Hi All:

The site location votes for AMG 2013 are in with voting closing yesterday, November 2, 2012 at 11:59 pm (Eastern time)

AMG 2013 will be held in Chicago, Illinois, USA -

Many of the votes requested that dates for AMG 2013 be set for August 2013; however, there were also some July preferences - and one preference for September. Typically, people begin arriving for AMG on Wednesday, with some staying until Tuesday; however, there are others who show up on Thursday, Friday and those that leave on Sunday or Monday.... So, as you can see, when dates are established, that does not prevent someone from arriving early or departing later (although, depending on the hotel - the rate may be adjusted accordingly for an early arrival or late departure outside of the dates established for the group rates - which hopefully Dennis - our hotel negotiator extraordinary - has been able to accomplish for so may AMGs).

Please provide your date preferences.Let's try to get thoughts on date preferences in and finalized by Friday, November 16th.

We will try to accommodate, as best we can what the majority date request is; however, hotel availability and rates also have to be considered.

Thanks in advance for keeping AMG a member-driven event.

I'm happy with whatever accommodates the largest number of people. Since I can take time off whenever I need it, I'll follow those who have stricter schedules.

September is problematic in that anyone going to school, working for a school, or have kids in school will likely not be able to attend.

So again late July or early August.

REALLY?! I had no idea. And here I am just offering my preference as requested. Might as well not even vote Tuesday as I live in a red state and my minority voice doesn't count.

Yes, we’ve had the discussion. Again and again. I was expecting that argument and had my rebuttal ready. I’m sorry that RAB was the one to bring it up and out. It’s hard not to take it personally when someone quotes you, right RAB hunny? I apologize to you, but to no one else at this time.

Of course I have personal reasons for wanting AMG to be in September. I prefer (and prefer is the operative word) a different climate for my vacation, and Texas is still pretty hot in September. Chicago in September is more likely to be “Fall-like” than Chicago in August. It’s also easier for me to rack up a little debt when I can justify it as “my little birthday to myself.” It’s also hard for me to leave my yard and garden without water for a week during the hottest, driest part of the year.

Of course it’s easier for many people to take their vacation in July and August. I get that. It’s been used as an ultimatum by advocates who can be inflexible. The flip side of that is many people demand to get their vacations in July and August, including the staff at Santi’s work. Remember how Santi only got to come for 3 days this year? How he had to leave on Sunday? That’s because he just couldn’t get the time off in July or August. They suggested he take a week off in (you guessed it) September.

We've also had the discussion that travel prices are lower after Labor Day. Remember that? It's cheaper.

But besides all that, what no one seems to remember is that the one year we did have it in September (San Francisco) it was the most-attended AMG to date. So don't make the argument that "many people" are affected and attendance will be low; let them speak up for themselves and voice their preference. And let the coolest month win.

I'm OK with any date selected but I would like to have the discussion and see how many of the actual people who will attend would not be able to make it if AMG were to be held in a month where the weather is cooler , it sure would make for a more enjoyable AMG and perhaps add a few more destinations for consideration next time also .

It cant hurt to discuss it I suppose .

Honestly, with enough lead time, I can make almost anytime work. Which is why I didn't give any specific time. Sid and I have plans from 7/6-7/11, but otherwise, July, Aug, Sept (hell Oct, Nov too) are feasible for me.
Given my flexibility I don't like to add a "vote" -- I know others have stronger preferences (for whatever reason) and if we can accomodate a majority, great by me.

I agree that San Francisco was a great time and a great crowd... but am open to most dates that are not in the Winter...just cant see going to where it is cold/rainy . so June, July,Aug or Sept is fine with me

I am also open to most any time as well. I just recall we have some that must travel before mid August. I am also sensitive to Santi's dilemma as well. I hope we can sort this out in the next few weeks. A "perfect time" will be almost impossible to achieve.

It is a good thing so many people are flexible in their choice of dates for AMG '13 Chicago. As Phil pointed out hotel availability will be a major issue. For me I would choose September myself this year. As my roomie Mark cannot attend the first week of August so scratch that for me too. That shouldn't be a problem this year it would seem. My second choice would be mid to late July if September is no good for some. Chicago is not that far for anyone in the US to travel to so some might be able to do a long weekend whatever date is chosen.

1st choice- September
2nd choice- Mid to late July

Based on what I've read from everyone and my own experience with weathern patterns in the Great Lakes Area, I offically cast my preference after September 15.

Plus, that gives me time to get healed up and get back to work.

