Valtex vs Acyclovir for Shingles?
« on: August 25, 2008, 11:12:11 am »
I contracted shingles this past Satuday.   My regular Hiv Clininc was closed so I went to another hopsital nearby that I've been too before.   They diagnosed my condition as "Shingles"  And gave me a prescription for Valtrex. A buddy of mine told me that I should be on Acyclovir, since he had Shingles twice before and this med was prescribed for him.   I looked up a couple of sites on Acyclovir and it seems to be bad on the liver.  I'm already being watched everytime I go to my doctor for liver function as mine was damaged from some earlier meds.  My liver wasn't damaged REAL bad...I mean, it still functions well.    My question is should I go ahead and do a walk-in at my Hiv clinic and try to get Acyclovir, or does Valtrex work just as good on Shingles?  Was wondering if anybody out there knows the ups and downs of both drugs.  I live in Dallas,TX. and thank you

Hi WB,

Valtrex is actually the prefered treatment for shingles.

Check out the Shingles Lesson: http://www.aidsmeds.com/articles/Shingles_6797.shtml

Hope you recover quickly. Shingles simply SUCK.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts
