A bad day and a bank run
« on: September 24, 2008, 11:07:31 pm »
I just spent the last few days locked up in (boring) meetings in Beijing, breathing the air that has returned to its unbelievably polluted level after the Olympics and avoiding all drinks with milk it them. Then a class A typhoon (hurricane) hit Hong Kong and my flight back home yesterday was delayed for 3 hours and I had to spend an additional 2 hours on the plane because it couldn't land in weather conditions that had turned severe again even after the typhoon had left.

And I have been coughing like crazy (no, not PCP, just a bad flu, my doctor said)..

And when I landed, there were 17 voice messages and 8 of them were from my mother. Apparently there were rumors circulating on the internet and SMS were spreading like crazy over the mobile network that the largest locally owned bank was about to collapse because of its alleged exposure to AIA. The bank run apparently was triggered by some malfunctioning ATM machines which connections were cut by severe weather.

All my mother's (i.e. family's) saving in fixed deposits is in that bank. She was lining up outside the local branch for hours in total panic. By the time I landed the bank had closed for the day (6.30pm) and I had to assure her over the phone again and again that the bank was "too big to fall" (not rather convincingly, as I at the point didn't have enough information about what was going on to not also feel worried.. after all it's mostly my money too). It was of course mostly that psychological fear in her that our family was cruised.. etc etc, hubby died of AIDS, she's HIV and now that one son she can relay on is HIV+ like her. Not illogical for her to think that the losing her life saving is part of our endgame.

So things (with the bank) have somewhat returned to normal this morning.. and I have to take a day off..

oh well, life goes on.. ;)

I don't know what to say.  You've had a bad day, that's for sure.

One day off?  I think you should take the rest of the week.  Dr's orders~~

Thanks guys, I can tell from real experiences now that being told you might loss your life saving is NO WHERE near as devastating as being told that you're tested HIV positive.

Makes my runny stomach suddenly feel banal.

Hey Joe, I thought that side effect had somewhat subsided? Wish you well!
