So if this was done before kill me now. LOL...just kidding...

I was curious how everyone found out they were poz and if they know how they got it? I got mine from a peeler back in 95, but I didnt find out I was poz till Dec 05 when I almost died in the hospital. I tracked down who gave it to me and the kicker is it was the first time I didnt use a condom...who woulda thunk it? Found out he use to share needles with people for riods.

I found out my husband of 10 yrs had a secret life. of meth and bareback orgies. and he didn't believe aids was real so he never bothered using a condom. i thought we were together for 10 yrs didn't worry about protection. he had 2 kids he visited on the weekends he stopped visiting them and starting parting apparently. so i left him in April and got tested in June. i haven't seen or heard from him since April.

The health dept. notified us that somebody who just tested poz had listed us as contacts. We got tested and here I am.

I got it because I became a meth addict and well those of you who have done meth know that it kind of makes you think your invincible so you dont insist on condoms at all. So it could have been one of about 10000000 people :-S (i think i went over a year with one or more sexual partners a day hahaha). I found out 3 months ago because i decided to take a home access anonymous test and sure enough it was positive. Thankfully though i quit drugs almost 2 years ago (it got old) otherwise i would probably be worst off :-D

I got tested by my Gynecologist because I knew I was very "high-risk".
I tested positive in 1990.

I had been having sex w/no condoms and sharing needles since '76.
I never have gotten ill though.
I just had a feeling that I would test poz.

I also don't know who or when, not to hard to guess how (unprotected sex), I recognize that is unimportant to know, but like many of you, I wish I did know. I think it happened in mid 2000 (thats when I got the "defining" illness), but was not aware of my status until 2005.

Well, on Feb 23, 2001 I went on a walk at about 1 am with my boyfriend who said he'd keep me company because I was having insomnia and couldn't sleep. This was a Christian college campus so I thought I was safe. I was a virgin then and naive enough to think that he respected my wish to stay that way. We got to a place--wasn't well patrolled by the security guards--they would get you to come back to the dorms if you were caught--and it was a nice quiet, peaceful place. He put the moves on me, I said no, he said I was his girlfriend, he shouldn't have to ask for sex, I said no again and I won't go into detail about what happened after that....Anyway, fast forward to about the second week of March 2001, I drove up to visit my homestate for spring break. I staggered to the Urgent care not being able to keep anything down and a fever of 106. After a whole battery of tests, they concluded it was CMV, but it is more likely that I got two viruses, but it was ARS symptoms that hospitilized me not necessarily CMV. When I felt better, I went to a blood drive. I didn't have the knowledge then about HIV (I didn't know about window periods and thought since he was an athlete he couldn't possibly have anything) so I thought since that first test was negative and nothing else came up that I was safe and okay to donate blood. The Red Cross sent me a letter stating I needed to get tested. I went back to the infectious disease doctor (one of the team of doctors that puzzled over my case in the hospital) and in May 2001 I found out I was positive.

The end. There you have it. If I could hit those kind of odds again on a trip to Vegas, I'd be a rich woman..... But anyhow, it really doesn't matter. I usually don't tell people because they tend to ask that to try to put you in the "innocent victims" file or the "bastards who deserve what they got" file. I don't like to give them that opportunity to do that. I only posted it on this site because people tend to be more supportive here and wouldn't judge me or give me an overwhelming amount of pity or "at least you are an innocent victim" like many people are prone to do (at least the people my mom and grandma told and that support group I made a mistake of telling).

Here's the whole story. I had been in a monogamous relationship with a guy in which we had unprotected sex after both being tested. We broke up because I was moving to Seattle to go to grad school. I decided I didn't want to be in a relationship for a while and was looking forward to casually dating. Of course the first guy I go out with ends up being "the One" and we start dating. I wanted to get tested so we could do the unprotected sex/monogamous thing again but my boyfriend was VERY uncomfortable about getting tested. His brother had recently died of AIDS and he could barely even talk about it. So after several months we slipped up once during sex and didn't use condoms. The next day I told him we had made a mistake and insisted we both needed to be tested. It took a couple of weeks but he agreed. His test came back positive and mine came back "indeterminate". I waited a couple of weeks, tested again and came back positive. However almost 15 years later we are still together, both healthy and happy.

this is an interesting thread...

On one hand, we all know that it ultimately doesn't matter how and from who you got the virus...

On the other hand, it is comforting to know that many others out there were infected the same way (carelessness or the heat of the moment, whatever..) It's all about us owning up to the choices we made and living with them in the here and now.