Greetings fellow AMG friends...I am on my last day of an eleven day trip to Portugal, France and Spain beginning in Lisbon and ending in Barcelona. I would now have to say that Barcelona belongs on the list of "must visit" potential AMG cities...what an incredible place with so much to offer for literally anybody! I return to Kentucky tomorrow (Nov. 13.)

Update: Dennis and I have communicated - he is willing to once again "work his magic" in checking out hotels once we have a better idea of dates/time of year.

Another FYI --- hotels in Chicago (non-group, non-"Dennis magic" rates) for hotels right downtown (the Loop area) are running around $160 night for some really great hotels with great amenities and right off the rail stations for September dates....

They are tending to run higher for summer months of July-August -

However, the published rates are always significantly higher than rates that Dennis has been able to get for the group.

Feel free to contribute thoughts on possible hotels when making date/time of year recommendations (as I believe some have done previously --- i.e. the Best Western in Boys Town area)

Thanks again Dennis, and Phil as well for getting this started for 2013. I think a hotel in the Loop area would be very centrally located as the North Broadway boystown neighborhood near Wrigley Field is a bit out of the way for many Chicago attractions and cabs or two trains would be needed to get to and from the Best Western. It is a great place to spend weekend evenings or go to a Cubs game if they are home but that is about all, otherwise it is not very easy to get to and from as the Loop downtown is.

Wow, it's sure looking like Chicago is going to be quite a bit more expensive! We will not be able to make it in late August or Sept due to school. Any of the summer is gonna be hot, which is why we voted on a 'nicer' summer location. I'd have to select sometime from June through early / mid-August for the Davids and Bonnie to attend (though the others will also voice their preference).

Word. Makes me think of Seattle when the hotel desk guy told me: "Oh, sure.....you can walk to that bar."

All the way up Capitol Hill. It was only 7 numbered blocks. He neglected to mention that there were also named and lettered blocks in between.

Mark had an easier time rolling back down that hill one afternoon than the walk up ... I still giggle every time I remember that story .

I had blisters on my feet so bad after that that I could barely walk on Sunday - spent most of that day in the room. I just couldn't go on. Of course, I felt none of this pain on that night, as I was pretty well lit.

Still totally worth it. I have FB friends now from that Sat. night in Seattle that I still chat with daily.

Somehow the voice of reason came over me as the group contemplated that hill climb and I staggered back to my room. Quite amusing to hear the tales the next morning (especially Jan!)

Mim asked just yesterday where "we" were going to meet "her" friends next year. Now I can tell her. After last year, I'm reluctant to commit either way.

We did have every intention of making it last year, but my father was involved in a horrific accident on 4/15 that left him hospitalized for 68 days. Because my mom never left my dad, we had to care for their home, animals, garden, and 42 acre yard (think mowing and haying). Even though dad was out of the hospital before AMG, he was still in a wheel chair, with use of only 1 arm, and I couldn't ask my mom to care for the other 5 children in addition to my father. Last week, dad had his 14th (and prayerfully last) surgery. He's doing much better. We will see how this year plays out. Here's hoping we get to see you all again.

WARNING: by AMG 2013, Mim will be a teenager (and probably as tall as Jody)!!

I spoke with Dennis - after the first of January, he will be checking hotel rates for a variety of dates to see which ones can be accommodated for the best price/location in Chicago.

Hi Schnauzer:
Not a dumb question at all -
AMG is AIDSmeds Gathering - it is where people from the forums come together in different locales once a year to actually meet in person and spend time together - most of it is unstructured (sightseeing, etc) - there are a couple of planned events that take place over the 4-5 day affair - a memorial service and a meet and greet.

We have held it in Mexico City, London, Boston, San Francisco, Washington DC, Chicago, etc.

We hold a vote every year as to where it is going to be and select dates..

Read some of the past threads - I think there might be one or two titled "What is AMG" - they are located in the Forums Gathering area....

I'm sure others will probably chime in...

All are welcome to attend AMG -

Look forward to seeing you at AMG 2014.

Epic Fail. You don't have to be middle aged, gay or male to attend. Our dearest Jan, Michelle, and a few others are prime examples. As someone who hasn't attended one of these gatherings, you are not versed in the inner workings. Granted, we do tend to over indulge, but that's not the primary purpose.

When I think of AMG, I immediately think of our Gary and his precious, memorable speeches. It is the primary aspect that I find the most valuable. The memorial service is beyond belief. The added benefit is that we have forged friendships that transcend these forums.

I understand that your reply was probably tongue-in-cheek, but it was beyond inaccurate.
