

Stephen,

Let Joe know, we're all wishing him the best. It's good that you convinced him to get to the hospital. I didn't know that Joe was dealing with congestive heart failure. I am sure he must have mentioned it here,  I missed it somehow.

Wishing you the best Joe, and a speedy recovery. Rest up...

Hey All,

Thank you all for the warm wishes and it seems to be a somewhat false alarm, but they really don't know what happened.

After 9 hours, I'm back home. I have a history of Cardiomyopathy (Class 4, the worst), Congestive Heart Failure and COPD. I got a all clear from my Cardiologist, who said my heart has returned to normal for a 56 year old man with 26 years of HIV. So it was a surprise when the feet started swelling and I mean swelling, to where I could not put on any shoes. That didn't concern me so much, until my left side started going numb. That got my attention and off to hospital I went. They did a full CBC, EKG, Chest X-Ray and pumped me with enough Lasix to drain a swamp.

We added a second diuretic, Furosimide to get ride of the excess fluid and my feet have already started to drain. It's been incredibly hot and humid here, which always causes problems with my water retention. The docs think this is "just one of those things", that we will watch, but they expect a week of double diuretics should do the trick and I just have to watch myself for any more swelling.

Hopefully, by morning, the swelling will be gone. It should be, as I am pissing every half hour and the amounts are incredible. I had no idea I could retain so much water, but each hour I feel a little less "under water" so life is good and I appreciate your good thoughts, because I knew that you were all pulling for me.

I'm glad this seems to be just a false alarm.  I haven't been around all that long, so I don't know about things you've posted in the past.  If this doesn't sound too inappropriate at this point, I was wondering if the heart condition is something you had regardless of HIV or whether HIV and older meds are responsible.  My brother's partner is only 35 and has heart issues and he is neg, so I know it happens in the general population a lot.  And, my friend's dad has COPD and emphysema and he never smoked.  He got it from decades of paint and varnish fumes.

Anyway, I'm glad to hear all is well.  Here's to good health from here on out!

Joe I'm glad your home, and your OK, as you well know my (Bob my other half) has Congestive Heart Failure and COPD, he had open heart surgery about 8 yrs. ago, and is on a whole host of Meds for this including  Furosimide....JOE the HOT and Humid Weather is a big fat NO, NO, so try and stay cool, and outta the hot sun, anything over 80 degrees isn't good for Congestive Heart Failure and COPD, also
watch you sodium-intake as well, as this isn't good for you, Joe, I hope you have continued good health
and I'm sure your other half will make sure you are taken care of, that's what I do for Bob  ;)

Joe, you scared me honey...

These f**king cardiac issues can be a nightmare.   Just because you're peeing a lot, you know you have to still keep drinking a lot, right?   But I know that you already know that....

Take care honey, we have had enough forum sickness lately.   Hope you are back to your old self real soon

Anyway, I'm glad to hear all is well.  Here's to good health from here on out!

My heart became enlarged around 1990 and we believe it was caused by both the HIV virus and some of the older medications. It took 20 years, until 2009 for my heart to return to its normal size. Unfortunately due to the enlarging, I was more prone to pneumonia and eventually I developed both CHF and COPD. Since I have always had heart issues, I watch my salt intake and now I will be watching my liquid intake. Talking to the docs in the ER, they suggested that I no longer worry about drinking enough fluids and rather only drink to quench my thirst, at least until the hot weather ends.

Oh Joel, that's too funny, my other half loves the Buffalo Bills, and acts like that every Sunday during the regular season (I like the Raiders myself) but, I hope he doesn't have a heart Attack while watching his beloved Eagles, now that wouldn't be a good thing  :D

I should have been clearer. They gave me Lasix in the hospital and sent me home with the furosemide to use until I shed all of this water.

Ok, enough about all that, let's talk about WoW.   What server are you on for starters?

Glad to hear you are doing better Joe..... Hospitals are no place for a vacation... Symptom wise you did the right thing, and it could have been any number of things.... better safe then 6 feet under....
Don't obsess over the wrong things.  Life isn't about your numbers, it isn't about this forum, it isn't about someone's opinion.  It's about getting out there and enjoying it.   I am a person with HIV - not the other way around.

Hey Joe,

Damn, I am out of touch for a few days and this happens!  :o

I'm glad you are doing better.

Give Stephen a big hug for me. I still have that great photo of the two of you from Montreal in 2006.

Have a big hug for yourself too!

Joe, thank you for so much. Your words, your insight, and most importantly, your survival.

Each day you draw breath - scratch that - each day you thrive, and LIVE WITH instead of DIE FROM HIV serves as a lighthouse for the rest of us.  Please continue to be that.
"Many people, especially in the gay community, turn to oral sex as a safer alternative in the age of AIDS. And with HIV rates rising, people need to remember that oral sex is safer sex. It's a reasonable alternative."
