HIV virus returns after cure hope rose
« on: December 06, 2013, 12:31:50 am »
Boston researchers are reporting the return of the HIV virus in two patients who had become virus-free after undergoing bone marrow transplants, dashing hopes of a possible cure that had generated widespread excitement.

The rebound of the virus shows its persistence, and that it can hide in places in the body where it’s hard to find, said the lead scientist, Dr. Timothy Henrich of Brigham and Women’s Hospital. But he said the team has gleaned significant clues from the cases for designing next-generation treatments to battle the virus, which causes AIDS.

Henrich, who presented the preliminary findings Thursday at an international conference of AIDS researchers in Florida, said doctors pinpointed signs of the virus in both patients, who had beaten back the infections to undetectable levels earlier this year. The patients underwent bone marrow transplants several years ago for cancer, and had since stopped their powerful antiretroviral medications, which are typically given to those infected with the virus to keep it in check.

Not the best news.

Tadley, I need you to provide a link. Thanks.

That's quite disappointing.  Sometimes it would seem that for each step forward we then go two steps back (or maybe it is the other way around).
But if I've learned something from reading these forums: it pays to have patience, even if a cure remains elusive, we are light years ahead of when this epidemic started.
Anyway, hopefully the once-a-month shot will work as intended; there's probably our biggest increase of quality of life in the foreseeable future.

this link got me the story w/o having to subscribe to the BGlobe.

can't say that I'm surprised. These "cures" were very pretty radical stuff (always thought it was more correct to call these procedurues "eradications" not "cures"), what with cancer and radiation and chemo and genetics and transplants. So many factors with no identifiable clue as to which one, or ones together, worked for the Berlin patient.

At least that puts a dent in the argument that Tim Ray Brown was cured mainly because his bone marrow was replaced rather than because the new marrow had CCR5-delta32 deletion.

Well, it's disappointing but it does makes sense.  TRB got the immune-to-HIV marrow, these two men did not.  There's some virus in the brain or wherever and it starts replicating and bam! it comes back.  I wonder if the cord-blood transplants will yield similar results.

There's a lot of other good news out there -- not too upset about this.

Don't know if this is all bad news. Besides the chemo, the only common denominador between Timothy Ray Brown & these Boston Patients was graft-vs-host. Graft-vs-host is not good.

Another point is that I presume these patients are on immunosupresive drugs of sme kind. Would the body be able to control the virus with a more robust immune system? What if a very good Therapeutic Vaccine was given...would that have worked to control the virus? Eliminate it?

At least the chemo got the reservoirs to ALMOST zero...this is something to consider.

If it was indeed the chemo and not graft-vs-host that ALMOST eliminated the reservoirs, then this is good news---in a way. This opens up more usage of chemo in erradication strategies. Time will tell.
