Anti-malarials and HIV meds?

Hi guys,

Quick question. I am about to go abroad to a malaria-risk country, and will be on Doxycycline while away (once a day tablet). Do you know it to interact with HIV meds? I'm currently on Sustiva+Kivexa combo. Reading the literature, they do not seem to rule out taking anti-malarials at the same time. I'd be taking them at different hours of the day too (in the morning, and before bed).

Just wondering, any experiences of taking both? If no effects, I'm all the happier for that! :)

With the HIV meds, anti-malarials, and diarrhea pills, I feel like a travelling pharmacy...  :P

I was on Doxy while in Africa for work for several months, it did not work, I got the worse type of malaria which interacted with HIV, hello 1 year later, just barely recuparating, it was a year of hell, nobody knew what to do with my healh, went through 6 different HIV meds cause I rejected all of them, last week I finally got great news, and have started a new combo study through a Pharmaceutical company, I feel amazing.

Sorry I dont want to scare you, but theres better meds in Africa that you can take other than doxy and it does not interact with most meds.

Last time I traveled in a malaria zone, I took Malarone.  Supposed to be very effective - and it did not conflict with Atripla.

Doxy and sunshine do not mix. I take Doxy for eye inflammation and I can't go outside without covering up all my skin. I took another antimalarial drug too for awhile, Plaquenil. I tried it for myopathy but it didn't seem to work.

I used Malarone while in Africa a few years ago and had no troubles. My HIV clinic is technically an infectious disease clinic so they do more than just HIV. WHich means they stay up on these kind of things. My Dr said there should be no issues when I took them. You might also ask about imodium and an antibiotic just incase you pick up a "gut bug." I took some along but didn't need them.