Judging from my numbers, it must have happened 10+ years ago or later. Most of the time, I was engaged in serial monogamies and, in-between, occasional polygamies. Somewhere along these lines I got that special gift but I have no idea when, from whom or on what occasion. What I do know now is that Mr Unknown didn't pass me any resistencies, so perhaps he didn't even know his own status.

I didn't get any symptoms until last summer when I got an oral thrush and felt quite tired. For the first time in many years, I had to see a doctor. That was when I found out about the harsh truth, diagnosed on Sep 1st, 2006.

I think I contracted HIV in late December, 1982 from a guy visiting from Houston for 2 weeks. We had sex every night (and a few days) and a week after he left I came down with the worst "flu" I've ever had in my life. He got sick by late 1983 and died in 1984 and by mid 1983 I was practicing safer sex. I didn't get tested until late 1989 after I found my bf's AZT he'd conveniently forgotten to mention. I don't think the bf infected me but if he did it was in early 1983 before we started practicing safer sex.

I don't have a clue when I was infected. Sometimes I wish I could pinpoint the event and then sometimes I'm glad I can't. I was always pretty safe. I only have a handful of what would be considered "risky" encounters. So I guess it must have been one of those. I didn't get tested regularly because I thought I was safe enough and I never had anything that even resembled a seroconversion incident. My last HIV test prior to diagnosis was in March 2000 and it was negative. I got my diagnosis in Jan. 2006. So that basically gives me the window I guess.

I found out because I had swollen lymph nodes and a very astute doctor that knew something was up. Otherwise I might not have known till I ended up very sick. Luckily, I caught mine at a point where I think the immune damage is minimal (if that can ever be the case).

I also had no clue as to what a "peeler" was!

Why? Because we need to remember all the people reading our posts, especially any who are still negative or who have friends who are negative. We often question here what is safe sex. Well by pinpointing, if we can, what infected us, we are defining what is safe and what is not, if not for ourselves, for others who might still be unsure or who might hear conflicting information: another form of disclosure. If we were all anonymous here, without a face, without personal details, it might not matter much. But each time someone 'connects' with one of us, sees himself or herself in us, in aspects of who we are, we are talking directly to him or her. An important thread: thanks for creating it! Win

I was hoping to contribute in two ways to this forum (my first post on this site, awesome site by the way, great sense of community):

1) answer the "peeler" mystery, but Seven and Northernguy beat me to it. It is a stripper. Us Canadians get acquainted with peelers early in our adolescence.
2) I too, like Seven got it from a peeler. I literally sold my soul for $160. In 2000, a few months after my baby girl was born, away on business, I was in a strip club horny and thinking I would have one last m2m encounter. The ironic part is that I didn't have a condom so there was no anal. I must be one of the lucky ones who got it from oral sex ( a good topic for another forum). He came in my mouth, i didn't swallow.

Anyway, it cost me two years of my life. For the first year I was so sick and had no idea what was wrong with me. I have no memory of most of that year. After the diagnosis I was a basket case - depressed, scared to death and pretty much cried myself to sleep every night. My wife stayed by my side the whole time (another good forum topic, as I wonder how many guys are in my position).

Six years later I'm in a good place mentally and physically, probably the best shape I've been in my life. We had another baby girl in 2004 (yet another topic). I'm undetectable and other than being plagued by guilt now and then, consider myself a very lucky man.

Based on risk behavior, I got mine in late '79 or early '80, in my (hopefully) discrete way describing it, by doing something I shouldn't have done with someone I shouldn't have done it with. To my knowledge, that individual died lond ago, with so many other men and women.

I found out from an earlier employer. Lufthansa, I was working as a flight attendant and after a check up I got the nice call which informed me that I was hiv + About 1 week later my job was terminated, at that time in Germany this was possible as I was still in the probation period of 6 months which all new employees must go through.

I have no idea (well, I have an idea, but not sure who). But can say that indeed I'm sure that alcohol was at least partly to blame. No doubt acquired (no pun intended) this bug during my year and a half of endless partying and lack of judgment sleeping with a lot of folks. I think it's only in post-diagnosis that I can appreciate the calls to educate college students about the dangers of heavy drinking and partying - I used to think that was for pussies (pardon my language, but 'twas my thinking at the time).

