travel abroad, can i ?
« on: December 13, 2007, 07:23:56 pm »
It never dawned on me that I might not be able to travel abroad with Atripla.  Has anyone done this?
I'm going to Italy for Christmas.  Any advice appreciated.

I think that the European Union is pretty cool about it. Just make sure you have a letter from your doctor in case the Italian authorities have any questions.

I got on a website that listed countries with HIV travel bans.  I thought that Italy was one that had no restrictions.  The website is in one of the threads but I don't know how to find it. :-\  I'll look and direct you to it.

www.eatg.org/hivtravel/  That's the website to find out what countries have a ban.  I don't know how to make it a link.  The actual link is in the "undetectable...will still test HIV+?" (or something like that) in this forum.  It's in the second to last response.

Never mind, when I  posted the reply, it made it a link.  I tried it out and it worked.

Thanks for your work MUM,  .......but the link did not work for me.   However.....I've found a couple on my own.
Specifically what I'm trying to find out is, can one expect any hassell with carrying Atripla through the airports.
I guess it would be wise to take in my carry on luggage,,,,,case the checked luggage is lost.  ???

Yes, place it in your carry on.  Atripla was approved for sale in the EU 2 months ago anyway so I'm not sure why you think it would be illegal to travel with it, just keep it in the pharmacy bottle that has your name on the labeling.

Yes Jordan you can travel there easily I was in Italy in 2005 and also in Europe again this past July. I didn't have any problems. Make sure you get a doctors note from your doctor listing the medications you are on just in case. I didn't have to use the note but I had one just in case they asked for it. Have a great trip! :)

The only time I've needed a note from a doctor was if I was on a drug trial, and in that case there is no script label on the pill bottle.  Otherwise I don't think they can legally request one in a country with no HIV ban, though maybe I'm wrong.  If there's not ban then it's just like you have any other nasty medical problem.  However, if you're the paranoid, nervous type I guess a letter would relieve any unnecessary worry.

Most countries are cool, provided you keep your meds in their original packaging and have a letter from your doctor explaining that you carry medications that are essential for treating a serious chronic condition (it doesn’t need to say what that chronic condition is).

Many airlines will also insist on seeing that letter from the doctor before allowing you to take your medicines onboard aircraft in your carry-on baggage.

The Atripla pill is very 'discreet' in that it doesn't have much printed or stamped into it.  If I was concerned, I'd put 'em in a multi-vitamin bottle and not worry about it.  I've seen vitamins about the same size.  I know others will tell you not to do this, but it's what I would do.  Regardless of how you handle it, have a fun trip!

I'd say not to worry about it. I flew to Germany once since diagnosis and I had Atripla with me.  I never had a questions asked of me going or coming and I was there for 10 days. Have fun in Italy.

Hey Jyng,

Where are you from and where are you going in Italy?

I am from Italy and, having called home today I can confirm that in the north it is snowing heavily at the moment, so make sure you pack warm clothes and get set for a white XMas! No chance of that happening here in London unfortunately!   :'(

Also, I can confirm that you won't have any problem entering Italy with your meds!

Enjoy!!
