Hi i'm a 42 year old male in the UK, I got the news over the telephone while I was at work after having blood tests for a new insurance policy.
My Stats as from last week 21/01/14
CD4 430
VL 21300
Is this good or bad, doctors tell me its OK
But im not so sure?

Regardless to say my insurance was turned down, well I say that is was worded
"We are not declining your clients insurance policy, but he may wish to cancel"

Your numbers are OK according to current UK treatment guidelines as far as I know. In the US with cd4 <500 they encourage the patient to begin treatment, in the UK/EU the cut-off is <350. Your viral load isn't considered high, which is good as well.
They will probably test you again in 3-4 months to establish how much your numbers are stable.

I got my meds today and will be starting them for the 1st time tomorrow, I got them early for 2 reasons, 1st and main reason my girlfriend who I live with is negative, so to start meds early would reduce the risk of passing infection.
2nd reason, I felt I have been diagnosed with a chronic illness and was doing nothing about it! I could not understand why wait until my immune system was so weak before starting treatment, I new in the US they start you at 500 so why wait??? I still cant understand the wait part, is it because they think it might go away! its inevitable your going to be on meds or eventually get too sick and weak and die in a few years to come.
Still trying to get my head round it all.