Unfortunately it takes two people to remain monogamous and my ex unfortunately did not... I went to my doctor after finding out monogamy was only on my side so I had all testing for std's ran... to make this short I tested positive to hiv booted out my ex... he now resides in NYC and at that time it was a given death sentence... so any who I met a wonderful person we dated and this new wonderful man was the one... but, unfortunately I could not deal with being hiv+ eventhough he did not care that I was hiv he wanted to stay together although he was negative... I closed the door to a perfect person and I really regret it... but, life goes on and here I am living although my doctor said I'd be dead within a year... 16 years later... here I am... I have always assumed I got my HIV from oral sex in May 1990. A guy came in my mouth. I swallowed in a reflex. This was at a sleepover during the famous Queensday festivities in Amsterdam in a house with mostly HIV+ guys. My partner must have assumed I was HIV+ too. I had tested negative before this happened. Being honest to myself: I got tested because I had had unprotected sex several times. I was depressed and had started to take risks. I did have an mutually passive anal contact in January 1990, so it might have been the more accepted route of contamination.

During my seroconversion I got litterally mad with fear. I got tested. I was negative 3 months after May happened, but I knew something was wrong. I was hospitilised for 3 months for depression. In 1993 I got tested again after my health started to deteriorate. I tested positive and my t-cell count was down to 200. 2 years ago I stopped taking antidepressants. I now realise I started barebacking last year with HIV+ partners after years of safe sex because I fell into another depression.

found out in 1999 when i was very sick and hiv was the last test they ran and wala!!! i had hiv with a tcell count of 140 and was married. Come to find out i got it from my boyfriend before I was married and he had even come to my wedding and didnt let me know. He died in 92 from "bone cancer", and "skin cancer" but once i was diagnosed i called his sister and she told me he had died from AIDS. we were together from 86 to Valentines day 87.

Well, this is a very sore subject with most HIV+ people, myself included. I was glad to see there were some serious responses and got a kick out of the humorous ones too.

After a couple of public articles and being open about my status on Myspace I recieved hundreds of emails and contacts. I got tired of answering this question. LOL, You're funny Marc. You know that guy turned out to be the first person I could really talk to when I was going through the whole mess so I think my first impression was shot after calling him drunk at 2am all upset

Ironically, both he and I ended up in relationships with other people about a month later. Then, we both ended up single again at nearly the same time 6 months later or so. I opted for a break, but he's now once again happy and in love with another cute partner.

However, we are still friends and I think very highly of him!

I really love the humor you all show on this topic. The late 70's and early 80's were wild. I was living in San Francisco from 1972 to 1980. My partner and I went to the tubs every weekend. We broke up a year after moving to Los Angeles. I was still a bit wild and had a f**k-buddy who later turned out to be positive.

In 1985 friends of mine and I discussed the plague and decided that we would not be surprised if we were positive. We all tested positive. I found out the month before moving to Arizona.

I had an idea that I was positive after having flu-like sypmtoms and went to get tested. I went in for the results and gave them my id, the person looked it up and hesitated and said that doctor would need to talk with me. The doctor that sat down with me and actually told me could not have been nicer. Well the idea behind it is this:

The Dutch government fears that people will become reluctant to test themselves if they can be put in jail for not disclosing.

The case this week was that a guy who knew he was poz had a relationship for a few years, but... he told his partner he was tested negative.
When his partner became infected he still was lying about it. Finaly the mother of this guy told the partner about the poz status of her son.

So, even these people will not go behind bars. Morally wrong of course!
Try to imagine how it has to be to find out that the partner you love is acting like this.

The Dutch Govt is probably making the right call.

One of the barriers to testing is the stigma and life-changing aspects of the diagnosis,i ncluding the responsibilities some govts place on those who know they are infected, so many simply avoid the diagnosis for as long as they possibly can.

Bad for them in the long run, but in the short term, they have a great time believing they are neg, all the while spreading the virus like crazy.

I was very naive to think that I was practising safe sex because oral was always stated to be so low risk...well come on who can suck someone with a condom on..not me that's for sure, but still I though I was safe, my partner is still with me, but he still gets angry most of the time blaming me, and he always will, he thinks I could have done more. I live with the guilt of ruining his life as it was. But one thing is for sure we love each other a great deal and we are a 98 persent match, I often wonder how much better things could be if it wasn't for this. But we have mostly good days now, it's when we have to go and get these bloody blood test every 3 months that he goes into this dark space and sometimes lashes out. But again I do understand and I hope that one day if we can make it though all this we'll grow old together if that is in the cards.

Yeah, a lot of people seem to think it's an appropriate question. I think it's the same thing as meeting someone and asking them how they got their children. Like hiv, in most cases it was because they had unprotected sex. But other people got their children through adoption or IVF or other means. In either case, what does it matter? People would never dream of asking someone how they ended up with children and it should be no different to how a person ended up with hiv. It's a personal matter.
