Congrats for achieving that!  Can liposuction help gut fat? I thought that kind of fat was really deep. Do already have information about how that operation is experienced? Curious.

Hey Scots,

I believe lipo can be used for the hump, but I have been told not the gut. The fat in the gut is viscreral, meaning around the internal organs, and I've been told lipo around your internal organs is verboten.

Good luck with the hump though. I know some have said they weren't able to do it becasue the fat in the hump is different in some way, but I have heard of others who had had lipo done rather than surgery.

Hope it works for you.

HUGS,

Mark

Talk to a HIV specialist and a plastic surgeon. You may be saving for something that is not possible. Hope it works out for you.

There is a new med coming out soon. It has been turned in to FDA for approvel and hopefully willget it in a year. It is developed for the very thing you may have lipodystrophy. And It is called Tesamorelin. It had really good reviews in the trials So I hope you and all of us who suffer your symptom will get to use it soon.

God bless and love to us all,
Jerry
1997 is when I found out, being deathly ill. I had to go to the hospital due to extreme headache and fever. I fell coma like,  two months later weighing 95 pounds and in extreme pain and awoke to knowledge of Pancreatis, Cryptococcal Meningitis, Thrush,Severe Diarea,  Wasting, PCP pneumonia. No eating, only through tpn. Very sick, I was lucky I had good insurance with the company I worked for. I was in the hospital for three months that time.

Hey Panda,

Here is some information about Tesamorelin.

http://www.drugs.com/nda/tesamorelin_090603.html

Regarding no change after switching meds, there often is no improvement, although switching meds may curtail or actually stop the progression of lipodtystrophy. Some people have reported improvements in the body shape changes, but they usually take a while to show up, if they do.

The reason for this is the cause of lipodystrophy, both lipoatrophy and lipohypertrophy, is still not understood. It is possible that HIV itself could cause it, as well as many of the meds.

Aside from the disturbing outward physical changes, there are also internal ones, such as hyperlipidemia and insulin resistance, that are very troubling and potentially dangerous to a person's continued good heatlh.

Tesamoreline hasn't been approved for treatment of lipodystrophy in those living with HIV, but it is in the works, I think.

Good luck with the new meds and I hope you see a reduction in your lipodystrophy.

HUGS,

Mark

Not unless something has changed since this was published.

Theratechnologies Files a New Drug Application for Tesamorelin With the US Food and Drug Administration
MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - June 1, 2009) - Theratechnologies (TSX:TH) today announced that it has filed a New Drug Application ("NDA") with the US Food and Drug Administration ("FDA") for tesamorelin, an analogue of the growth hormone releasing factor, proposed for the treatment of excess abdominal fat in HIV patients with lipodystrophy.

"The filing of this NDA brings us ever closer to our main objective which is to bring tesamorelin, a molecule that was discovered and developed internally, to the market," stated Mr. Yves Rosconi, President and Chief Executive Officer of Theratechnologies.

Hey Scotts2008,

What meds are you taking, or have you taken that lipohypertrophy is such an issue?

I know Crixivan was likely the culprit for me, plus 13 years on AZT and Epivir.

I also have liver issues, which undoubtedly were caused by the meds, plus the lifestyle I lived in my youth.

I was just wondering what meds you took to cause your difficulties.

HUGS,

Mark

I beg to differ.  I have lipo, and I'm not on meds and never have been.

Thanks, I forgot to mention that some people develop lipo issues without ever having taken meds. As my doctor told me, nobody seems to have a good answer as to the hows and whys.

I still believe the OP will be disappointed when he tries to get liposuction for his abdominal accumulation, providing that it is indeed lipohypertrophic in nature.

I checked again with both a doctor and two nurses. All said liposuction within the abdominal cavity is not practiced because of the great danger of damage to the internal organs.

HUGS,

Mark

Mark,

I'm totally with you on this one.  I actually kind of doubt that the OP will be able to find anyone to perform the procedure.  Everything I've read confirms what you've said -- it's simply too dangerous to use liposuction in the abdominal cavity.  And God knows there are enough horror stories from otherwise healthy people who've had liposuction in parts of the body where it's supposedly safe.

Wish the OP the best of luck.

John
