Gallop Morality Poll
« on: August 16, 2010, 12:33:14 am »
Saw this on "The Colbert Report" as I was catching up on missed episodes tonight.  I guess we really do live in a messed up country when only 49% think homosexuality is morally acceptable, but 62% think the death penalty is.  61% think wearing fur is morally acceptable.

You can see the whole list starting at about minute 5:30.  The part leading up to that is very funny where Stephen talks about Newt Gingrich ditching his wife in the hospital as she's going through cancer and then ditching the new wife for another.

Not just the country but in reality, the world is MESSED up pretty badly. It may seemed like just in the US (not discounting the poll) but that's cos it's more vocal about speaking your mind.  ???

I agree. So the "MORAL majority" will rather "kill" than accept living next to a GLBT neighbor I suppose.  Sad day. :o :-X >:(

Well I don't have a huge problem with fur, since I'm delighted to eat all sorts of meat, and foie gras, too, gasp.

Living in a rich country on a comfortable salary, I know I'm morally compromised in all sorts of ways. In fact I am so fucking compromised, that I see duality in so much of living.  This is why I don't think things have to be "morally acceptable" to be doable, and sometimes pleasurable.  It's probably not "morally acceptable" to spend gross amounts of money and use the carbon footprint necessary to ski all winter long, for example, considering the way such resources could be used in the world.

ETC ETC ETC ETC ETC.

I try to do my bit.

Personally I don't think I would do the repulsive things Newt Gingrich does to his loved ones.  They are morally unacceptable and undoable, too.

I'm in favor of capital punishment for certain crimes in certain countries.  But happy also that other countries think it is morally unacceptable, don't do it, and don't see any need for it.

"America is not a young land: it is old and dirty and evil before the settlers, before the Indians. The evil is there waiting."

William S. Burroughs

See that quote struck me as a sort of antidote for American "moral superiority" and the shining city on the hill, the global torch bearer of freedom and democracy, etc.

I think America creates both in this world - evil and promise.

It is hard for me to get on my moral high horse on things like fur when I wear a leather jacket and shoes.  I rationalize it by thinking the cow is used for food, so we may as well use the hide for other things.  I do have a problem with mink fur, because they skin the minks still alive and we don't eat that meat as far as I know.  I saw a report on 60 Minutes, I believe, a few years ago where dog fur was (and may still be) used in many of our coats.  They had hidden video from Asia of dog's throats being slit and then skinned still alive.  This focused on Burlington Coat Factory and many of the labels actually said dog fur.  I won't eat veal, because I think it is cruel to keep the calves kept in such a small area.  I know this is all pretty hypocritical, since I still eat meat.  So, everyone has their own opinions on what is moral.

I have no problem eating meat, and don't really care if it is from a domesticated steer or a wild oryx, both of which live in my state and both of which I have eaten.

Of course being an old leather queen, I have at least many articles of leather apparel.

So, I guess I'm not that moral a person, at least according to the peta crowd.

HUGS,

Mark
