I went and had mine last week.  I don't like getting them so early in the season because then they run out early, and the height of the season is really December - early March.  I think the flu shot only last in your body for 3 months anyway, and it takes 10 days to be effective after you receive it.

When my cd4s were much lower there were a couple of years where I got two flu shots.  One in September and then another in January of February.  My doctor treated a lot of airline attendants and they all did this.

Hi Philly...I'm not certain but I think maybe Tim Horn or someone else in the know once said the flu shot lasted about 6 months so a shot in October should help until about April.  Correct me if I'm wrong.

Jody and Philly: Your posts inspired me to check what CDC has to say. Em

It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body and provide protection against influenza virus infection. In the meantime, you are still at risk for getting the flu. That's why it's better to get vaccinated early in the fall, before the flu season really gets under way.

Can I get the flu even though I got a flu vaccine this year?
Yes. The ability of flu vaccine to protect a person depends on two things: 1) the age and health status of the person getting the vaccine, and 2) the similarity or "match" between the virus strains in the vaccine and those in circulation.

Why do I need to get vaccinated against the flu every year?
Flu viruses change from year to year, which means two things. First, you can get the flu more than once during your lifetime. The immunity (natural protection that develops against a disease after a person has had that disease) that is built up from having the flu caused by one virus strain doesn't always provide protection when a new strain is circulating. Second, a vaccine made against flu viruses circulating last year may not protect against the newer viruses. That is why the influenza vaccine is updated to include current viruses every year.

Another reason to get flu vaccine every year is that after you get vaccinated, your immunity to the disease declines over time and may be too low to provide protection after one year.

Thanks Em. I'm not allowed to get the flu shot  :-\

source page:

http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/qa/flushot.htm

Excerpt:

Who should not get a flu shot?

Talk with a doctor before getting a flu shot if you:
1) Have ever had a severe allergic reaction to eggs  :-[ or to a previous flu shot
or
2) Have a history of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS).

Hi all.

Flu shot - check.
Pneumonia - check.

My doc had me do them both 10 days ago, same arm ouch! I wasn't very clear on what the pneumonia shot was or for, a vaccine? Does that exist? Has anyone else gotten one?  I would appreciate any info/feedback?  Thanks!

Happy Friday!

Peace & Love,

Eric

Hi Erict

Here's a link to make it easy for you to learn about the Pneumovax vaccine you received. You won't require another one for five years. http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/pneumovax_ids.htm  It's recommended as you'll read that an HIV+ person receive one as soon after diagnosis as possible.

You're so right re: allergies. When I wrote the thread title it was geared only for those who know they are eligible. I did not know about the restriction regarding GBS however, which nearly took out a friend of mine. Thanks for the new news.

These are the CDC guidelines:
January 28, 2005

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) previously recommended that only certain high-risk groups be vaccinated against influenza this flu season because the shot was in short supply. But now, those who are not in the high-risk groups should contact their doctor or local public health department for information on the availability of the vaccine in their area.

It's still most important for the high-risk groups to be vaccinated against the illness. However, in areas where there's enough vaccine available, non-high-risk individuals (including children 2 years to 18 years) should be considered for the flu shot.

So, who is considered high-risk? The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) currently recommend that these high-risk groups be given the flu shot:

children 6 to 23 months
anyone 65 and up
women who will be pregnant during the flu season
anyone who lives or works with infants under 6 months old
residents of long-term care facilities, such as nursing homes
any adult or child with chronic medical conditions, such as asthma
health-care personnel who have direct contact with patients
children - from 6 months to 18 years - on long-term aspirin therapy
Late last year, the CDC also added the following to the list of priority groups that should get the flu vaccine:

out-of-home caregivers and household contacts of anyone in any of the high-risk groups
all adults 50 to 64 years of age
For children under 9 who are getting a flu shot for the first time, it's given in two separate shots 1 month apart. It can take up to 1 or 2 weeks after the shot for the body to build up protection to the flu.

Anyone who's severely allergic to eggs and egg products should not get a flu shot, because the ingredients for flu shots are actually grown inside eggs. If your child is allergic to eggs or egg products, let your child's doctor know before he or she gets a flu shot. Also speak with your child's doctor if your child has ever had a severe reaction to a flu shot.
