I love Palm Springs. My partner and I were last there in April for a psychopharmacology seminar. Very gay friendly, good restaurants, warm weather and beautiful scenery. Los Angeles is less than 2 hours away if you want the big city.

I had a family friend who lives there.  Gay, of course.  I remember going there for the first time when I was 15 or so.  I hadn't done much traveling at that point.  The dry heat was what stunned me.  I came from Indiana with humidity.  It felt like being in an oven when we got there.  It was a huge shock to the system.  Obviously, people get use to that.  I also remember that just about everyday, we would feel some tremors.  That was also strange, coming from the midwest.  You would see your glass move a little across the table.

But, I did really enjoy the area.  We took the tram up the San Jacinto mountains and did some hiking.  I would like to go back.

I'm from L.A. and live in San Francisco. I designed and managed an employee safety program for a Palm Springs hospital.  I've been there a few times because it is an easy trip from anywhere in Southern California.

In Palm Springs you will need air conditioning which will always be running so, you will write a sizable payment to Southern California Edison.  You will be living year round in the desert, you will need a house with a pool and some misting sprayers.  Your water bill would be beyond belief.  A few years after my AIDS diagnosis, I thought about moving there once and also looked for a cottage or apartment in Tijuana but as a person on disability, there was no way to afford such a move.

Why not take a look at Santa Monica, West Hollywood, Long Beach or San Diego as a place of residence and play in Palm Springs on weekends?  This time of year, you wouldn't want to be there, it is triple digit HOT right now.  Take another trip and look at some of the other cities, look at the job, housing, and healthcare online 8)  Have the best day

As some one who frequently visits Palm Springs and currently lives in San Diego, I think you would love it. It has a very active, slightly older, most times, gay life and is very affordable. The White Party will changes everything!

I use to live in SF but have been in San Diego for the last 12 years, SF for 7 prior to that. I spent more money on new umbrellas, heat and mortgage then you will spend on air conditioning, and it is so sunny and peaceful. You do not need air conditioning 12 months out of the year. 3 or or 4 max. Just look for a place with a pool and maybe not a house. There are many condos for sale now at little or nothing with very low HOAs.

Go for it.

I LOVE Palm Springs.  beautiful  small city in the desert.  I would love to live there, but there isn't any jobs in particular.   Quite a few celebs have houses there and you might run into one at dinner on the strip.  years ago i ran into sunny bono and Cher eating dinneer, thats been years ago when he was mayor.

Very gay friendly town and they also have a great burger place there in the center of town that is WONDERFUL!

What is the HIV care like in PS? I know it's a big tourist area but what about full time residents. I would not want to have to drive a hour for my specialist visit.

Palm Springs is full of cocksuckers, and probably half of them have AIDS. Do you honestly think you're going to be driving an hour for a doctor? It's like living in a desert version of Provincetown.

I always question whether or not I'd enjoy living in such a place. It's like being locked in a gay cruise ship. Even though I've lived in cities with large gay populations for over 20 years I've never lived in an official gay area. More like the marginal areas that have gay people living there, but are not primarily gay.

I have live in large metro areas before, but have never had any gay neighbors, why, I don't know the answer to that that one, just unlucky I guess, even living here in ABQ, for the last 10 yrs. I still don't have any to speak of  :-[

maybe someday before I get to old, I'll actually know what that will be like, I hope  :o

Do you live downtown or in the suburbs? When I say I've lived in cities it's always been in the urban core.

Nope, we live in the NE foothills of the City, downtown is about 14 miles away from us in the Southwest urban-core of ABQ-metro  ;)

Well there you go. That's as if I lived in Cherry Hill, NJ so no wonder you don't know any other gay people. Plus the metro area where I live is 7 times larger than where you do, so I would think 14 miles away is less populated than what I find here. ABQ is like living in Albany, in terms of size.

I basically live 12 blocks south of the "official" gay area but that neighborhood has gotten too expensive for a lot of gay folks, so while it maintains some gay bars and shops many gay people have moved in adjoining areas.

ps: I'm looking at North Albuquerque Acres on google-maps. If you live further out than that you're out in the boonies.

lol.........well I didn't say I didn't know any others gays in ABQ, I just don't live close enough to have any real nieghbors that might be gay, (at least none that I've ever seen or spoke within my own nieghborhood)

and no, we still live within the city limits, with all of the city amenities, Fire, Police, Water,  as well as the same utilities that everyone else uses , so I don't live in the boonies  ;D

however Capt. Carl (Carl Wilcox) did live in the boonies about 29 miles east of us
on other side of the hills, to go and visit anyone else we know, they only live 4 to 10 miles away  ;)

and one of our bars that we go to is only 3 miles away, and the other one is located in the Nob Hill area (witch is very gay friendly) so were not that isolated at all....

I've been thinking about retiring to Palm Springs.  That would be about 4 years off, maybe sooner, but unlikely.  I have the cash to buy a condo at current prices, but I would have to rent it out until I retire and can move there.

Does anyone know what the rental market is like?  I see lots of rentals available online, so I'm questioning whether I would end up with another money losing rental.  I already have a house that I rent out that takes about $500/month or more out of my bank account.  I have another condo that's paid off, but once I factor in all the costs and overhead (just had to replace carpets), it is a break-even. So real estate investing hasn't really been profitable for me.

Seems like now would be the time to buy, but still on the fence.  Comments?

I think I could live in Key West all year if I had a house and a garden. Provincetown must be dreary in the winter.  I like those two American resorts though.

Never been on a gay cruise but I get a "trapped in gay lala land" feeling in Sitges and the Canaries. Havent been to Ibiza in years but I liked it when I was young and never felt trapped there.

All these spa or resort towns have their own special "energies" and "vibrations" and you got to find the one that synchs with your own.  Huge cities seem to have all vibrations and all energies and they sort of cancel each other out so most huge cities seem very livable to me.

Thanks for the info on the general trends of the real estate market.  I had been watching prices and thought I noticed a recent uptrend.  In CA, investment groups have stepped in and are sweeping up all the good deals, paying cash.  What was really strange is that I checked into financing a condo, and the bank said they finance no condo's in that area.  That may be changing now.  Maybe I'll just have to settle for Long Beach... assuming rentals stay reasonably priced in the future.

If I remember it was about a 3 hour drive from San Diego?
Is that mountain tram still there?
(tram, not tramp. Lol)
Rode it up to the top. 80 degrees down in PS, played in the snow top of the mountain.
Seen more movie stars strolling on the streets than ever before.
As nice as PS was to visit, seemed more like a place to retire to in later life.
Especially for the golf lovers.

Pasadena was nice to visit also. For those San Diego residents.
And Julian, CA. Apple fest. Apple pies. Skyline drive.
Oh the memories.....
