What do you mean by cured?

There are two things: immunity and eradication. It is possible for an individual to get self immunity against a virus, so you could consider this person cured, for example I had Hep-B, my system is strong enough to have "cured" it by itself and has provided me with life immunity against Hep-B, but it doesn't mean that the virus has been eradicated. The smallpox virus is the only virus that has been eradicated in 1979 by massive vaccination.

Heavens to Mergatroid, Jan! If that's the case, you better stay out of the Research forum completely. I don't want to have to keep cleaning grey matter off that forum all the time! ;D

Is this statement True or False:

"One should explain why they are asking the questions they post here."

True

FALSE

What smoothstone said, hepatitis C for one
Plus some types of influenza are amenable to treatment with some antibiotics

Strictly speaking hepatitis C treatment aids the immune system to clear the virus and for flu the antibiotics are virostatic rather than properly virucidal so again the immune system is important.

I just heard some claim that viruses have never been cured. I wanted to hear your opinion. so.... HEP C you claim can be cured (totally eradicated).

Nope, there was no trap.

Eradicate=Destroy completely

The hep C virus has not been eradicated

The last recorded case of the smallpox virus was in Africa (I think) in 1977/78, and the World Health Organization decided to declare the disease eradicated in 1980...as far as I know this is the only Virus that has ever been eradicated..but I could be wrong.

In my experience, doctors who know what they're talking about speak of a "sustained response" when discussing an absence of hcv viral load. People have been known to experience viral rebound up to two years after the end of treatment.

I've had a sustained response for a little over four years but I hesitate to use the word "cured".

It really does hinge on what you mean by CURE

In any case, the immune system does most of the work with most infections << and may times does well enough on its own. Is no herpes outbreak for 10 years a CURE? 15? Leukaemia "remission"? etc etc. Very few treatments are directly responsible 100% for CURE of any infection.  Most antibiotics, for example, are bacteriostatic, they just stop the bacteria reproducing and leave the immune system to mop up the carnage. Likewise most antifungals.

More pertinent is whether any treatment for a virus is successful (in some sense) ie restores the person to good health free from the effects of the infection, much more nebulous.....

CURE is a word from before the discovery of the body's immune responses. << or a technique to make a good bacon
